Also, the thing about our students lagging "waaay the fuck behind" other countries is something of a myth. Yeah its true, sort of, but those stats are also quite skewed in the way they're calculated and tallied. I don't have a Prove-It(tm) link right this second, but will endeavor to find one.
Longer school years is not what we need, and franky we ain't gonna get 'em. California just cut four days off of the school year to save money. Granted we're the most bloated state budget-wise, but I think that's an option a lot of other states will be looking at too. A fair chunk of change for pretty small cost.

CA needs to just enact a "do-overs" bill or something. We're so far in the hole and it's going to take ages to dig out, if ever. As soon as I can get back to HI, I'm gone. I'd rather take my chances with NK's missiles than the CA legislature.

I actually feel that the school system should be shortened by a few grades, but that's just me.

Do you also think that every health center (or nurse's office) in every K-12 school should have a tray of free condoms since that will prepare them for college? You shouldn't treat a fucking 5 year old like they're going to college the next day: college students are adults and K-12 students are children. They should be treated differently and have different rules. |
Obviously I don't advocate giving little kids condoms. But let's be honest here. Did you ever have to wear a school uniform, Jeebus? No, you didn't. Would you have been super pissed off if while you were in school, someone suddenly decided you needed to wear a uniform? Yes, you would have. Let's add this up:
NEVER WORE A UNIFORM + NEVER EVER WOULD HAVE A TOLERATED A UNIFORM = NO RIGHT TO ADVOCATE UNIFORMS

+1. We're not trying to create minions, and frankly kids who are going to be assholes are gonna be, uniform or no. Unnecessary cost for little to no payoff.
That said, schools SHOULD start enforcing their damn dress code. That's a different issue imho though.

Also, a uniform doesn't curb bullying or level the playing the field. Let's say that you decide all boys need to wear a white button-down shirt, dark brown khakis, and a black tie. Obviously that's a dumb uniform, but let's just go with it. The uncool kids are going to get the uniform for about $45 at K-Mart. The cool kids are going to $200 Armani shirts, and equally pricy pants and silk ties.
And yes, dress codes need to be enforced. I support reasonable dress codes 100%. Like, if you want to work the street corner after school, the school can't really stop you. But that doesn't mean you get to wear your work clothes to school.

Well, technically they could stop it because its illegal, doubly so when the kid is underage. But I totally understand and agree with your point.

I can't get behind this one. That's like me going "you never had cancer, you have no right to advocate chemotherapy" or something.
Schools can't properly enforce a dress code because some kid's dumbass Juggalo parents will go sue the school over their kid's right to come to school wearing whatever, because it's infringing on his rights or whatever, and then the legal precedent is set (I'm sure it already has been), so let one bad apple spoil the bunch and punish everyone equally.
It'd create jobs in the uniform-making industry, too.

Actually, it's more like "You've never had cancer and you've always said that if you ever got cancer, you would seek herbal Japanese remedies as your primary course of treatment. You have no right to criticize your cousin for refusing chemo."
And there will be no jobs created in the uniform industry, because 9 times out of 10, they don't send the kids down to the uniform store to get a uniform. Instead, they say, "Our official uniform is comprised of the following clothing items. Assemble them yourselves."

Sure it would. If you increased the demand 100x over or whatever? Those little sweatshop workers only have so many hands and hours in the day.

It's not offensive, some people just talk like since they live in the states, then they know it's different, even if they don't know what other countries are like. Neither I nor Captain are offended.
You also never answered Captain Pollutions question about what makes the US special. There isn't a huge difference between the US and Canada besides population so saying the US's problem is multiple cultures is a little bit redundant.
You also talk about how new the US is, as far as I can remember the US has been an independant country longer than Canada. |
I just think that US has its own different problems for its own different reasons, i'm glad you weren't offended not that I really thought you were but I dunno I just have my own views that not a lot of people are necessarily going to agree with. I understand your points to though and respect your opinion, after all we're all entitled to one.
