Steam has been doing a hardware survey every month of all of the users (who opt in) and using those stats to determine what game they should support.

This is fucking brilliant and the stats are amazingly cool if you are into this sort of thing.

That is very cool... and as someone who plays CS:S, I found myself seeing where I fell in the survey. On most categories, I'm in the majority.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

I think it is a really good way to determine if your computer hardware is reasonable or if you really should upgrade.

So on my desktop I'm in the complete majority (Nvidia, Intel, DX9), but on my laptop I'm in the complete minority(ATI, AMD, DX10). Interesting.

A capital idea.

One of my biggest problems with computer games is the compatability/required hardware battle, where you race the red queen just to get a laggy turned down version of your game. That and comp designers making their games require pilfered alien tech.

Knowing what your customers have and designing in that area, it makes sense. Then the remaining laggarts can see where they fail
