What is everyone's thoughts on Al Franken set to be a United States senator?

Sometimes I get Lewis Black and Al Franken confused.

I just have to remember that Al is Lewis's more gentle retarded younger brother.

It's a sick joke to me, especially considering he once wrote a fictional autobiography describing how bad of a politician he would be.

I say finally. The damn thing has been caught up in the courts for what seems like forever leaving an empty seat in the Senate and Coleman never seemed to give up even after about 3,000 recounts.... it was a mess and I'm glad somebody at least got the position. This took way too fucking long, so long that I really didn't give a shit who won the seat, just as long as this retarded shit was over.

I'm getting ready to vomit. That picture is awful. I met Franken when he was running for senate at a marathon in Duluth. I was coming out of a port-o-jon and he was walking by with his team. He shook my hand and I felt bad(knowing that I had just been in the most unsanitary of places. Personally, I'd rather have him in the senate then Coleman but since I don't leave in MN, my opinion probably doesn't matter.

Meh, from what I've seen Coleman seems like an alright guy, not too far right. Perhaps he should have conceded earlier, but a senate seat means a lot, not just to his career or anything. Plus, it's not like it's the presidency. Nixon and Gore were right to concede in '60 and '00 for the sake of national unity. With a Senate seat, it's ok to wait to make sure the vote count is right (although, nine months is certainly stretching it - missing that much of the congressional session is extreme).

That's kind of the point, and that's also probably a combination of the scariest and best thing about American politics-- that, in theory, anyone can get to office.

True, but Minnesota seems to take it a bit far when experience is at issue. They did elect Jesse Ventura governor after all.

I think Coleman has done the country a disservice by conceding. He should have took it to the federal supreme court and maybe they would have counted those absentee ballots that would have named Coleman the winner. At the very least it would have kept the Dems from being filibuster proof for another few months.

The man won, he should be seated. I don't particularly like him, but that's too fucking bad for me, now isn't it? There have been multiple recounts. It was a close election, and I don't blame Coleman for challenging it, but it's over. It's time to seat Franken.

Funny, it doesn't seem like there are any particularly enthusiastic Democrats on this matter. I personally can't imagine him as being anything more than mediocre.

Look people, go back and watch The Running Man, and tell me that Jessie Ventura in his prime wasn't grown in a vat to play Mike Hagger in a theoretical Final Fight movie. The parallels are staggaring.

1.Both were politicians.
2.Both had mustauches.
3.Both were pro wrestlers.

Exactly. Think how many democrats were shocked when Comedic Actor Ronald Regan was elected Governor of California. That was probably a huge thing back then, and no different that Ventura, Franken, or even Ah-nold today.

You need two out of these three things to be in office in the USA = Money + Charisma + Influence

Actors and Comedians already have two of these, and the third isn't that hard to aquire if you try hard enough. And only one do you need to be born with.

In seriousness though, I agree with Syd. The man clearly won, and he should be seated. Additionally, Franken is not a stupid man, and I think he'll make a decent senator. I doubt he'll be outstanding (most senators aren't) but at least he'll be entertaining. Besides, the last two unlikely political careers we've had, Arnold and Jesse, turned out pretty damn well. I think Franken will too.

There was also this other actor dude I remember. People laughed when he ran. He made it to the White House. He did okay. I think one of our forum members has said person in his sig. I dunno.

Well, how bad can Franken be? I mean, when you think about it, Franken's been in the political arena for years. He's put himself into it more than Ventura or Arnold did, and given that they aren't doing too badly, I don't think anything too bad will happen. Probably just an ordinary, run of the mill senatorial career once the bitching from the right stops.

On the flipside, what would you guys think if Dennis Miller had done the same thing? Miller has political savvy, and he's the polar opposite of Franken, sitting on the right side of the table. Or Norm MacDonald for that matter, Norm has right leaning politics.

Reagan had already served two terms as a governor before he became president. On top of that, he had political experience before that as president of SAG during the Cold War - a time when communist actors/screenwriters were an issue because of the strategy of cultural hegemony thought up by the Italian socialist Antonio Gramsci.

I wouldn't put Reagan in the same category as Franken anyway. Regular actor vs. a comedian that unsuccessfully tried to start a leftist radio station. There's a certain respect difference between the two specialties of comedy and regular acting. However, the bottom line is that I think Reagan was a special case. Most celebrities should stay the hell out of the way of politics. Reagan was simply the exception to the rule.

Plus, as I said, Franken wrote a book in which he described how incompetent a politician he would be if he ever ran. I remember the interview on Conan, where he flat out stated that it would be a fiasco. I find it shocking that after admitting that he was still a serious candidate. It's like a bad joke. I don't take issue with most of the above, BUT, I do think it should be noted that Cahleefohneeyuhs economy has been pretty horrid as of late, even before the economy started bombing they were deep in the hole, now because of their inaction they're getting ready to issue almost $3 Billion in motherfucking IOU's tomorrow as they have an almost $24 Billion Budget Deficit, Though I'm not sure how much is attributed to Arnold rather than the Dems refusal to cross party lines and the repubs impasse over Schwarzenegger’s insistence on spending cuts that would eliminate welfare programs and such, both sides are too scared to lose potential 2010 votes to do anything in an already shitty situation. Doesn't help that there is almost no incentive to start or run a business in California, and plenty of reasons to set up shop elsewhere due to the bloated government and over regulation of EVERYTHING.
