I don't quite get what you mean by that as far as supporting your statement that you still love the show. I take it to mean that yeah, it's been on since '89, it had its run, and now it sucks.

You must have never been a Monty Python fan, were you? I don't think half of their sketches (and movies for that matter) had endings.

All things considered, many other shows got bad much sooner than the Simpsons. It's a testament to how steep the curve of goodness lasted for them.

The simpsons has been on for quite a while, so one could very well expect to see it run our of steam. Its still funnier and better written than any number of sitcoms. Its funnier and better written than family guy. Its still pretty funny and well written.

Its main problem for me is that now it pales a bit to shows like the venture brothers, the boondocks, ATHF, and occasionally southpark. All of these shows can simply outmatch the simpsons on one level or another. All of them can be genuinely funnier more often than not. But saying simpsons suck is a bit overboard.

It's also possible that The Simpsons are the same as they always were, but that we have outgrown them? Most of us are in our 20s. So, in our childhood and teens, the comedy portrayed in The Simpsons was perhaps more appealing?
(deep thought)

The Simpsons are clearly not the same. Take for example the episode where Homer questions if he loves Marge anymore and she goes to Moe's Tavern to get an answer from him. There's a nice POV shot of Homer looking up from her feet (taking a drink) and looking in her eyes. Homer breaks down and says who is he kidding and sweeps her off her feet. The Simpsons don't have endings like that anymore nor have they for the past six seasons (estimate). They also used to have some sort of moral... well, not so much a moral as a point. And, no, they did not stop having "points" or "morals" when Lisa ended an episode saying "maybe there is no moral". But, that's an obvious example of how the Simpsons have changed. There also wasn't self referencing mockery of themselves as there is in later seasons. Homer actually worked. Bart had a heart. Phil Hartman was alive.

I'm not saying the Simpsons needs to be dramatic, but it was at its best when it was surprisingly touching. They just haven't had those moments in these recent seasons. Even when they try, it's just half assed. Now it's "where can we put that Leprechaun?"

I watch every episode with the lowest of low expectations now. They don't need to do much to exceed those expectations. Sometimes I'm impressed, but usually I'm just disappointed.

Yet I keep watching... week after week... season after season... Confused

I thought up a FUN Simpsons game: Find the problem in the picture. The rules are simple:
1. Only 1 entry per person per day
2. Enjoy

I'm responding to a bunch of people, so I'm not bothing to quote anything.
1. Yes, the show is significantly worse than it used to be, it's not a matter of our age. Want to know how you can tell? Go rent the older seaons, like 4-8. Every episode is a classic. They're all WAY better than the current episodes.
2. The Simpsons is NOT better than Family Guy. Maybe at its peak it was, but it's not even close anymore.
3. The Simpsons does not PALE compared to Boondocks. I liked the show, but some of the episodes were really bad, and they only had one season. Well, very few episodes were flat out bad, but most of them ended on a serious down note which is not a good way to go.
4. South Park is in its 10th season and has gotten better EVERY season, showing that it's possible and that the Simpsons just couldn't do it. Seriously, was this not the strongest season of SP ever?
5. Tish, you wrote sydlexia a bunch of places, Tishy instead of Lefty on Ned's shirt, and cum on one of the signs.

#edit: and put a Q instead of O in leftorium and wrote all your base are belong to us. Hey, I was doing it without looking at the pic.

I'll respond in order.

1.True, no need to elaborate. Though we should always consider first the potential for bias unrelated to the show.
2.Family guy is a steaming pile of crap that got worse after about episode 3. From there it's gone up and down, ranging in quality to sparsly dotted with jokes that can ring a weak laugh of weekday comic stip quality, all the way down to entire episodes of utterly forgettable tripe without so much as a smiles worth of good jokes. The edgy humor is weak, and the wit is tired pop-culture references and the same exhausted dialogue. The art's shit, and the character development is the worst ever. And this is in comparision to the simpsons, whose characters have morphed into entirely different entities over the years.
3. Boondocks sometimes ends on a down note, but is always funny. The satire is subtle, the show is loud, the art is stylish, and the jokes are top notch. More character development occured in one season of boondocks than all of family guy, and the show itself is awfully quotable.
4. South park is good, even now it can manage to be offensive, and it turned its short development time into the ability to be immediately relevant.
5. You spoiled the game for everyone, not that it looked particularly fun.

Not to start a Family Guy war, but I can't understand why people hate-hate-hate the show. Not just regular viewers, but from people in the animation world. I think it's a hit or miss show, but I definitely don't hate it like some people (I don't mean you, RobotGumshoe). Maybe I just can't hate anything that was once pitched to "The Weird Al Show". I respect the Family Guy writers. Manatees are very ethical creatures.

Speaking of Family Guy, remember that time Muhammad gave me that salmon helmet?

Seriously though, I like Family Guy for the most part. There's a few episodes here and there that I didn't particularly like, but for the most part it's a good show I think.

I still like the Simpsons, even though they were better before.

But I don't know which season is aired currently. The most recent one in Quebec is the season with Maggie being a genius (IQ of 167).

Also, I think the voice acting is better in Quebec. It seems more expressive.
And I don't think it's better simply because it's in french.
Just look at the ones in France. They really suck.

Here's a video so you can get a good opinion (it's fucking hard to get a good video of the quebec version, and this is one of the longest).

I'm offended by obsessive family guy worship (you won't believe how many times i've been chided as having no taste by people who love this dreck). I hate american idol more, but never has my very taste been called into question for disliking it. I don't like it, I won't rant about it, just leave me alone about it. But the family guy begs people to harrass you for what your missing. Its like having a door attached to your forehead in a neiborhood of stereotypical jehovah's witnesses.

Char, can we at least watch the episode of the Tick with the Human Ton and Handy first? "There, the shows over. READ A BOOK!"
