Morally I've always supported vegetarianism, I'm enough of an animal lover I've never liked the idea of eating them, I've never had near enough willpower to actually stop doing it, though. But lately, I haven't even been able to. I'll try to eat meat and won't be able to get the thoughts out of my head that what is in my mouth used to be a living animal, I feel repulsed and disgusted and have thrown up once or twice thinking about that. I am now resorting to vegetarianism as a way of avoiding the eating of flesh (It almost seems too obvious!). This however sucks, as I believe chicken to be one of the tastiest things on the planet.

Anyway, I got to thinking, first of all, is this normal? It kind of sounds to me like my brain isn't exactly functioning properly, any thoughts or advice on that would be greatly appreciated. And secondly, any vegetarians on the forums?

<Drew_Linky> Well, I've eaten vegetables all of once in my life.

There's nothing wrong with vegetarianism, unless you start throwing red paint on fur coats and preaching to your friends everytime they order a burger at dinner.

There is, however, something VERY wrong with veganism.

That being said, one of my proudest acheivements in college was convincing my vegetarian suitemates that the reason they were always sick was because they were missing out on vital nutrients in meat that they needed. I happened to be right. They probably could have got those same nutrients from soy and peanut butter, but the dining hall didn't have those.

I was just more worried because I've been eating meat fine all my life, and now all of a sudden I seem to be quite horrified at the idea of it. I also didn't think vegetarians actually got to vomitting over meat consumption.

I knew someone who was a vegan and became anemic.

I went vegetarian a while ago (sorry veganists, cheese is one of the greatest things on this planet, and milk was made to drink). It's not as difficult as people make it out to be. You have to be ready to learn how to make your own food, and either get on vitamins or develop a taste for soy, tofu, or other high-protein alternatives.

I actually went through something similar for a while. I'd get ungodly depressed every time I bit into meat, and I'd feel like I was going against my beliefs just because I was afraid of getting shit from people about being a vegetarian. If it really bothers you that much, then just quit all the other meats besides chicken, and see how it makes you feel. If you think it's a good step, then go for it. If not, then you at least tried to see what was wrong.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I don't mind people who don't eat meat because of their personal choices, but I do mind it if you try to tear down meat producers. If you don't want to eat meat, fine, but don't ruin it for people who love meat. Protesting = bad idea.

Learn to love veal. If you can eat that without feeling guilty, chicken will feel like nothing. Wink

I swear to God, veal parmesan and veal francaise are two of the most delicious entrees you can order at an Italian restaurant.

You need to know your nutritional needs better than most. Getting full protiens and enough of it is a whole other animal when you can't eat them.

You'll outgrow it. Eventually the desire for a big thick hunk of bacon-wrapped steak will intrude your mind and you would be willing to bite it right out of the cow's ass as it stood there, just to have the savory juices tickle your taste buds.

Q: Do you know what they do to those poor chickens?

A: No but it's delicious. Razz

I feel better about eating meat after what Hugh Jackman said about how he probably ate/wiped out entire gene pools of chickens to get in shape for X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

I haven't touched meat since infancy. True story. Yay for hippie parents. Weird thing, though, I'm healthier than some of my meat-eating friends, a fact that I proudly boast when given the chance. Of course, I get the occasional flu and my allergies are a bitch, but aside from that, I have a pretty normal BMI, my heart rate is great and I don't have a single ounce of fat on me.

I mostly refrain from using animal products, except for milk (not cheese, though - google "rennet" to see why), eggs and honey.

The downside is, I'm 17 years old, I'm 5'3" and I weigh 99 pounds. Seriously, people bench-press me on PE.

How DARE you slaughter innocent vegetables for your perverse dietary desires? This hamburger here, back when it was a cow, had a chance. A chance to break down a pen, a chance to kick some guy with a pistol in the nuts. A chance to fight back.

When you yanked your carrot from it's cold safe home in the earth, did you care? When you boiled it alive, did you hear it scream? How would you feel if the carrot did that to you, huh?

I love meat, but I completely quit eating beef a long time ago just from personal choice. It's gross.

Also, I am pretty sure humans are the only animals that drink another animals milk. *Puke*

I eat meat and I'm perfectly healthy. I've also helped butcher steers before and killed chickens to make delicious fried chicken homemade style.

Vegetarianism is stupid. Humans eat meat because we NEED it. Most vegetarians I've known have been sick like 95% of the time because they're not eating properly. People can eat meats, grain, dairy, and fruits/vegetables, and we SHOULD eat all of those. They are all good for us for different reasons.

Also, yes the chicken you are eating used to be alive, but know what? That fucking tomato you're eating used to be alive too. That bread was a living thing too before it was killed, shredded, and added with other things to make dough. EVERYTHING we eat was alive at one point. That's how nature works: things eat other things.

Don't forget the horrible death that the innocent little yeasts undergo by the millions to make that bread rise, either.

I can understand the moral objection to eating meat, but the truth is the human body just isn't designed to NOT eat meat.

You don't see healthy, athletic, robust looking vegetarians that often, at least in my experience. They always look sickly and malnourished.

There's no way in Hell I could be a vegetarian, I can't stand most veggies. I could probably be a fruitanarian though, love fruit.

Yeah, well think about most of your average omnivore person. They get colds, flus, stomach viruses, food poisoning just like all of your "vegetarians you know." We eat meat mainly for the protein, and that can be replaced easily in a diet.

And for the whole "all eating is death thing," there are a variety of reasons people go vegetarian. Some say processing animals at the rate we do ruins the balance of nature, some do it because cattle ranches cause global warming, some don't believe that they're healthier on meat, and some just flat-out don't how the process is done, among many other reasons. I do it for a couple of reasons, and it's worked for me because I feel less conflicted, and I rarely ever get sick. I say if it makes sense for someone to do it, and it makes them feel better, then what's the harm?

I always hear "as long as you don't start preaching to me," when people talk about vegetarians, but it seems more common to hear some faux-macho prick rattle on about how we're "meant to eat meat," or give vegetarians shit about it all. I personally think humans can be omnivores, but we just need to shut up and eat what we want.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
