Unless you live in a damn box, you've probably at least heard of God of War for the PS2. I find it incredible. Discuss. Now.

I bought both of the PS2 GoW games recently as I got them cheap, but I've only played the first one and haven't even bothered to finish that (I think I'm pretty close to the end, though).
It's a decent hack-and-slash romp with some epic music and nice environments, but I found Ninja Gaiden's gameplay much more enjoyable.

God of War is very pretty and fairly competant, but I prefer God Hand for my beat em up purposes, for a few reasons.
1.Those button press action time things, not as many, and mainly to add damage.
2.Kratos is a clown. Well, Gene is a clown too but Kratos is the kinda ultramasculine clown that teenagers that think Creed's "I stand alone" is their personal anthem happen to like.
3.Because Gene punches and the most effective dodge at high level play is a bob and weave with a half second of invincibility that leaves you right where you are, and the importance of split second counters and guard breaks, the combat is tenser in comparision to the pokefest of God of War.
4. I like fist fighting
5. I like Capcom.
6. I like Clover Studios
7. God Hand has better music, or more than one piece of super epic symphony music.
8. God Hand versus Devil Hand is one of the best boss fights in videogames.

I miss The Bouncer, if Square built on it more story-wise, instead of making us play through it a hundred times, it would be my favorite modern beat'em up. Gotta love the multiplayer too, despite the expected brokeness.

God Hand got reamed by critics IIRC.
Played a little bit of GOW, loved it.

I got the first GoW off of eBay but it would always freeze when I got to the boss of the first level. I sent it back to the guy and he told me he would send a new one, but when I got it back it was the same disc and it did the same thing. So now I hate GoW.

I have to admit that I'm a bigger fan of God Hand myself. Any game that has mini-games where you spank a woman at ultrasonic speeds or where you fight a guy named Elvis is aces in my book.

I really enjoyed the God of War games. Being a big fan of Greek mythology made the games even better for me. I'm currently playing the PSP version since I found it used for a pretty good price.

God Hand did get reamed by critics. Its why you take reviews with a grain of salt.
Cause its a particular game for particular tastes. I don't mean so bad its good, people use this when what they mean is "I have bad taste justified by hipster douchbaggery leave me alone". It's a game that reveals itself to beat em up aficianados willing to put up with its quirks, making it inaccessable to people looking for mindless entertainment. Its twitch gameplay, so on the other hand its not an intellectuals game. You have to be looking for a challenge, and desire silly violence.
Some foul neckbeard at the Gameshtopo heard me mention it, and called it stupid, then said that he "played it for a bit and theres this attack where you punch someone a lot and knock em off into the sky, and thats just stupid." He then sung the lovely praises of the new Wolverine game, citing "where you stab a guy in the stomach and you jump on him and like rip his head off and its just so brutal". I found the former to be entertaining, a fist of the north star parody that has fun with itself while being an intensely satisfying thing to do. I found the latter to be crass and a pointless indulgence in bloody violence like early nineties comics having just discovered the adult label.
I've gotten off track. what I'm saying is that god hand should not be sold short, if you think you may like it then you should give it a fair shake cause it could be one of your favorite games.
Back to the subject at hand, GoW is definitely worth a play. Not my favorite beat em up, but worth a try. Its sequal has a starting set piece where you fight the Collosus at Rhodes that is a must see.
Since we are talking beat em ups, later I'll post about Yakuza and Yakuza 2, as well as Urban Reign.

I've always wanted to play Yakuza since they started showing teaser clips of it on the old Cinematech.

I've played it. It was decent...the story was kinda meh, but at least the action was good. They also tried to throw a dating aspect into the game that I didn't care for too much.

The action was what appealed to me. The fighting system looked really fun to use.

How was Urban Reign anyways? I remember playing a demo for it and it seemed really fun. I just forgot to buy it.

So Urban Reign was designed by people who had worked on tekken, so it reeks of that. Plot is minimal, and the only kind of mission is beat people up. But, the combats not too shabby, and I like the grappling system, where each attack targets a specific range of body parts (head, body, legs), and varies based on whether the guy is facing you or not, whether your facing them, and if you perform a running start, and has a counter point in the move where if you push the same direction and grapple at the right time in the grapple you reverse the move on your opponent. Its pretty deep for the genre.
Yakuza 1 is better, and probably yakuza 2. I'll make a new thread for those.

Well, it looks like I might be able to get a copy of Urban Reign for fairly cheap on eBay so I guess I'll look into it. It's not like I have enough old games I don't play already...

I have Yakuza and played it a couple times. If I remember right, theres unskippable cutscenes, which are cool sometimes, but I just didn't enjoy it on this game. If I could give it to one of you guys I would, I never play it.

God of War 3 Demo to be Included in GoW Collection
Sony confirmed today on the PlayStation Blog that the popular E3 demo for God of War 3 will be included with the God of War Collection. The game will come with a voucher code to download the demo from the PlayStation Network. This is despite an earlier report that Sony didn't feel the E3 demo is ready for a wide release, and so it wouldn't be included on the Collection.
Including it as a download voucher instead of on the disc probably means Sony plans on rolling the demo out to the PlayStation 3 community at large at some later point, after the Collection purchasers have had their exclusive window with it. |

I loved the Bouncer, one of the first PS2 games I played. All I remember about it though is that one of the characters could punt people in the head Randy Orton style.

only reason i bought God Hand was because of RGS' review of the game. it was more of an endorsement than a review, but he was right, the game was awesome. it was fun, the combat was great and not repetitive. i still havent finished it, but what i played, i enjoyed.
