The problem isn't so much the 3-button controller itself. When it came out, it was technically one better than the NES controller, but not really. The NES had four buttons (B, A, Select, Start) and a D-Pad. The Genesis had four buttons (A, B, C, and Start) and a D-Pad.

The problem is that once Sega introduced the 6-button controller, they should have made it the standard. It should have been packaged with the system, and developers should have been encouraged to use it, and games that required or were enhance by the 6-button controller should have been clearly marked as such. They never did this though, and it severely hurt the system's later years.

I always loved the Genesis gamepad, however I felt that the D-pad was quite cumbersome.

It did not have that tight and responsive feel of the NES or SNES D-pads.

No one can make a D-pad like Nintendo...

I agree. I don't think I could ever execute a Shoryuken with a Genesis pad.

I'm not saying it isn't manageable, it just fucking sucks.

EDIT: spinning piledrivers are annoying to pull off anyway you slice it...

I'm wondering if a spinning piledriver wouldn't be done easiest with a trackball. Just give it a twirl with your fingertips and start piledrivin' fools.

I have fucked my fingers up playing trackball games in the past, haha, I'll get too carried away.

My older brother broke one of his fingers playing Golden Tee 98' somehow at a bar back in the day.

I tend to prefer using analog sticks or arcade ones for fighting games, I find them much easier to work with than d-pads. PS1 and 2 dualshocks were love with that.

It's funny.

When I play a fighting game on a controller (2D fighters only) I switch between the D-pad and the analog on the fly for certain attacks or movements.

good lord. There's a reason every single fighting game in the world still lets you use the d-pad. You sir, are a minority. Though I do switch to analog for super atomic buster's when you gotta do to spins like on alpha.

Yea I could never get into using an analog stick for a fighting game. Even in the arcade I didn't like it. D-Pad all the way.

I must clarify that I prefer arcade stick to d-pad also... but analog is just too tough for me to control.. probably the years of training on d-pads since the SNES release of SFII

Hey, speaking of which, I remember back when Street Fighter II was the biggest thing on the planet, there were "programmable" controllers being sold, where it had certain commands programmed in and you can assign them to special buttons and activate them. Anyone ever see those?

Also from that time, controllers with "touch-sensitive" D-pads. God those were awful.

I have to agree. While Sega makes a pretty decent D-pad, Nintendo does a much better job. They still make good D-pads, even in a world of motion sensors and thumbsticks.

There were a couple of those programmable controllers. Some had cartirdges for characters from Mortal Kombat, the one I had, had a digital display on it to show what the button did and what you entered. It was pretty slick. However if you panic and press the wrong button you might fuck yourself lol.

It's the Handsome Men!

Seriously though, I've grown to love Sony's D-pad the best. I've gotten pretty good at my favorite fighting games with it.

I think what makes a good d-pad is the plus sign or slight variation in Sony's case. Every other D-pad makes me pull my hair. If I wanna move Diagonal I'll hold the 2 directions at once thank you!

That's why I can't stand using the XBOX controller. The D-pad feels way too thick and clumsy.

Ha! I knew somebody would notice. I thought I'd make a new icon. Very Happy

And yeah, I do like the Playstation D-Pad. It's pretty good.

I get to be Handsome Dead! I would really like to learn how to use a joystick properly though. I've been getting better at MvC2 and GG X2 and I'd like to be able to take someone on in the incredibly rare case I ever see another MvC2 at the local Flying J.

ORRRRRR you can find/build a X360 or PS3 arcade stick and play people on the Live or PSN.

That would be nice if I had the option. I'd look into that but it just wouldn't feel the same. It sounds silly but one of my fondest memories as a kid was going to the arcade at the local truck stops and playing against others. It's kind of nice to be able to see your opponent face to face. You feel that excitement and sometimes a few people stop and watch. When you're done you might go grab a bite to eat or get go walking around. It felt more like an event, something you really looked forward to doing. Oh well, it might be fun. I'll have to try it sometime.

The d-pad on the Dualshock controllers always made my thumb hurt after a while. I hate how the middle of it goes into the controller, and the four directions aren't connected together like Nintendo's (and pretty much everyone else's, for that matter) d-pads.

I did a (sadly deleted) gigantic rant on the split d-pad design for THI, after I developed a severe thumb blister from a marathon session of Street Fighter Alpha 2. In short: fuck that shit, make it like a Super Nintendo pad.

However, the 360's has to be the worst. It's basically an analog stick with a cross slapped on top.
