| I never buy any system new. What I do is make friends with people who compulsively buy everything new that comes out, and once they fall into a financial hole, I wait for them to start selling things off for a good price. I got my 80 GB PS3, 5 games, 2 controllers, and a tv for 400 bucks. That's how I got my laptop, my zune, etc... It's especially good when they are recently divorced, then it's a total liquidation sell. The last system I bought brand new was a Dreamcast. |

My interest in the recent systems is not too high. To be honest, the N64 and PC games will always be my gaming sense of choice. However, if any of the said systems drop below $100 then i may consider checking them out.
Otherwise, the only game purchases i will be making are PC or old N64 games . . . that's after the year is up though (long story)

I think I just might buy one if they lower the prices. I really don't care for next-gen games, however I'm really hoping that they'll make a Mega Man Legends 3. Since I have no idea what systems it will be released for I'll keep my eye on all three and make a decision based on that. At this point it all really boils down to their selection of games.

Good game, I like how the characters are portrayed but I still get sort of teary-eyed when the old sage dies (I always called him gusto on the previous ports where I could name him).

It really sucks that this price drop is coming now for me. The PS3 was my next gen console of choice, but because I couldn't afford the $400 dollar price tag, I bought a 360 for $150 less. (It was an elite, but used.) Anyways, the 100 dollars makes a big difference for me, and so the price drop is really badly timed, at least for me.
Oh and by the way, Blu-ray discs themselves are too expensive. I know they look better and all, but I can buy a DVD of the same thing for about 40 bucks less...

Agreed, not everything needs to be Blu-ray. I don't really care either way if a movie looks a tad sharper, that's not exactly a deal-breaker for me.

Blu-ray is just a "cool" version of DVD with more space, it's not a special movement like VHS to DVD was.

A movie needs tons of special effects to make blu-ray remotely needed. Who the fuck needs to watch The Breakfast Club on blu-ray?

Yes, PS3s are no longer backward compatible, which I think is a shame.

i was pulling this idea out of my ass but whatever
What if a newer PS3 is made that has one small motherboard just big enough to hold a bios that loads up a menu screen that says "ps2 or ps3" that would link to a ps2 or ps3 motherboard. and you can choose whether to run a ps2 or ps3. of course it would be bigger and cost more. I would buy it regardless. I love the PS2

A lot of older stuff that gets released on Blu-Ray looks like shit. Because the films weren't originally shot in HD and because the workprints often have imperfections, studios apply a technique called Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) to them, which essentially scrubs away layers of the film to remove imperfections. When used sparingly, it can make film looked better. Unfortunately, all too often it is overused, and actors end up looking creepy and waxy, like Robbie Rotten from LazyTown.

There's really no way to play PS2 games on a PS3 now? They don't even have some sort of emulator that can be stored to the hard drive?
What a blunder this is....

The PS3 hasn't been able to play PS2 games in at least a year. Even then, only the most expensive model could play them. It can still play PSX games though.
The problem is that the PS2 was apparently designed in such a way that the PS3 couldn't simply emulate its hardware; the hardware needed to physically be there.

That's pretty unbelievable. I don't know much about how computer systems work, but you'd think they could make it work somehow. Backwards compatibility was a large part of the PS2's success. You'd think they'd want to continue that trend.
Interesting that it can still play PS1 games, though.....which actually is a bigger deal to me. FF 7-9, Xenogears and Symphony of the Night FTW

Apparently the issue is that PS2 was a multi-core system. There is a PS2 emulator for PCs, but up until recently it didn't work very well for similar reasons. It runs pretty well now, but you need a ridiculously powerful computer to do so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCSX2

I read an article about how Sony will be losing money for it, but since they are in fact removing almost everything save the Blue-Ray and the XMB system they are trying to balance it out.
Frankly, I am looking forward to buying the Wii with my first decent pay check. and as a side note, fuck X-Box |
Selling it at $399 they are losing money on it. Hell they were losing money off the $499 models, the technology is very expensive and releasing it at a competitive price is very difficult. |
Looking at the whole PS2 emulator situation, they were losing money with thier 80 GB systems with the PS2 Attached. Now they have eliminated the PS2 emulator, and eventually they figured on getting rid of the PS1 emulator too. That could be why they are releasing many of thier PS1 games on the PSN. I guess Sony is hoping to get a nice big profit with reselling thier older games and their Downloadable games on the PSN, to counter thier net loss.
