...then could Predator have inspired StarTropics?
Here's my case:
- Both have first installments that start with the hero being dropped off in a helicopter.
- Both feature a deadly alien who turns out to be, of course, one ugly motherfucker.
- Both have only two installments to their name (not including the two crossover movies with the former's sibling franchise).
- Both have first installments that take place in sparsely civilized tropical cimates and second installments that take place in significantly more civilized locales (sort of).
Well?

Did you check release dates first to make sure you're not just an idiot? Because that would be embarassing.

You aren't particularly missing anything with Startropics.
However, if you haven't played the sequel, Zoda's Revenge...then yes, you are definitely missing out.

Yeah, I have to agree. I didn't like Zoda's Revenge nearly as much as the original Star Tropics.

Just to remind everyone, I posted this thread to discuss the possibility that, like Alien with Metroid, Predator may have inspired StarTropics.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude but I just don't see it. The only strong connection for them that I see is that the ultimate enemy is an alien, which could really fit many movies and games. The other comparisons you mentioned are just not strong enough to hold much water. The Metroid and Alien comparison is much stronger in my opinion, especially if Metroid 2 and Aliens are compared as well.

I dunno, I guess it was because I got Zoda's Revenge before I beat Star Tropics, but I HATED Star Tropics' controls and the way the main character couldn' t move diagonally. I always thought Zoda was better because it had really neat weapons, an infinitely better soundtrack, better controls, and the time-travelling aspect was cool.
