A few weeks ago something hit me, The Sega Genesis was underated.
I had both a Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis yet it seems as though the Genesis has a softer spot in my heart. The only games I liked on the SNES were Nintendo releases. Honestly Sonic beat Mario during the 16 bit era, all we got was Mario All Stars and Super Mario World.
The NES pwns the Master System but I am beginning to think the gap between the NES and Genesis wasn't that big. The Genesis came out in 89 and was still pretty good for a system 2 years old when the SNES came out. If you look at the Genesis library, it is pretty big alas the NES.
I think the Genesis's legacy was somewhat ruined by the SegaCD and 32X

Um, you're kidding right? The Genesis was far and away the most popular system Sega ever made and it dominated the market in the early 90s. Nintendo eventually caught up to Sega, but their marketshare never really went past 50/50. The Sega/Nintendo 16-bit war was also the start of the whole "Nintendo is for kids" thing.

I really meant to say that the Genesis gets a worse rap nostalgia wise than the SNES

Ah, well that is true enough. That is largely due to how poorly Sega the system's later years, not to mention the design nightmare that was the Saturn.
I think another part of the problem is that the Genesis had a limited color palette, so a lot of its games don't look as nice as some of the SNES ones.

As much as I love the thing, the Genesis I think was actually overrated. It was an aggressive advertising campaign, Nintendo's lack of an answer for so long, and some very good exclusives (including Sonic) that put the system on top, not any merits of the system itself. Side by side, the SNES is clearly the better system, and games that appeared on both systems were nearly always better on the SNES.
And while neither company could have known it at the time, the Genesis's 3 buttons were a serious liability at a time when the video game king of the universe was Street Fighter II.

The Genesis did have a 6 button controller that became very popular, but it was never packaged with the system.
There are also people who will argue that a lot of games played better on the Genesis because it could process faster. EA Sports games in particular were considered way better on the Genesis.

The Genesis has a top-notch library that can go toe-to-toe with the SNES's. It wasn't just Mario vs. Sonic, it was also Metroid vs. Vectorman, Kirby vs. Ristar, F-Zero vs. Out Run, the list goes on. They had great marketing campaigns, but they ended up falling flat on their face for making the failure that is called the 32x, and launching the Saturn via "Oh it's out now, better go and get it while you still can!". The Dreamcast could've been amazing, but the PS2's hype and aggresive advertising ended up doing in the system and stealing the third-parties.
Overall, I say that I miss Sega, but their mistakes caused them to be reduced to a third-party developer. At the same time I wish Nintendo would turn into a third-party developer, but they have no reason to right now due to being able to print money with the Wii and the DS and finally have Sony be at the bottom of both the console and portable gaming race.

If they had started shipping those controllers with the new systems and offered the peripheral for a cheaper fee (for older systems) I think the system would have aged a lot better.

Aladdin is much better on Genesis than on SNES.

The Genesis had the better Contra, Animaniacs, and Beavis & Butt-Head games too. Contra's arguable of course, because people have different tastes and whatnot.

I preferred the SNES for RPGs, and the Genesis for everything else. I even preferred Castlevania: Bloodlines over both Super Castlevania IV and Dracula X.
Is the Genesis underrated? Maybe a little bit these days, but certainly not when it was new.

As much as I love the Sega Genesis, (and I really love the Sega Genesis) I can't say that it's underrated. Sure, it may not have had Final Fantasy III or Chrono Trigger, but it had a lot of original, and awesome, titles that kept it alive, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage.
Now, if you had said that the Sega Saturn was underrated, that would be a lot more accurate.

Not that I knew of, Syd. I thought the start of that bullshit claim was Yoshi's Story, which I love really much.

Nostalgia-wise it's definitely underrated. It was the best 16 bit system, and it was the perfect system for sports games, which was what I mainly used it for. EA's NHL & Madden games, and Mutant League Hockey got the biggest play from me, along with the Road Rash games.

It goes at least as far back as to the release of Mortal Kombat and probably started a long time before that.

