1st - A Buffy movie that has nothing to do with the Whedonverse, or even the original Kristy Swanson movie:
From THR:
| Quote: |
“Buffy” creator Joss Whedon isn’t involved and it’s not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.
The new “Buffy” film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon.
One of the underlying ideas of “Buffy” allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential. |
#2 - Flight Of The Navigator:
From Filmdrunk:
| Quote: |
The 1986 original told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. NASA scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family. The movie grossed only $17 million when it was released but was later rediscovered on VHS, becoming a cult hit.
I swear to God, at least 50% of the kids’ movies made in the 80s involved trying to keep the government from doing experiments on someone. What was up with that? In any case, the remake is set to be written by the guy who wrote Wild Hogs, so I’m sure it will be an incisive parable for our times. |
I think both of these are terrible ideas. Especially Buffy. If you shit on the Buffy fans by throwing away everything they love about it, then who the hell is going to see this movie? Seriously?

Well, a Buffy movie might not be THAT bad.
Actually, it'll probably be pretty bad.

They are apparently doing a remake of Short Circuit as well.

I heard about the Buffy one on the Onion today. That's just horrible. No Whedon involvement is just sacrilege.

Well, Hollywood just took another huge dump on more franchises. But really, are any of us surprised? There is absolutely ZERO creativity in movies anymore. Everything made in this decade is a remake, sequel, book adaptation, or is in hyper-gimmick 3D. There turning Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and Where the Wild Things Are in movies, for fuck's sake.

No remake should ever happen.

What do you mean now? Assault on Precinct 13 was a remake of an obscure classic. Gone in 60 Seconds and The Fast and The Furious were also both remakes of obscure movies, though not so much classics. There hasn't been a new idea in entertainment in thousands of years.

Buffy wasn't that much of a shock, it's still a strong franchise through the comics but Navigator? What made navigator cool was the fact that it was in the 1980s and cheese as all hell but in that good satisfying way. Making it now will be like cheep imitation, with overblown CGI that we've all been desensitized to. And the sad part is, the original will be forgotten but the younger generation.
I've never felt confident that remakes will be good, it just feels(/is) a cheep way of getting a quick buck.

They should remake Sidekicks, but Barry should be played by Chuck Norris' cock or something, since Jonathan Brandis hung himself, and Chuck IS hung. Chuck Norris could still be Chuck Norris, since his cock is already in the starring role.
Joe Piscopo could be replaced by, hmm.... Seth Rogen. Yeah. He's already in everything anyway.

Those are both bad ideas. Navigator should NEVER happen. It wouldn't even work well today.
Buffy has that slayer loophole, but then can you still call it "Buffy"?

They'll probably CGI him instead of making a robot like they did for the first two.
What in the world could Short Circuit 3 possibly be about?
The first one was: Tank destroying robot built by a major contractor to the military becomes self aware and goes on a hilarious and heart warming romp with a animal crazy chick and some indian guy with a hilarious accent.
The second one was: Nova totally gives up on recapturing their multimillion dollar piece of war technology that has become self aware so it will seem less implausible that it ends up foiling a major bank robbery while sporting a totally rad mohawk. Plus there's lots of product endorsement stickers on him this time and OMFG HE HANG GLIDES! Then he gets plated in gold and becomes a bonafide member of the New York citizenry, despite having taken part in street gang racket to steal car stereos.
What could three possibly be about?
Johnny 5 hangs out with Ludacris and gets plated in platinum and diamonds, and after helping him win a drift race competition he takes on the crooked fat cats on Wall Street by hacking into their 401ks and transferring all the stolen money back into the economy. He then helps the Autobots destroy the Terminators thus saving mankind.

I think it may be a remake/reboot and not a sequel. Regardless it just shouldn't happen.

Don't have the correct permissions on this particular machine to install stuff and don't have the time to wiggle around it. I'll check it out later somewhere else.

I took a look at it and it says it was written in 1989. Most of the dialogue in the script is just stupid and really needs a re-write to make bring it to modern times.

something that goes back to basics, before overblown CGI.
Those movies are classic because the actors actually had something to react to and interact with, making them more believable. I'm including Short Circuit and Navigator to this as well. I would go to a movie purely on the fact that they omit any use of CGI.
IS there any movie out that does not rely on CGI (besides dramas and dating movies)?

Well those Terminator tank things in Terminator 3 were actual machines. They were the ones that the T-X activated near the end.

Not any big blockbusters that I can think of no, although there are plenty of smaller adventure/action films that don't have the budget for that sort of thing.
I don't have a problem with CGI when its used to create a big, panoramic view of a landscape/city/whatever. I don't even mind when its used to extend sets. But I do agree that something gets lost when actors have to always pretend to react to things that aren't there. Plus, CG characters just don't have the same weight on screen, really.
For an excellent example of CGI done RIGHT, see Danny Boyle's "Sunshine." (Which you should see on general principle anyway, because its freaking amazing.)

Anything made by Jackie Chan.
I don't mean any Hollywood crap with Jackie Chan in it. But, anything his production company makes. He's said himself that most of his movies cost less to make then the Music budgets for the Hollywood films he has been in.
