The odds are against Rocky again... but this time, it's mostly coming from the real world. Very few people expect the new Rocky movie to be a good thing, but I have my hopes.

The trailer came out last week.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/mgm/rockybalboa/trailer1/

Looks to me like the old Rock is back... not to mention the real star of Rocky VI: Paulie (and, of course, Duke).

Anyone think Paulie's going to die? You know, just because Rocky movies love to kill people...

If Paulie dies I'm stabbing somebody lol. I liked Rocky 1-4 and 5 is comedy gold. Rocky Balboa will either be really good or so bad its funny as hell. I think I'm gonna watch Rocky 4 again, he ended the Cold War in that one lol.

Four is easily the best (okay, the first is...). I'll give props to Rocky III for fighting BOTH Mr. T AND Hulk Hogan! He was busy that year... Confused

So wait, virtual Rocky fights virtual Mason and wins, so Mason challenges him for real? That's what we've come to? Really? My create-a-wrestler beat the Rock in No Mercy for the championship, so he called me out for Wrestlemania this year. I'm thinking of taking him up on it, as long as I can learn to do my character's finish, the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The notion is plausible, if not completely stereotypical and offensive.

"Cracka beat me in an XBox simulation? My friends play XBox, man. That shit's egregious. I can't tell the difference between real life and video games, so you better get his cracka ass in here so I can show the world who the REAL champion is. Get Ali in here too. I'll kick his ass too, Parkinson's or not."

And somewhere Hogan still cries because he never got that win back.

I remember them calling it a draw because it was for "charity" (not "chairity" Embarrassed OW OW OW!).

Maybe you're right Tebor, I haven't seen Rocky 3 in a few years. I remember it was for charity though because they took a picture after the match.

Yeah, I only own IV, so my recollection is as good as any.

So far I've heard two good reviews of the film. Plus, TWO BIG THUMBS UP from that Roeper show.

I'm now really excited what Stallone will do about updating and bookending Rambo.

I love me some rocky movies, but four SUCKED.

everyone can LOL at the russian killign apollo creed and all, but it wasnt a real movie.

it opens with a flashback tellign you the ending to rocky 3, then introduces the evil soviets and reintroduces you to rocky and pals, then jumps to an evil soviet training montage tellign you the soviets are badguys who use steroids. afterwards it jumps to apollo creed beign pissed off and then dying, then a sad montage for apollo creed, then a treining montage for rocky when he goes to soviet russia to fight communism and singlehandedly break down the berlin wall with his bare hands.

the entire movie was based on "america hates russia, soviets are evil."

rocky 5 sucked balls too.

Lazlow agrees with you.

I, on the other hand, loves me the "Russian Montage" films.

Oh, what a pretentious cine-snob I am. If you got that, I am SORRY! Embarrassed

When I first heard about this, I assumed the storyline would be about Rocky training an up-and-comer who reminds him of his own fighting style. Then when I heard he was actually fighting again in it, I laughed my ass off at the implausibility of the whole thing.

My favorite rocky was the one where he single handedly topples the soviet union.

I really wish they left the scene where to train his fists he starts punching the berlin wall over and over until his hands are bloody but he is rocky so he just keeps on until the wall cracks and a stray can of coca-cola (representing capitalism) is thrown by ronald raygun causing the wall to collape. Ronald then tells him "you go beat those commie bastards and show em what freedom means!"

Hey guys, guess what? I've never seen a single Rocky movie in my entire life Cool

I have a perfectly valid explanation for this. "Rocky" was completely a household name. Everybody fucking saw Rocky. So much so, that it was on cable television channels almost non-stop throughout the 90's. Well I never had cable growing up. All my friends had seen Rocky a million times, so they never wanted to watch it, so I never got a chance to watch it with my peers. My dad never rented it because he probably assumed we'd seen it on TV or at a friend's house. My mom hates Rocky, so she wouldn't have rented it. I was just young enough to miss it in theatres, and by the time it was on video I was too old to have seen it, as nobody would have wanted to rent it after watching it a million times. My theory is that Rocky saturated so much of American culture that it became accepted as a part of being American that you had seen the movie, as much so as knowing the flag salute, so nobody brought it up or offered to see it. I mean, you wouldn't walk up to a friend and go hey, man, do you know the flag salute? Of course not. So why would you do that with Rocky? So there I was, going through my whole life, somehow missing the Rocky boat, but not being allowed on because everyone else had already seen it and grown tired. The years passed, and here we are now. I still have no vested interest in seeing the movie, I probably never will. What am I missing? Should I even bother at this point?

Just a note for your frame of refference, you're talking to a person who just saw "First Blood" for the first time around this time one year ago. Same theory can apply to that movie as well, I believe.

That reminds me, in the mid 90s, I think either TNT or TBS would show all five Rockys in reverse order for some reason...

I saw the preview for Rocky VI and I'm not sure what to think. I love Rocky. I love I through V, though I used to dislike V when I was younger. The fact that the new Rocky movie is getting good reviews makes my loins stir a bit. At this point, I would actually pay to see it in the theatre, as I've never been able to watch any other Rocky movie in the theatre.

I just saw it Saturday. I found it amazingly good, and not in a so-bad-its-good way like Rocky IV (which is awesome in its own right). It's serious and sad, and it's got to do with feelings and emotions and Rocky needing to punch people in the face.

On two side-notes, Rocky looks damn good for being a billion years old, once he's all trained up. I wish I look that good when I'm three thousand years old. Also, I wish they would have developed Mason 'The Line' Dixon a bit more; it looked like they were going to, and then they kind of didn't. Someone said he was the most sympathetic antagonist since Apollo Creed and considering his competition (Mr. T, Dolph Lundgren, and Captain Stupid from V) I'd have to agree.

But maybe I'm biased, because Rocky III and IV are two of my favoritest sports movies ever.

There was a strange and highly-unexpected bit of comedy however. Not during the movie, but during the previews. They showed this trailer for this movie about werewolves and action and gothical crap. We in the theater are watching, somewhat-interested, in a 'yeah that might be cool' kind of dollar show way.

Then they showed the title. And the movie trailer guy says, in his deepest, most serious-tone possible, the name of the movie: Blood And Chocolate.

The whole theater burst into laughter. I don't think I've laughed that hard since Snakes On A Plane, and the trailer showed no signs of this movie being a comedy. I went to IMDB.COM once I got home, and there are dozens upon dozens of stories of other theater-goers also laughing at the title. I've been told its based on a book, and its some kind of deep metaphor, but... damn! Blood And Chocolate? Sawdust And Mildew?

Anyway, Rocky Balboa is a good movie. It's definitely the best true movie in the series since the first one, as in, not cheesy in a good way.

No Survivor, though.