I need to play more Genesis games, I have one and have a couple good games but the library just doesn't seem as good imo. That being said, I may have some bias as 16 bit games are a bit dated and simple so while I can really get into an SNES game due to nostalgia and always having wanted to own one as a kid, I can't say the same for Genesis. I enjoy it but it's missing the nostalgia factor for me.

I love playing me some Road Rash 3, ToeJam & Earl, Sonic 1-3, and Rampart on the Genesis every once in awhile.
On SNES. I play FF4 & 6, Chrono Trigger, and Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons.
I think they both hold equal sway in my nostalga.

I just want to make it clear I love Genesis and would probably take one over a SNES given the choice.

"Blast processing" was a lie. There was absolutely no truth behind it. Just a marketing gimmick.

Exactly. So every game made after that either sucked with 3 buttons (Eternal Champions), had pointless extra uses for the 3 buttons (Comix Zone), or just didn't use then at all.

Huh? Those three comparisons don't even come close. You're comparing two very different games in each case, unless you classify them very generically.

I completely disagree. They're also different games made by different companies in different styles, so you can't really compare them head to head. Sega's did look better, though.
As far as games, it was really Sega's first-party stuff, and EA's great effort (EA had a great relationship with Sega), that kept them going so well. Sega's exclusives were not all awesome games, but they were all interesting and pretty cool at the very least.
And shame on all of you for not saying Shining Force.

Dynamite Heddy and Gunstar Heroes FTW!
And blast processing, marketing gimmick or not, was not a lie. Sonic ran much faster than the SNES could realistically handle. That's why we got Uniracers. Nintendo wanted a fast game, and the only way to do it was to nerf the graphics.

I remember speaking to a Sega customer service rep once and he said there was no special "blast processing" ability.
The ability of Sonic's camera to keep up with Sonic was something I thought was a function of the game, not the system itself (the Sonic games use more than one trick to give the illusion of speed). And don't forget that Sonic itself was pretty simple graphically, at least Sonic 1 was (note how when they prettied it up in the sequels, the games seemed noticeably slower)

I'm just talking metaphorically, like both developers had an answer to the other's games. I'm mostly talking genre-wise, though Vectorman can also be said to be an answer to Donkey Kong Country, due to the graphics.

I have to agree. While Super Castlevania IV is awesome, it's basically Castlevania 1.5, and Dracula X is slow as molasses. Castlevania: Bloodlines has better controls, better level layouts, better music, and is just... better...across the board.
I dunno, I have both a Genesis and an SNES, and SNES has a clearly superior library, IMO. These are the only games I can recommend for Genesis (and to be honest, I never really got into the Sonic games):
Streets of Rage 2&3
Beyond Oasis
Splatterhouse 3
Ecco
Castlevania: Bloodlines
Shinobi 3
Phantasy Star 2, 3 & 4
Shining Force 1 & 2
Clue
Shadowrun
Gunstar Heroes
Light Crusader
Comix Zone
Wanderers from Ys III (and the SNES version is superior)
Street Fighter (in all of its incarnations)
Gauntlet 4
The first Mortal Kombat
Hard Drivin' (for laughs)
...anyone feel like pointing out what's missing from my list?

I don't think it was underrated, it did very well comercially. A lot of the exclusive Genesis games were amazing but multi-platform games all looked better on the SNES, except for Aladdin but that was because each Aladdin game was developed by different companies and were not ports.

What about Dynamite Headdy? I know it's hard as hell, but it's pretty fun.
And while this may be a bit of a stretch, I also really liked Wonder Boy in Monster World. I think it's a pretty great adventure. The only downside (aside from the damn, dirty final boss) is the horrible replay value.

I'll have to check out Dynamite Headdy...
Now that I think about it, that's definitely a long enough list to warrant a purchase of the Genesis, but I just felt like pointing it out because a list of worthy SNES titles would be much, much longer.
EDIT: I forgot one game: Cadash. It's pretty simplistic, but pretty fun.
