The April hardwares sales figures are in and:
Nintendo holds spots 1-3 with the two DS variations and the Wii.
The 360 is in a respectable fourth place and is on course for a record-breaking sales year.
And in fifth place... PS2?
That's right, PS3 was outsold by its predecessor last month. Rumor is that Sony will be dropping the PS3's price from $400 to $300 before year's end, possibly as early as E3.

Oh wow, only $300? Let me get my checkbook.
I love my PS2, and PS3 would be my console of choice for nextgen. But there's no way I can afford that, not to mention the price of games.

$300 isn't bad. A non-shitty 360 costs that much, and a Wii is $250.

I might buy a PS3 for that price. Then I'll finally be able to play Metal Gear Solid 4.

I hear ya. MGS4 is the only Sony exclusive I care about. But I just can't justify paying $350 for one game. (system + game)
Come on, Gates.....port that shit.

No, this is true, its not bad as far as next gen prices go. It's still more than I'm personally willing to pay, is the only real point I was making. I'm sure it will help boots sales though, which is a good thing because Sony was getting the snot kicked out of them.

How much did you pay for PS2? That launched at 250, didn't it?
What would REALLY be awesome is if Sony lowers the pricing point on their new games to $50, thus forcing Microsoft to do the same.

I think the PS2 launched at $299, I remember playing that for mine.

I would buy a PS3 at $300 for the internet browser and Blueray player. I doubt I would buy any games for it though.

I wouldn't buy a PS3 for even $200, not only does it only have one or two games I would play, but I also already have a functioning DVD player, and three things in my room with internet browsing.

And I'm guessing that the Wii, as well as the DS variants, are going to continue dominating the market, especially with highly anticipated releases around the corner.
Hell, I just got Punch-Out for the Wii today, and it's pretty awesome.

I wonder if Nintendo will enact a price drop on the Wii to stay ahead of the competition. It's still selling like gangbusters, so there's no immediate need for them to, but it would allow them to make sure they stay ahead of the competition.

Syd,
My guess is they will drop the cost of the system, but might also start shipping Wii Sports separately if that is the case.

To be honest I heard the rumor as well, but I'm not in the mood to care about it. I love my PS3 and finally the games I wanted to play are going down in price too. I just bought Haze (which does indeed suck but it's a fun time waster) for ten bucks. But with it being 300 dollars, I read an article about how Sony will be losing money for it, but since they are in fact removing almost everything save the Blue-Ray and the XMB system they are trying to balance it out.
Frankly, I am looking forward to buying the Wii with my first decent pay check. and as a side note, fuck X-Box

Now that Final Fantasy XIII is also coming out for Xbox 360, there'd really be no reason for me to get a PS3, with the exception of MGS4.

Story-wise, MGS4 is the worst in the series, I have no idea gameplay-wise though.

And didn't I hear that the cutscenes cannot be skipped and were 45 minutes long?

They can be skipped, but they're overly long yeah.

You just have to press start and then skip. I felt that it sealed the storyline up altogether, but he could have taken a different path for Snake. Though Big Boss was a welcome. I'm still hoping that Kojima get's smart and re-makes the first two MSX Metal Gears.

I'd love to see remakes of the MSX games done with the MGS4 engine, or even the MGS3 engine.

Kojima keeps saying that MGS4 is the "end of the Solid franchise", but he definitely didn't say anything about the Metal Gear series as a whole. I always took that as a possibility that he'd remake the first two Metal Gear games (which, I hope he does).

I would pay more for an XBOX if it had the Browser and Blueray. Those two features hold it back from being a really good entertainment center PC.

Selling it at $399 they are losing money on it. Hell they were losing money off the $499 models, the technology is very expensive and releasing it at a competitive price is very difficult.

I never buy any system new. What I do is make friends with people who compulsively buy everything new that comes out, and once they fall into a financial hole, I wait for them to start selling things off for a good price. I got my 80 GB PS3, 5 games, 2 controllers, and a tv for 400 bucks. That's how I got my laptop, my zune, etc... It's especially good when they are recently divorced, then it's a total liquidation sell. The last system I bought brand new was a Dreamcast.
