Played this for the 1st time last night. It's a lot of fun. If you like shooting every fucking thing in sight, which is awesome. I couldn't help but to feel like I might have a seizure playing this game though.

People complain about game companies making the same game over and over, and treasure is the proof that its not necessarily a bad thing.
Treasure has a 1,000 views of Mt Fuji approach, where the same basic elements are present (vulcan, homing, and laser for guns;giant epic boss battles being the crux of the game battles; light anime window dressing) but the variations are rich and sweet, where each game brings a new set of nuanced yet familiar game mechanics.
Gunstar heroes is absolutely classic, and the battle with seven force is the best boss battle on the Genesis, and one of the best out there. I've got nothing but love for it, and thats all I have to say about that.
You need to try their other works. The best top down shmup I've ever played was one of theirs, where you had three different types of guns that would produce different weapons in conjunction(pushing the button for the vulcan and these sort of blue bombs would produce a search laser, which would scan in sweeping lines and fire a electric stream when it sensed something, useful for passing through barriers), each one useful in its own right without need to be earned or limitations. The weapon upgrade system was determined by score, which was increased by defeating certain types of enemies, so its got an intellectual element where you have to plan out what color of enemies your going to hit and which ones you arent. Its very good and deserve a download.
Alien soldier is a genesis, and bloody hard. Ikaruga I think was their and is one of those classics that everbody cant get enough of.
And Astroboy Omega Factor for the GBA. For like three years before that I had become particularly jaded about games in general and was thinking of just dumping them. I bought it on the cheap, and played it cause my job was boring. It felt good, it felt fresh. It had a nostalgia element of classic difficulty and uncluttered mechanics, but with a fresh faced save system and an insistence that difficulty be fair instead of cheap. I liked the story, idealistic without being stupid, and troubled without being angsty. When I beat the boss fight, I felt achievement for the first time in a videogame in a long time, and the final sequence was rewarding in a way that most arent because you get to play it and it feels honest to goodness heroic. Astroboy restored my love of videogames.
Nice to write a block of text thats not a gripe once in a while.

I've never played Gunstar Heroes but the name reminds me of Sunset Riders for the SNES, which leads me to my question.
In the very first level there's this box that is blocking my way, I've tried shooting it and jumping it and none of the other buttons seem to do anything. I've got my controller mapped out just like the SNES controller so what the hell am I missing? I'm literally stuck 1% into the game.

Treasure games in general are fun, but this is one of my all time favorite games. Mixing chaser with lightining was my favorite combination when I first started however it feels so much more rewarding when you actually start defeating bosses with the more unique weapon combinations.
EDIT: Another good Treasure game is Advanced Guardian Heroes for the GBA. It can get kind of difficult but it's still fun to play, it's more of a beat-em-up though.

Did you jump up to the higher level so you can go around? I watched a YT video of SNES level 1, and the only box I see blocking a path can be passed that way.

Treasure to me sounds like a company that's both underrated and overrated, sure they don't get mainstream attention, but nowadays I meet at least ten people in every forum I visit who treat them like they're Jesus' newborn son.
In my opinion about Gunstar Heroes, it's good, but it always makes me think of it as Contra: Hard Corps Lite. Everything that made GH good, was made better in Hard Corps(Graphics, music, bosses, etc. Hell, it even has a parody of Seven Force). Sure, Hard Corps is as hard as Tom Cruise's snake in a gay bar, but once you start getting good at it and kick ass it becomes a phenomenal experience.

Contra: Hard Corps has always been my least favorite Contra. Everything about just felt wrong for me.

CHC is cool because the guy says "rats!" like Charlie Brown. But that whole thing of marrying a gorilla or whatever, I dunno...
Anyway, I wouldn't go to great lengths to hype Treasure as some of their stuff hasn't clicked with me (Silhouette Mirage, Mischief Makers, etc), but I do like me some GSH.

Hmm, Treasure... as far as I can remember, a pretty damn hard and entertaining platformer from the company for the Genesis kept me hooked when I was younger, maybe because it looked campy and kick-ass at the same time... Two words: Dynamite Headdy.
And yeah, Gunstar Heroes has to be one of the best platformers EVER. Laser + Homing FTW.
