Since I'm suffering from insomnia I figured I'd best do something to help pass the time. I just noticed that my subscription to Norton ends in a few hours and that got my wondering about a good replacement. One of the main draws of this forum is the overall respect and intelligence that people exhibit here. Since I'm not really in-touch with the computer world, and since I value everyone's opinion I would like to hear what you all prefer. I'd really like to find a free antivirus program, however if that's not possible I'd appreciate any recommendations for good subscription antivirus software.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds good. I will look into it. As long as it keeps the viruses and adware away, I'll be happy. If I have to get two separate programs to do that, I will.

I second Opti's recommendations. I also recommend Spybot: Search & Destroy.

I have Spybot, however Norton has detected a few viruses that Spybot neglected to catch in time. Then again maybe it's because I'm running them simultaneously.

Because I have access to paid antivirus without cost to myself, I tend not to look at the free stuff often.
Still people ask for recommendations all the time.
AVG Free is always a "GOOD" option. But I keep hearing about a new product that a lot of people think is
A. Easier
B. Faster
C. Less Cumbersome

I have never used it myself, but I plan to give it a shot soon just to see what the chatter is about.

Recommendations are always welcome. I appreciate the help everyone. I think I will look into both AVG and the link you sent me GP.

I already have spybot. So I guess I'll try Avast! as well. They all seem like good choices, however I'm not really up-to-date with these things.

I'll also recommend AVG. It sometimes crashes Firefox, but meh.

Ad-Aware is also a good anti-spyware program.

Users of Firefox/Chrome/Safari really have no need for Spybot/Adaware if they:
1. Run Windows Defender
2. Aren't doing stupid things constantly on the web
3. Have antivirus
4. Keep their system updated.

I sometimes use Firefox, I suppose I should check my updates more often.

I used Avast! for awhile but I didn't like it. Now I use COMODO and that's worked out pretty well.

I always felt like Avast! had a great product that was too fucking awkward. Also they make you jump through hoops to get the free copy.

So many choices. I am going to have to thoroughly examine all of the possibilities before I make a decision.
