Hey, have you all done any of the FF challenges?
The best are, in my opinion:
FFVI:
No equipment;
No Espers;
No equipment (relics) or Espers
FFIV:
Keep only Cecil alive, all other characters must die (you kill them);
Secret of Mana: (included for obvious reason)
Only the Boy can be alive (GP becomes easy!!!)
FFI:
One Red Mage can own the game EASILY on the GBA version.
In earlier versions I would suggest the Fighter, his equip abilities are great!
The 4 White Mage challenge is as old as the hills, anyone done it?
I beat it with one Red Mage.
Best equipment.
Chaos=Reset (99:100).
Final Fantasy Adventure:
I beat that game without using spells.
It is possible, just make sure you have a shit load of potion! (rather easy challenge)

To be fair, one of anything can easily beat the GBA version. That game is so ridiculously broken.

I am going to have to agree with this, that FFVI challenge sounds very brutal/time consuming.

I did the Solo Fighter on Final Fantasy. Chaos was the hardest part. One SLOW spell and you're done.

I finished Chaos off with my White Mage on the GBA.
Also, you shut your mouth about the GBA version. It was the first one I've beaten and for sentimental reasons I will murder you if you say even one word more.
Still, it wasn't a perfect port, sure, but it did the job - the game's really about being able to play it on a bus or in school - and you don't want endless grinding to follow you everywhere, do you?
Yeah, thought so.

You wanna impress me on Dawn of Souls, go beat the optional dungeons, including all the bosses, with a White Mage.

I had a white mage in the party while I beat them. Does that count?
I didn't actually beat that water dungeon, because it was too damn long. I just didn't have the patience to.
I might try it again with the PSP version.
Fun challenge: I'm stuck with my party on level 17 (Fighter, Thief, White Mage, Black Mage) in Marilith's dungeon. I'm right at her and all my characters are low on HP and the mages don't have any MP. Both beating Marilith and leaving the dungeon to use a cottage to heal and restore are equally impossible. Try getting out of that.

Hardly. While I'm not sure I could beat Kary in that situation without some luck, I've run away from tougher spots. Limp your ass back to town with level 7s out of the Marsh Cave with 3 dead and a poisoned Thief...on the REAL game. Then we can talk.

Full party? Try lvl 4 in the Marsh Cave. When I was quite young, I used to run from all, yes ALL, random battles in dungeons (in FFI a Thief was a must for this). I did this for FFI and FFIV, as well as FFLII (gameboy). I was, by default, the master of the low-level game in my area. I never really grinded levels because the thought didn't occur to me for a game (Mario never had to do it!). I used to get the Class Change from Bahamat when I was like level 10. It really makes you a better Console-RPGer IMHO. I believe that FFVI was the first game that made fighting the random dungeon baddies no problem, given the god-like status of any one of the characters with the Esper system; that's the one I started fighting Randoms in anyways.

What really sucks about most jRPGs is how the battles are presented. To make the game a fun, seamless experience, you can't half-ass the job. You need to have boss battles hard, to make them memorable, yet all the random encounters have to be quick, so you can go back to exploring fast. I hated it with FF1 on the NES, where a battle with one Imp would sometimes take around a minute or so.
Still, the battle theme was awesome, so it made it all up.

I would have to say one of the toughest challenges I ever tried was a 4BM/no magic/no magic items challenge on the original NES FF. I never made it past Lich because I didn't have the patience to grind like it would have required, but it is a fun one if you have the time and don't play for hours on end.
1BM/no magic might be the ultimate challenge; not sure if its even realistically possible. I guess people have done it with a Thief, but even so...BMs are way more worthless combat-wise.

Yeah, Dawn of Souls is crap aside from the extra dungeons.
As for the REAL FF1, there's not just a four White Mage challenge, there's also a ONE White Mage challenge. Good luck with that one. I believe GameFAQs has walkthroughs/tips for both.

One White Mage!? I might as well try beating the game playing as a piece of toilet paper. j/k
I forgot to mention that if anyone plays Final Fantasy Adventure with no magic, you will have to use the Ice spell in certain places in order to create "weights" for switches. So, really only 99.56% of the game is beatable with NO magic.
As an aside:
I just started a new game in FFVI in order to do the no Esper, low level challenge. My question is, why does Kefka even need to use the Slave Crown on Terra? Gestahl found her when she was only 2. Are we to believe that the Emperor couldn't have raised her to swear fealty to him? Just doesn't seem right... OR, is it her Esper heritage that keeps her from siding with evil?

That sounds like a fun challenge. I'm assuming that the Enemy-Skill Materia makes or breaks the game in that way. The only thing I can gripe about FFVII is that the Kalm Village flashback scene is long and loses its magic after seeing it several times (same thing for the 'Partitioning of Cloud's Consciousness' scene). Almost boring. Thankfully, Nobuo Uematsu's genius shines through to keep me going!
EDIT:
The most fun one is the No Equipment, No Relic (except Sprint Shoes), Natural Magic Challenge for FFVI. It's not as hard as it sounds, and it really brings the characters' abilities to life. You come to appreciate that Terra is a mage and that Sabin is a fighter, and that Locke is the thief. Just make sure that you get Celes to learn Ice 2 before you go to the WoR, or you will not have a viable offense until you get Sabin, or, if you skip him, Edgar. Lvl 33 (I believe) is the level at which Terra learns Cure 2. The hardest part of the game is really just from the WoR with Celes until you get Terra back as your mage. You COULD go for Strago and Heal Wind (I believe), but then you must first rescue Relm from the Startlet demon. Doing so without Terra's Cure 2 is doable, but not exactly fun -- unless you level grind. Lvl 40 is optimal, any higher than that makes it too easy. Mog, too, is a strange, all-party healer with random success.

I have to be honest, role playing challenges never interested me. They tend to involve an insane amount of leveling up to do which really doesn't seem like a challenge to me other than having a large amount of patience. I prefer skill challenges, like knife only challenge for Resident Evil. Patience isn't my strong suit.

That would be because your initial post asked if anybody tried the challenges and I gave my honest answer. An answer doesn't always have to be yes to the question asked.

Yeah. "Grind to 99" isn't much of a challenge.

I have a FF challenge. Play FFIV for the DS normally.
Fucking shit is hard enough as it is.
I am still convinced that there is a level/enemy scaling that occurs if you level up earlier.

I'm currently sitting around after just having gotten Kain and Rosa back. Know any good spots to level up at this point?

The best place to level up is in the under world next to the unlimited pot of life. The enemies are lower level, but they still give experience. It doesn't take long to gain a few levels there. You just set everyone to auto-attack.
