From tv.com

Cartoon Network ditching all-'toon format

Cable station no longer living up to its name, will get in to live-action reality shows, scripted programs.

First MTV stops showing music videos, now this? Cartoon Network is sticking with the "Network" portion of its name, but ditching the strictly "Cartoon" bit, the company announced today. Nineteen new projects were announced, and less than half will be hand-drawn.

"These exciting new projects represent the next phase in Cartoon Network's ambitious, ongoing strategy to re-invent the network and re-energize our youth business overall," said Stuart Snyder.

These new non-cartoons will start airing in the coming 2009-2010 season and feature reality and scripted programs, most of which sound like pint-sized versions of programs currently airing on other networks.

Highlights: The Othersiders is a mini-Ghost Hunters, with five friends exploring scary places; Destroy Build Destroy is like Human Wrecking Balls, with two teams blowing stuff up; Dude, What Would Happen is a Mythbusters clone; Bobb'e Says takes the ridiculously funny child actor Bobb'e J. Thompson (Human Giant, Role Models) in his own take of America's Funniest Home Videos.

Also announced was a live-action Ben 10: Alien Force movie, a Scooby-Doo! prequel telefilm, and a full CG movie titled Firebreather!

Don't worry all you glassy-eyed college students--it doesn't look like the late-night Adult Swim block will be affected by any of this.

Well, that network is over now.

It was a good run.

I knew it was going to happen eventually. I'm not surprised but it's still pretty sad. I remember back when the best they had was Rocky & Bullwinkle and a buttload of Looney Toon shorts. The Shorts were pretty damn boring save for when they did the Tex Avery specials but I still loved that network. I haven't been watching TV that often anyway, I suppose I'm going to have to start relying solely on the internet to watch my favorite shows. This whole thing only proves what I've known all along. Live-action human beings are overrated in any format save for Married with Children and any SNL that takes place after they started using people I've never heard of. Their are a few more exceptions, but I'm too tired to list them at the moment.

EDIT: That was a bit harsh on my part. I'm still pretty pissed though.

You forgot Sons Of Anarchy, though their is a vague Married With Children connection to it, tying in with your original thesis.

Apparently they think we want Reality Shows.

MTV added 16 to their line up and now this on the Cartoon Network. How are they NOT getting the message? We don't want reality shows. Reality sucks, that's why we watch TV.

And that's especially why we watch cartoons.

Nonononononononononono fuck this shit

Reality shows are the fucking cancer of TV and it's infected CN too? Damn, son. They've made stupid decisions in the past but this takes the cake. CARTOON NETWORK guys, show cartoons. Hand-drawn, not CG, not this bullshit.

Fuck, to think I actually had hope in them since Nickelodeon turned to shit around '02.

My dad loves that show. From what little I've seen Ron Perlman does an excellent job on the show.

I hate that line-up with a passion. And great, one of them is another ghost hunting show. I can't stand those stupid ghost hunting shows. You have a bunch of idiots running around with "science equipment" you can purchase at Radio Shack and usually a "psychic" thats only job is to make stupid noises and pretend there is something there when there clearly isn't.

I never seen the point of it. They always act like their is someone just out of their line of vision, however they never actually investigate. I especially dislike it when they "see" something and pretend like it might be one of the other investigators when they know damn well that they could easily clear up the situation if they just contacted them via the ridiculously-priced state-of-the-art communication devices they didn't need in the first place. Those shows are never scary to begin with however I good way to make them watchable is to imagine every episode without the eerie sound-effects and music. After you take those away it just devolves into a bunch of morons wandering around empty buildings with a bunch of glorified toys.

I agree. I can't really think of anything to add to the thread other than Sad .

Saw the commercial for this a week ago, it's sad, but CN was already sucking with crappy new cartoons(Outside of Chowder). We at least have Boomerang, but after five years, I won't doubt that CN will try to force in the crappy stuff.

Yeah, but how long will it take for Boomerang to be corrupted. After MTV stopped playing videos it only took a couple years for MTV2 to follow suit. VH1 Classic is the only "music" station I have that actually plays music (that I like).

Boomerang makes me feel better because it's always good when I need a JLU fix.

Why in the hell are all these stations doing reality shows? Those should only be allowed to be on CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox.

In fact, why in God's Holy Name is Cartoon Network doing reality shows now? Why?! I mean, Total Drama Island was acceptable, since it was ENTIRELY FUCKING ANIMATED, but these new reality shows aren't!

Cartoon Network is going to be the second station that I can think of that has betrayed its very name, with the first being fucking MTV.

Edit: Oh well, at least I still have my video games and CSI: Miami.

I am disgusted with Cartoon Network. I'd rather watch more shows like Chowder and Flapjack than that live action shit. It's like when Nickelodeon got more live action shows. And that CGI crap too. It's alright, but I want shows like Rugrats again. Could they at least make live action shows that don't suck? They always cancel the best ones

You know what I just remembered after reading your post? Nick Arcade! We should almost do it again, except I'm not sure if today's people would have the same appreciation about the video games we all grew up with.

Most people wouldn't appreciate video games you grew up with, but I live with Syd. I have no choice haha.

Am I the only person here that misses Tech TV? Last thing I knew they merged with G4 and everthing turned to shit. I appreciate the MTV analogy, but G4's changing into a bullshit station is more recent than MTV's change.

I second this, but i'm not too surprised.

Why? Seriously. With Generations of cartoon shows they could show, market shitty merchandise from those show (got to be capitalistic) would be less retarded then NOT showing any damn toons at all. Then again, there must not be a profit in it anymore.

Soon, hand drawn cartoons will be a thing of the past. Then it will be revived after decades of people saying "CG is old and sucks" and the younger generation will be like "Holy smokes, this drawn stuff is so new and original and awesome."

Yes, hand drawn cartoons will be so yesterday, that it will be thought of as new and original if revived. Hell, i still respect and enjoy hand drawn animation. It's why anime is so fucking awesome. (am i right, Mr. Bomberman?)

It's like CEOs and networks think kids want adult stuff like real action/drama shows with dark adult themes and crap (which they do but don't give a shit about watching them because they are too young to understand). Cartoons are perceived as childish and hand drawn is too expensive compared to CG (i'm assuming this because if it was the reverse then hand drawn would still be around) and shows with live actors are perceived as adult but of course the shows for the kids have to be dumbed down and translated so kids can relate to them.

It's dwindled down to something i like to call adultardation: Giving kids almost adult like entertainment but dumbing it down to the point where they can understand it and censored enough so the producers don't piss off the soccer moms.

(It's kind of like trying to come to a compromise with the conservative father and liberal mother to what their kids should watch, dad wants them to watch something more grown up so they grow some balls and mom wants it safe enough so they don't get traumatized, the end result is something nobody wants to watch, like 4kids' One Piece)

This adultardation is not the answer though, it is thee cancer that is robbing these kids of the same childhood we had. I get with the concept of moving with the times but there are just somethings that can never get old, like hand drawing your fucking cartoons instead of sitting in front of the computer or paying some kid minimum wage to dump grape juice on the actor who could not get a gig because he sucks.

This is why i gave up on network TV, it's all cookie cut to such an extent it become predictable and mundane. There are some good shows on both network TV and Cable, but the more this adultardation tries to reach out to a wider audience, the more it alienates it self from the audience as a whole.

adultardation, now there is a word Oxford should pick up. Twisted Evil
