Well, IGN dropped a bit of news a couple days ago. According to the online version of Japan's Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper, there are sequels to Wii Fit and Mario Galaxy in the works.

While the Mario title is not necessarily confirmed as a "sequel" I still have my hopes up that this will be a satisfying and intense platformer, and not a new Mario Party title, or worse (Mario & Sonic at the Olympics: 1980 USSR).

According to the article, they said this new Mario title is intended to help spur Japanese Wii sales, keeping that in mind, I would imagine this would be a more hardcore title.

Anyways, Galaxy was highly enjoyable so I am already aboard the "stoked" train on this.

Galaxy is currently my favorite game of all time. I'd love to see what type of sequel they could do, but to be honest I'd be happy with a shitty map pack style addon.

Absolutely, that game is soothing to play, almost therapeutic. I would love a more open (large world) game more akin to Mario 64 though.

As long as they offer the same difficulty level as Galaxy I am all for it. I thought that Mario 64 was too hard for the average gamer. Also the collection levels for Galaxy weren't tedious as much as they were exploratory. The exact opposite for 64.

Do you have any idea how long it takes Shiggy to make a game!?

If we're hearing about a new Mario title NOW, we won't see it until Wii-2 launches.

Wii Fit 2 though, they can crank that out by the end of the year if necessary.

Also, I would DEFINITELY play Mario & Sonic at the 1980 Moscow Olympics!!!

True, but according to the article, the primary aim of the new Mario title would be to drive up Japanese Wii sales.

But the last two generations have only had one Mario canon game, so why would this one be any different.

The reason we only get one Mario canon game per console is because Nintendo has decided that every Mario game needs to be an event in and of itself. Each game needs its own unique gameplay style and elements, and thus, they have to build a new game engine from the ground every time. But honestly, why can't we just have Galaxy 2? The Japanese version of SMB2 came out a year after SMB1, and everyone loved it. Well, except NOA.

Yea, but NES also got Mario 3 in Japan in 1988, only 3 years after the release of Mario 1.

Three canon titles on one console, man, the NES didn't know how good it had it.

Yeah, and the Genesis had 3.5 Sonic titles! Not only that, but it almost had 4.5!

I really think that the current gaming consoles aren't going anywhere for a while. Nintendo needs to spice things up since they have been selling gimmicky hardware. I wouldn't doubt if they release a second round of their premier titles.

Zelda, Metroid, Mario... I would put my money on 2 out of 3 having an additional full scale release on the Wii.

Nintendo needs a new console out by Christmas 2011, preferably sooner. The average console life these days is five years, so ideally, Nintendo should have a new console out by November 2010. At the time that the Wii came out, the future of gaming was uncertain. In bringing its revolutionary vision to the world, Nintendo took several gambles:

1) They de-emphasized online play
2) They ignored HD
3) They ignored storage space

Since then, it has become clear that DLC is an important part of modern gaming, and that massive storage space is necessary to hold it. It has also become clear that Nintendo's lack of user-friendly online play has hurt them with serious gamers, and HD is quickly becoming the norm in American and Japanese households.

If Nintendo hopes to continue growing its market share, and if they hope to attract A-List titles from third party developers, they need an HD-ready console with a hard drive and easy online play out as soon as possible. If necessary, they can take the DSi route and release the hardware before they have any exclusive titles ready for it. Above all though, Nintendo must avoid the mistakes of Sony. Wii-2 must be backwards compatible with GCN and Wii-1 titles.

Syd, as an alternative they could retain their front end system and focus on a back end cloud. Why waste the money on a new physically expensive machine with huge R&D implications when you could offload portions of processing to a cloud and use a direct connection over wireless to present it.

I'm not saying it will happen, but it sure as hell would be slick if it did.

It wouldn't be hard to build a newgen Wii. They pretty much know what they have to do, they just have to build it. I mean, look at the SNES. It's one of the most beloved consoles of all-time and it was hastily thrown together in response to the success of the Mega Drive in Japan.

I just want a straight Mario game, with no gimmicks. Something Mario 64-ish, but maybe with more classical elements thrown in, such as a linear path or an overworld like in SMW.
