Honestly, I've never given it any thought.

As in? If you mean RPGs on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, there are quite a bit.(Phantasy Star, Shining Force, Sword of Vermillion, etc.) Though I personally can't stand most JRPGs.

If you're looking for recommendations, I'd say you couldn't go wrong with Phantasy Star II-IV, the Shining Force series (including Shining In the Darkness), and the Might & Magic II port. Those were always my favorites, at least.

If your looking for something highly polished for the console, I would highly suggest Phantasy Star IV.

One word: Shadowrun
Five more words: Landstalker - Treasure of King Nole
I'd also reccomend Rings of Power, but this is like crucifying the casual gamer.

I'd forgotten about Shadowrun and Landstalker. Both are decent deviations from the console RPG norm.

Rings of Power is really open-ended, though... if you play a lot of PC RPGs, it wouldn't be a problem, but if you're a veteran of Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior type games, it can be really overwhelming.

Shadowrun is fun for a while, particularly if you're into the setting, but requires waaaaaaaay too much boring and pointless grinding. The matrix runs are the most fun part.

And while I'm partial to the first game, I third Shining Force 2 as a mandatory play. One of the best RPGs ever.

My choice would be Wonder Boy in Monster World. It's a pretty good action RPG.

More votes for PSII and Wonder Boy.

I also liked Light Crusader, but replaying it recently had me wondering why.

I was JUST about to mention Light Crusader, but I scrolled down and saw that you already did. Good call.

There isn't very much Genesis love here, which I will bitch about in another thread. :p

Anyway....Beyond Oasis was pretty good, had a superior prequel on Saturn, so you may want to try the Saturn version first if you want to go chronologically.
