So, my school decides to have special classes for earth day, which was apparently today. These included watching a video on recycling from 1988, (It was narrated by a cowboy, cause I live in Colorado. Funny.) getting a presentation from some environmental group who forced us to write letters to a guy in Argentina who wants to build a dam, getting a presentation from a pair of 80-year old biologists, and, strangly, getting a presentation from a parapalegic skier. Oh, but we got to play dodgeball for the first time ever, so it wasn't all boring as hell.
But anyways, I was wondering about earth day. Do you observe it, or know about, or do anything special? It's apparently a very big deal in my town. I really don't give a flying fuck about it, but everyone else around me seems to. Any thoughts?

Did you even read anything he wrote? Or did you just stop reading after the second sentence?
Earth Day is pretty much exactly how it sounds. A day devoted to appreciate the Earth. Not many people celebrate it other than simple picking up of trash or doing generally environmentally safe activities. Obviously your school has it right by playing dodgeball in order to better our planet.

why 1988 ruled, I have totally rerailed this topic, be careful in the words you use on this forum or they might invoke a memory of nostalgia!!!!

Your school apparently doesn't care as much about Earth Day as they seem to think they do... Earth Day was yesterday, April 22nd, not today.

I have bad memories of Earth Day from working in Balboa Park. Whole place was shut down, no parking or driving, and legions of people descended on the place protesting everything from the rape of the environment to abortion. God I hated Earth Day.
But in principle, I like the idea, just never really celebrated it.

As horrible as it may sound, I don't particularly care about Earth Day, I didn't start the problem and I alone won't solve it and I'll likely be dead before pollution and garbage really noticeably negatively affect the world so I'm not too concerned.
Yes it's a selfish way too look at it, but I don't claim to be better than that.

Well, the thing that really pissed me off about the whole day was the environmental group forcing me to write the guy that wants to build dams in Argentina. If he has the fucking money and government's permission, I don't see why he shouldn't build the damn dam. The group which presented to us told us we should suggest "more reasonable ways to get power, like geothemal energy." The problem with that is that we live in the real world, and geothemal power plants are fucking expensive. Also, the principal caught a kid putting a plastic bottle in the trash instead of the recycling bin, and he got bitched at for 10 minutes.

I agree they shouldn't have forced you. Way to not say "FUCK YOU! YOU ARE ALL TERRORISTS" to the group. They held you hostage to use you to further their goals. Terrorism. And you let them win. *spits on the ground*

If the school forced you to write a letter for a cause without allowing you to hear both sides of the argument then that is truly ridiculous. If they gave you the opportunity to examine both sides of the argument and then forced you to act against your informed decision then that is even worse. Were you even given a say in the matter or given the choice of an alternate assignment if you opted not to write the letter?

Well, I got not say in the matter, and as far as I know, no alternates were given. I ended up being pulled out before they gave me some paper and a pen and said "WRITE!" cause I had to deal with something down in the office, so I didn't have to write the supposed Worst People on Earthâ„¢. My friends who did have to write told me they were forced to.

I would've just sat in class and had my arms behind my back the whole period.

Nobody actually read the letters at the school, so one of my friends decided to tell the CEO that he was doing a good job and should keep it up.
