A kid gets kicked out of school because he correctly considers himself to be an African American.

I am guessing that the kid in the school antagonized this situation much more than he needed to, but the issue it brings up is truer that any I can imagine. I have been saying it for years, African American is not a good way to describe skin color. Skin color should simply be described by the color that it is. It would really avoid stupid issues like this.

Despite seeming weird, the kid has a point. Charlize Theron is technically African-American too.

Yeah, it's a dumb term. If your family has been here for four or five generations, you're not African-American; you're American.
Not to mention that some people mistake Haitians and Domicans for African-Americans.

Yep, even better is when we call an ACTUAL African "African-American." I can't tell you how many times I've heard Nelson Madella referred to as an African-American. And then when I point out that no, he's just AFRICAN, I get these blank stares. 
On the subject of the white kid born in Mozambique, he does have a point like GP said. Now, if he had claimed African-American status to get, like, affirmative action credit, I would have a big problem with it. As it was, he was probably just a jerk who insisted on using that terminology, and got stuck having to not back down lest he look like an even bigger idiot.
If he had just said, "I'm from Mozambique" I think most people would have thought it was really cool, that's the ironic thing. I will say the fliers and stuff making fun of him go a little over the top though, but whatever.
