"Microsoft's CEO let it slip during a closed door meeting earlier tonight that there will be a 3rd XBOX console released next year. It will be a motion control based system that will compete directly with Nintendo's Wii."
Too soon, MS. Hopefully this is just 360 + Natal, or they have to be shitting me. I was actually dead set on finally joining the 7th console generation by buying a 360 this summer, now what do I do?

Nice. I've been saying for awhile now that MS and Nintendo need new consoles out by Summer 2010 at the very latest. Let's hope that Nintendo follows suit.
We obviously need more details, but X3 should be awesome.

Wii-2 needs to have HDx2: high def and hard drive. And an online system that's not completely fucking regressive. It'll be fun watching Nintendo showcase these features like they're groundbreaking.

But yea, Nintendo talks about bringing people together, but the way they run the current generation online cannot stray further from that goal. Friend codes are cumbersome, we need improved voice communication etc...
On that note, I am very excited and optimistic towards the future of Nintendo and am already quite stoked for this next console.

Even considering that I enjoyed my 360 and first Xbox, I probably wouldn't buy this. As Yahtzee said recently, I use videogames to relax after a long day. I don't come home to flail my arms around like a douche.

That's just the narrow window your looking at it through. It creates full immersion, besides for most of the stuff, controls can be handled with the simple flick of the wrist, the technology is very intuitive.

If it's actually going to be a Wii knock-off, then it will be freakin' weak. I'll probably get a PS4 instead, provided that they stay a normal system and aren't completely outrageous with the pricing and learn from that mistake. If I want a Wii, I'll get a damn Wii, not some asshole's knockoff that was made to cash-in on the current-trend.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the PS4 is still at least 3 years off.

I agree with bjork. The PS3 is powerful enough that it can delay an 8th generation release while MS and Nintendo cannot. In fact, when Nintendo and MS *do* release new systems, PS3 will be poised to dominate the market. They will have a system with:
A) An established library with Platinum Hits titles starting at in $20-30 range.
B) The cheapest system on the market
C) A piece of hardware that doubles as both a reasonably priced console and a reasonably priced Blu-Ray player.
PS4 at the earliest will be 2012, and conceivably could not hit shelves until 2015.

I'd rather they held off the PS4 for a while anyway, so that costs would become less expensive overtime for Blu-Ray(Which was mostly what made the PS3 expensive in the first place.)

From what I have read, the current Wii can output in HD, but it does not have hardware drivers set to do so since it would demand too much from the processor and games would lag. Personally I wish that they would open it up and just let developers know about the restrictions so that some content could be HD.
For example, the main menu, the internet program, any video playback and all in game HUDs.
I also agree that a hard drive needs to be added. Why not add one as a USB device with a pass through adapter built in?

Nintendo has categorically opposed a USB hard drive since Day 2 (because no one complained on Day 1) for reasons unknown. At this point, a hard drive is a moot point for the Wii. There have been so many missed opportunities for DLC, it's better to just say "fuck it" and build a new system that devs know will have one from the onset.
Also, the Wii doesn't run an OS, so patching is impossible on the current system.

Next Nintendo console needs to really nail the online aspect. GC's online was laughable even if PSO is one of my personal favorites, and Wii has been a big leap for Nintendo's online presence, but shit like friend codes need to go. If MS and Sony can have generally open online access and they haven't been sued or linked to negative press because of weirdos online, Nintendo would be ok too imo.

If Nintendo can provide good, free online play, then can 1-UP Microsoft big time. XBL is where Microsoft makes the majority of their monies off the XBox brand, and if Sony and Nintendo force them to stop charging for full online play, it could very well force them out of the console industry.

Of course it runs an OS.
When you turn it on and see the menu that is the visual side of the OS. When you put a disk in and it recognizes it, that is OS working. When you get a Wii update, that is the OS being updated.
It is absolutely possible to patch the Wii and it has been done several times already in its existence.

But yea, patching is definitely possible but I agree with Syd. They are just going to say fuck it and wait for the next console, that's what they always do.
Look at N64. they chose not to go with the CD-ROM format and as a result they saw their true limitations towards the end of its life. They briefly and half-assedly released the 64-DD(disc-drive), in Japan only for that matter, only to say to fuck it, we will wait for the next generation to embrace the true expanded disc format.

The difference is that they could turn this on as a menu option without impacting their users at all. In fact, many people think that they designed the system specifically because it could be upgraded if needed.

It's not so much an OS as it is a menu system, like DOS Shell. And the menu system can be patched, but from what I've read, games cannot, unless the game itself is specifically designed to check for patches. Rock Band 2 is a great example. Because there's not a real OS, RB2 can't read protocols off it. Thus, the game cannot read SD cards over 2 GB. And because there's no OS that checks for patches on loading and because RB2 isn't programmed to check on it's own, the game can't be patched to fix this.
The 360 runs a full OS, and you can pause a game and call up its menu during gameplay. You cannot check your Wii mail during a game. There is no integration. Once you RUN MAIL, you can't RUN WEATHER without first doing QUIT MAIL.
