A few important points about pills:
1) In order to be effective, they must be ingested with some sort of actual food.
2) They are not as effective as getting nutrients from food due to their high potency and the rate at which they absorb into your system.
3) They do not contain any significant amount of calories, and calories are also necessary to survive. |
I believe all people should be eating meat and that vegetarianism is ridiculous at this point in time. However, science has this way of moving forwards and when pills/synthetic food is possible would you avoid it out of spite?
I have no doubt that several generations of humans would, but eventually if the synthetic source of nutrition became better sustaining and had less impact on our fellow earth creatures, why fight against it? Just so you can have a tasty burger?
I personally don't think that this will happen in our lives. I am guessing that this debate will be real in 200-300 years, but just like 100 years ago a microprocessor didn't exist and couldn't have even been dreamed of, a food pill seems much more simple. |
You are trying to justify to yourself why you eat meat. You do not need meat to survive, or to even live the full extent of your life. Some argue that a vegetarian lifestyle will in fact lead to longer life because it reduces likeliness of getting colon cancer or stomach cancer. You can easily find alternatives to substitute the protein iron or whatever you get from eating meat. Be honest with yourself. You eat meat because it is good and or you are too lazy to plan your diet because eating meat and vegetables is an EASY way to get all your necessary vitamins and minerals. I know that's why I eat meat. |
Bullshit. I could not have been more clear about my reasoning and I obviously don't believe you are correct. I believe that the nutrition a human being needs currently requires the consumption of other living beings. This includes animals and plants. I'm not against eating meat because we need to eat it in order to survive. Period. If that condition were removed, I would kill things out of spite or to get a juicy burger.
We aren't there yet scientifically.
As a second point, Syd is absolutely correct. It would have to be affordable in order to make the switch. If it costs less to eat meat, that definitely makes it easier to survive on.
I'm not advocating that anyone make a shift to becoming a strict herbivore, just that as each meal is considered, the life or death of other beings does matter and we shouldn't be selfish or spiteful when we don't need to be.

Could you explain to me what supplement is available only in meat that cannot be reasonably obtained from another source.

I just made a kick-ass asian stir-fry that will last me at least one week for $5.
And those who say we NEED meat, what is your reasoning or proof? Because it basically just sounds like you guys will feel un-manly if you said otherwise, or if someone eats un-manly food it won't give you manly energy. All that meat gives you is protein, and a few trace other vitamins and nutrients. Hell, many types of meat are actually bad for you and decrease your energy (save for such things as chicken and fish). Again, I'm not bashing anyone's diets, it's just a lot of misinformation.

There are health risks with any diet that need to be addressed no matter what you choose to do. I am a meat eater and I don't care to be honest. I fish, I hunt, I eat meat. That is what I was raised to do. I don't care if people want to eliminate meat from their diet, as far as I'm concerned to each their own. That is what freedom is all about. The only time it becomes annoying to me is when the vegans and vegetarians try to push their agendas on those that don't follow their way of thinking. I eat meat because I like it and that is what I was raised to enjoy. I am not going to justify it, nor do I feel compelled to justify it. I just like it. If people don't want to eat meat, I don't look down on them for it. I expect the same respect in turn.

The bottom line is that animals were meant to be eaten.
Look at any ecosystem, and you'll see ambulatory creatures being eaten by other ambulatory creatures. That's simply the way things are. It was that way before humans existed, and it'll be that way long after we're gone.

I eat red meat constantly and I have been meaning to cut back on it for a while because at the rate I'm going I will have colon cancer by the time I'm forty. I have been trying to eat a lot of fish and pasta lately along with the odd vegetable dish but I find myself right back on the meat train shortly after.
Changing your diet drastically is one of the hardest things to do, it's up there with quitting smoking.

Vitamin B12 is one vitamin that is mainly found in meat that may be difficult for vegetarians to obtain through their diet.
This thread is retarded. Who cares if you eat meat, and who cares if you don't. It is a lifestyle choice that not everyone adheres to. You can live perfectly fine on either diet.

Protein. While protein can be obtained from beans and legumes, there are a few problems:
1. Every single bean and legume besides peanuts are completely fucking gross.
2. Most beans make you gassy.
3. Peanuts are becoming an increasingly taboo food product because women are giving their children deadly strong peanut allegeries by ingesting unacceptable amounts of it while pregnant or nursing. Schools are banning peanuts, restaurants are cutting it out of their menus, all because of bad parenting.
That chart also has both eggs on it in two places. Well, what the fuck are eggs? Future meat, that's what. If you have qualms about eating meat but not about eating eggs, your views are inconsistent and dumb.

I never understood this thinking from vegetarians, either. Why is it ok for some animals to die, but others must live? Because fish aren't cute?

The eggs we get in stores are unfertilized, so you're not killing anything by eating them. You can still argue that it's inconsistent, but that's the general reasoning behind vegetarians who eat eggs.

If you're referencing things such as plants, then many vegetarians rationalize it by saying that plants automatically reproduce or are re-grown much more easily than animals on farms that are (in many cases) forced to in-breed to the point where the meat is adversely affected, or their numbers dwindle.

Although, if you remember Roald Dahl's "The BFG" (that's "Big Friendly Giant," not an ironic Doom reference), trees, flowers and other plants feel pain, and actually emit screams when picked--they just scream at a register so high/low, humans can't hear them.

Yeah, I get it. I really don't abstain from meat due to some kind of humane thing. It's mostly due to balance of nature and for my overall health (I'm hearing a lot of misinformed bullshit that makes me believe that I'm worse off, even though I'm not). Hell, I still hunt and fish (Because no matter my left-wing bohemian ways, I'm still an Appalachian Country Fuck), and I'm going to have to start eating meat soon if I want to further my career as a chef. I hunt my fair legal share and hand off the meat to local curers who then just hand it off to friends or church dinners for free, and the local fishing areas require catch-and-release due to pollution anyway, so I feel little inner conflict in those regards.
Again, I don't mind the bare fact that people eat meat/animal products or don't, it's when the misinformation about "Vegetarianism KILLS you and makes you FAG," gets out, it bothers me that you're lying to force other people to live like you because you're insecure and need other people to think like you to feel validated.

Yeah, but then he got introduced to the joy of bacon and eggs thanks to the Queen and her butler. Plus, he had Fobscottle...Frobscoffle...er, whatever that magic upside-down soda was. So it all turned out good in the end.
