I know the answer to this, but I want to see if I can stump you with this one Knyte...

How can you set up the Source Developer Kit for Left 4 Dead?

As of the 15th of May, a beta of the Left 4 Dead Authoring Tools has been released. It is available as a free download and can be found under the "Tools" tab in Steam.

Is that what you are looking for?

I wasn't looking for this answer.... the Authoring Tools doesn't really apply to some aspects of the maps I've been looking at. I was hoping you'd find the long ass coding ploy to make a mod for CSS using the L4D .fgd file. However, since it's been rumored that L4D2 will have the SDK I can withdraw this question.

Was it a good choice to purchase Rock Revolution for the PS3 for twenty bucks which included the Drumset and the game?
Also can I use it with World Tour?

Okay, another one.

I downloaded a particular rom to play on Fusion for Genesis. The game in question is a European one and seemed to be running slowly. I heard PAL games run at 50 FPS, and it was running at that, but I always assumed that the game was sped up a bit to compensate for this. But this was running at what seemed to be 5/6 speed. So I set the country in Fusion's menu to USA, and bam, it's running at normal speed.

So my question is, are PAL games supposed to be sped up to accommodate the lower framerate and this was a screw up, or are all European games just played really slow?

I have a rather random one I got to thinking about while watching Usa's Peter Pan videos...

Knyte, what's the worst game you have ever played, and what makes said game the worst?

It all has to do with the coding. Difference between PAL and NTSC on something like the SNES/Super FAM and Megadrive/Genesis, would be a decrease in speed in games, as well as the black borders in PAL games since PAL uses a higher resolution than NTSC.

While emulating, I don't always notice the black borders, cause I never usually compare PAL vs. NTSC between consoles, but I do notice how slow or fast a game can be if not coded properly for whatever region.

Take Shadow of the Beast on the Megadrive/Genesis. The NTSC version runs faster than the PAL version due to improper coding, making the game very difficult to play.

Another example is Sonic the Hedgehog on the Megadrive/Genesis, and the PAL version is slower than the NTSC version because of, you-know-what, bad coding.

Here's the difference between NTSC and PAL of Sonic on Megadrive:

If the game is ported right, then there is no difference in speed between PAL & NTSC games. However, if the publisher is lazy, then they simply slow down the NTSC version to 50hz and release it.

Well, depends on what you mean by "the worst"?

The worst made game I've ever played is E.T. on the Atari 2600.
The worst coded game I've ever played is Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing on PC.
The worst taste game I ever played was a Hentai game called Discipline: Record of a Crusade, it was very disturbing and I couldn't stomach it for very long.
The worst game in terms of disapointment was Neverwinter Nights 2, which I love and adore the first one, and had such high hope for 2, but when it finally came out, it was complete and udder shit. Nothing like the first one. I still weep over it to this day.

Does that help?

It does. Very Happy It was mostly a curiosity question, and that answered it.

I've never played either NWN, although I've heard good things. What made the second so inferior?

As I've said before, I preferred NWN2 to the first. The tutorial for the first dissuaded me from playing, but I found nwn2 much more fun and have bought all expansions. IIRC, Knyte's biggest issue was the bugs, which were fixed by the time I started playing.

I doesn't play like the first, they ruined the multiplayer aspect of it, which is the greatest feature of the first. I've said before and still believe, that it feels more like Baldur's Gate I & II than Neverwinter Nights.

I prefer Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 over NWN for sure, even though I played NWN for more hours I'm sure.

Baldurs Gate had beautiful hand drawn backgrounds, an extremely well thought out story, and ton's of interesting characters to kill, or recruit to your party. NWN cannot really be compared, as it is a completely different kind of game. I just found the visuals in NWN to be extremely sub-par for a game that came out when it did, but what makes this acceptable is the fact that it presented the D&D rules in a better fashion than any game before it.

I dunno, Eye of Beholder is a close second. Razz

Knyte, as it is pretty obvious you prefer PC games, I was wondering if you were a fan of Privateer. They did a remake of it a while back and it used the Vega Strike engine.

Anyways, my question is what do you think of remaking games like that? Is it a good thing? Bad thing? What are some remakes you enjoyed? Remakes that you absolutely hated? I hated when they remade Sierra adventure games, even though a lot of those remakes were unauthorized. Thanks for your time.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I have become more and more curious about something. I import a lot of games and one thing is usually true with them. There is always at least a few English word in the import game, even the ones that have no chance of coming to the west. Whether it is "player 1", "congratulations", "continue", "clear", they all have at least one English word in them. Some have even more than others. Why is that? Going back to the NES the Japanese versions of the games Ghosts and Goblins and the Castlevania 1 and 2 have endings that are completely in English, and the Castlevania 1 and 2 released here have different text as well so it doesn't seem to be for ease of import. Those weren't fan translations either. This has always confused me.

Back in the 8-bit days, it was eaiser to make latin based characters than Kanji, so in many cases, when you need to display text in your game, English was easier to font and read than Japanese, so there you go. Why they still do it? I have no idea.

As long as they don't change what made the game great, then I am all for remakes. I loved the DS remakes of FF III & IV. I loved the PSX remakes of FF I & II. If you are remaking the game to enhance the graphics and sound without altering the gameplay (Such as the HD version of SF II for Xbox Live) then go for it. If you are remaking the game, because you think you can make it better, control or content wise, then fuck off and die. (I'm looking at you "Robin Hood: Defender Of The Crown" for PS2!)

Second question, are you an Intellivision fan or is that avatar just used because it looks cool?

Intellivision was the first console I ever owned, and in fact, still have one. I think I have just about every game made for it as well. Mission X, AD&D Treasure of Tarmin, and Auto Racing are three of my all time favorite games.

Well sadly, like many child actors of the 80s, things didn't go so great them.

Howard is living the quiet life in North Albertson, PA with his wife and three children, where he works as a real estate agent. Nester is another story.

Who didn't love Nester from the Nintendo Power series of comics? Playing the curiously-coifed, he delighted us and won our sympathys. But living in La-La land has its disadvantages, especially when you're most famous for being named after a game console. Comic roles dried up for Nester after leaving Nintendo Power. By the '90s, poor Nester made his keep as a hunting guide and bartender, leading a boozy, wild life. He met his end like a country music song. The still-young 32-year-old was shot to death over a botched-up debt.

...funny, Knyte.

Howard (Phillips, not Lincoln) left Nintendo and took his character in the strip with him. The strip was phased out eventually because...well, who knows? Strip was really kind of dumb after Phillips left.

Howard today is a consultant for the video game industry. Drop him a line if you dare: howard@hpc123.com

(Actually, Syd, if you can somehow get him on the other end of an interview, that'd be a bitchin' article)
