In two days, it will have been a year since this legend of comedy passed away. I've always had a love/hate relationship with this comedian. Love him because he's fucking funny, and his ability to recognize the truth/foreword thinking side of a debate, and I hated him because I slowly began to recognize him as a misanthropic old fool. I actually believe some of his lines were constructed purposely to plant seeds in the minds of the more sociopathic, armageddon loving cretins so he could end the world in his lifetime (all you have to do to take down this country is fina a way to get rid of electricity). There were in fact times, particularly when I was in a bad mood when I would think to myself "Oh George just die already."

and then, it actually happened.

Of course when it actually did happen, I was initially silenced and shocked. My reasoning for that now was that I was dissapointed Carlin was killed by heart failure as opposed to a bullet in the head from somebody who was sick of his whining. I didn't want to speak out at first, mainly because the part of me that loved him was sad, plus I felt it was essential to re-evaluate my feelings of hate. I also felt that this couldn't be something I could think over in a week, so I decided to wait a year to the day, (edit: two days before, close enough).

My ultimate conclusion? I do feel bad for his loved ones, but I won't be missing him.

If you really wished death on a guy because you disagreed with his opinion, it's probably time to reassess. That's bad.

I don't wish death on somebody simply because I disagree with them. It's more of a case by case basis. I don't think the conservatives on this board should die for believing what they believe. They can expect me to challenge it, (as I can expect them to do the same to me) but death? Lemmy Kilmister thought Evanescence was the next great rock band (not a verbatim quote but something to that effect) and thinks hip-hop was the "worst music black people have ever come up with" (a verbatim quote). I think he's wrong on both counts, but do I wish death upon him? No.

It doesn't sound to me like he was 'wishing death' on anyone, merely that (right or wrong) he has reached the conclusion that the world is a better place without Carlin. Which is not the same thing.

when I was in a bad mood when I would think to myself "Oh George just die already." <~ what's this?

I was dissapointed Carlin was killed by heart failure as opposed to a bullet in the head from somebody who was sick of his whining. <~ this sounds healthy...

Not trying to start shit, just saying there's more important stuff to worry about and better ways to channel your energy than focusing it like that.

I did want to just let this stupid thread die, but since people are replying...

First off, it was a year ago. A little late to the party?

Second, did you ever consider that this guy was in the entertainment business? The business of making people laugh, making people angry, making people think? This was his job, and it wouldn't shock me if he said some things just to get other people's goat. Never take anyone who has a national mouthpiece seriously, particularly if they make money when people get pissed at them.

Third...anyone who wants someone else dead simply because they don't agree with their opinions is someone I don't want living in the United States. I hear places like Iran have a great policy of shooting people who don't share a majority view. Considered it?

1) I said I wanted a year to collect my thoughts and soak in the situation rather than just jump out and say "I'm glad he's dead." Learn to read.

2) You talk as if Carlin was a completely different person offstage. He wasn't. I've seen interviews and debates with him, and he's exactly the same person onstage that he is off. The power just isn't turned up to the max. You can't help but wonder if he even prepares any jokes before going on stage sometimes, as opposed to just rambling on about how much he hates humanity.

3) I've already addressed this.

I always thought George Carlin looked like the Jordans Furniture guy. I always liked Carlin to. He had to have been doing something right all those 40 years he was famous though. RIP Georgie Boy

People like that are -never- "off stage". Any time there's eyes on them, they have to act their persona, or the illusion is lost. But even assuming he really was...who gives a fuck?

Yeah. Not everyone who disagrees with you. Just some of them. That's loads better.

Really, I just hope you're trolling. Because I'm not sure what to think otherwise.

Posting in the greatest thread of the season! Aw man.

And in case it wasn't obvious, by greatest I meant worst. Sarcasm is hard to relay over the net and I refuse to use that stupid joke emoticon.

I am gonna have to agree with your comment about refusing to use the joke emoticon, if you don't feel confident enough in your words without having to put a fucking overt disclaimer after it, than it simply isn't worth saying. It's almost as if your insulting the community's intelligence, as if they could not sense the joking implication and need to be babied through it. But then again, we now have the " Duh. " emoticon to counter that effect...

On the matter at hand, I have always been a Carlin fan and feel that world is not a better place in lieu of his presence.

I'm not trolling, think what you want to think.

And SoldierHawk got it right the first time. I merely think the world is a better place without Carlin.

On the subject of people in Iran shooting people who don't agree with the majority, I honestly don't feel like it's that different in this country. If you don't agree with the majority view in this country people will clamor for your head on a block. They might not shoot you right away, but they'll still want your head.

People say they want Ann Coulter and Michael Moore dead, but what's the worst thing that's ever happened to them, getting food thrown at them by one or two uppity college students? Because at the end of the day in a free and democratic country, you might not like what someone has to say, but you know they have a right to say it.

I'm not denying anybody's right to say anything, but when they do say what they say, they should be aware of the consequences of what might happen when they say it. And that there is a chance that "rights" will not protect you.

One of Carlin's last bits was "There's no such thing as rights." That we made them up. His evidence is what happened to japanese American citizens in 1942. Just when these people needed their rights the most, their government took them away, and that they can't be rights if someone can just take them away. And that our rights have really just been temporary priviliges.

Edit: And now that I think about it, another thing he said was, "I believe we have unlimited rights. For instance, I think I have the right to do whatever I please, but if I do something you don't like, I think you have the right to kill me."

You think he's fueling sociopaths to end the world? Sociopaths want things for themselves, destroying the world would destroy them and they tend to not do that.

The world is better off without Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot etc., Carlin was a great comedian but comedian's don't make a big enough impact for the world to be better or worse with or without them.

It would have been better if this was a troll thread.

I had a long and well reasoned response but I realized that-

A: A well reasoned response here would be a titanic waste and
B: I'm to hot and tired to continue.

Suffice to say you should consider letting this embarrasment of a thread die.

I want to hear it. Humor me. Besides, the thread was dying before you went "I have a response!"

I never liked him that much simply because when he went on about history he was inaccurate and said things that I would consider treasonous.

I mean I prefer more well read comedians. I mean there's joking and then making jokes about history and when your assumptions about history are untrue (I study history so it strikes me hard) the joke looses it's appeal.

I always liked Lewis Black better.
