Another one of the stupid ideas that my mom pounded into my head was the idea that if you're in the shower and the power happens to go off while you're in it, you'll be electrocuted. I've thought this over many times, and I've never quite been able to believe it, but because it was my mother that said it, I've never quite been able to not believe it.
Anybody know or heard anything about this?

How will that happen? Is there electricity running into the shower or something? And I've been in the shower and the power has gone off and I haven't been electrocuted.
This idea is stupid. Unless you have some kind of electrical device in the shower to begin with and if you do you're probably already dead regardless if the power goes off.

Just how do you expect to be electrocuted with no electricity?
She probably meant if you're taking a shower during a thunderstorm and the house is struck, which can be dangerous, but is very unlikely.

The only way I can possibly imagine something like that happening is if the power goes out, comes back on, and there's some kind of big power surge that knocks out a light or appliance in the bathroom. And it or part of it (or a spark I guess) happens to fall into the shower with you. *shrug*

If the power goes out, aren't you less likely to be electrocuted no matter where you are?

Well, I think the danger would come when the power comes back ON, not while its actually off. The problem of a power surge IS real--I always unplug my computer, TV, etc during a power outage, just in case.

My parents used to tell me not to take showers during a thunderstorm. I guess the idea is that if the house is struck, the electricity will come in through the water in the pipes and shock you.
My parents said a lot of dumb shit. Masturbating totally doesn't make you go blind.

Mythbusters tested this. They rules it "plausible" since while the lightning didn't travel down and strike the dummy in the shower, it did travel into the little hut they set up and start a small fire.
I think they also made some assumptions with it though (such as the place not being built properly).

Are you serious!? And to think I could have been masturbating this whole time!

I got shocked once while taking a hot bath, but it was because the conducing wires were exposed and the electricity in my house kept going.
Maybe it is possible to get shocked after the power goes off, but it depends on other factors about electric physics I can't remember for now. I believe it has to do with conductors and such.

I've heard of the toaster being 'accidentally' dropped into the jakoozy.

If they think you are going to get killed by electrified water, not likely. You would have to have a perfect, uninterupted stream of water to carry the charge. Like this:
Source of Electricity __________________________________________________ You.
Guess what, I dare you to find me a shower head that shoots a pefect stream of water with no breaks in it. Most shower distribute water more like this:
Source of Electricity __ _ ___ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ ___ __ _ _ ____ __ _ ___ __ _ You.
See the problem? No closed circuit.
Mythbusters tried to make a water powered taser, and this was one of the issues they had. They couldn't find a way to keep the stream of water from breaking in transit. And, even when they did, the voltage drop off was too great.

I thought the supposed danger was from electricity being conducted to the drain at the bottom of the tub, not the stream from the shower head. I always assumed that could be possible since most drains are metal and you are standing in a puddle of water. That would mean that lightning would need to strike something leading to the waste water pipes though.

It's possible. Alot of older homes use the plumbing pipes as the ground for the circuit breakers, so it is possible, (Though, not likely) that a lightning bolt could strike the main power feed going into your home and shoot a bolt through the ground cable (Which is usually unjacketed) and travel to your pipes, the dispersement would be through all the pipes though. It would be like it hitting a spiderweb and the voltage would be distributed multiple directions, so not only would you not get the full voltage, but also water doesn't conduct as well as you may believe. Tap water is more conducting then distilled, but even then.

Note to self, when buying house, find out if drain is grounded to plumbing...
