Has anyone ever played this game? I heard it was one of the best RPGs ever. I didn't even know that Sega had a console before the Genesis.

I'll be honest, I could never get into the Phantasy Star games. But I hear they're excellent.

They made several sequels for the Genesis.

I played it when it came out. I had to beg my parents to get it for me because it was like $80 when it was released. It was definitely a fun game, but the 3-D dungeons get hard as hell late in the game though. If you enjoy role playing games you will like it, just be prepared to get pissed off when you step on invisible trap doors and have to find your way back up again. I'm sure there are maps of the levels out there now, so it might be easier. I didn't have that benefit back then.

It's awesome, but very old school. Drawing your own maps, grinding for a loooong time, etc. I think it's one of those things that seems better if you were around when it was new.

I played it on the GBA's Phantasy Star Collection, got up to the point where I got a mage then FFIV Advance came out, and since then I've misplaced it...

I have it for the master system, and it is very good.

Played it on the GBA Phantasy Star Collection, and had to use a walkthrough during the whole game. Don't get any clues on where to go, so what's a gamer to do?

It's a damn patience exercise, but well worth it.
The plot, gameplay and story might be even better than the NES's Final Fantasies and Dragon Warriors altogether.
In fact, it's one of the few games on the Master System that actually mattered back in the day.

I've played this on Phantasy Star collection for the GBA. While I love PSII & PSIII, the first Phantasy Star just doesn't do it for me. The enemies are annoyingly brutal and the first-person mazes are almost impossible to traverse without drawing yourself a map.

It's a helluva hard game, for sure. The sequels are far superior to the original, but this one is still a lot of fun. The 3-D dungeons catch a lot of flack, but to be honest, I think the shitty dungeon designs in PS II are much worse.
