I have never in my life watched any anime, none, nada, zilch. Recently my wife forced me to sit down and watch Death Note. Ok, so now I am a little hooked. I watched the series and thought it was amazing. So my question is what is the next series I should check out. I've heard Bleach was good but I'm looking for some good suggestions. Thanks all.

Depends on what you want. Bleach is an action oriented anime, which is incredibly different from Death Note. Ghost in Shell is good, if a little confusing, and Cowboy Bebop is the shit. I have heard good things about a lesser known anime, Darker Than Black, but I still need to watch it. If you are into some weird ass comedy, FLCL (Furi Kuri), Hare+Guu (Jungle Wa Itsumo Hare Nochi Guu), and Gintama are all good.

Funny you bring up Death Note, it seems they're going to be doing a new series focusing on L's upbringing or something like that.
If you're not interested in downloading torrents, Bleach is about to get out of a 50 +/- filler arc on Cartoon Network. It's a good shonen anime, especially if you liked stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho or Shaman King.
Lucky Star is awesome, but it's a different genre than the aformentioned Cowboy Bebop.
I'm trying to think of any cerebral anime/OVA like DeathNote, there's:
Hell Girl (Jigouku Shoujo)
Monster
Le Portrait de Petite Cossette

You should start at the beginning with the classics and work up to modern series.
Go rent Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Fist of The North Star, Vampire Hunter D, Project A-Ko, Spirited Away, Princess Monoake, and such. Then find which style and genre you like, and come back. Then we can suggest to suit your tastes. My personal favorite:
Ranma 1/2 (Humor)
FLCL (Humor)
Ghost In The Shell 1 + 2 + Stand Alone Complex (Serious Drama)
Riding Bean (Humor)

I'm the same boat as Knyte, try the older stuff first. Also, I wouldn't recommend watching DBZ until the Kai version finally hits the U.S.

I'm not a huge anime fan, but Ranma 1/2 makes me lmao every time.

FLCL is great on the count that you have no idea what the fuck is going on, but it's just so awesome to watch.
I personally like the psychological Anime's more then the brunt action ones:
Paranoia Agent
Death Note
Big O (which isn't that bad of a giant robot anime)
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Case Closed
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Then there is the Anime which I call the insane macho shows, that I enjoy:
Cowboy Beebop
TriGun
Gundam Wing
008th MS team
G-Gundam
Yu Yu Hakusho
Tokko
Legend of Black Heaven
I also seem to enjoy the comedy/Romance ones even before people started liking
them:
The Tenchi Muyo Series
El-Hazaard
Fushigi Yugi
Slayers
Then there are the Mindfucks... ones that I enjoy but fuck with your head, either with Comedy or with insanity:
Fool Cooly/FLCL
Milk Chan
Shin Chan
I'd advise you to stay away from some of the more mainstream ones like Bleach or Dragonball Z. They tend to give the false image of everything in Anime is pure fighting. Inuyasha is the same, but I don't know anybody that still bothers with that show...

I know exactly what's going on in FLCL, it's a giant metaphor for that awkward and hilarious time in a young boy's life known as puberty.

Was Paranoia Agent the one with the kid who went around assaulting people with a baseball bat because he thought he was in a game?
Anyways, I'd recommend any Hayao Miyazaki movies, Hellsing, Evangelion, Dragonball, Gundam, Gundam Wing, Big O, Tenchi Muyo, and Kikaider. Oh yeah, Metropolis by Osamu Tezuka is really good too.

I am sure I have talked about this before, but if you do choose to watch this, make sure you are getting the OVAs, which are pretty damn good. The regular anime is basically a bunch of painfully bad filler, and is an insult* to the manga. Why would you create an annoying purple nudist vampire when you had an army of nazi vampires and the most badass werewolf ever?
If you can, pick up the manga, as it is probably my favorite manga of all time.
*I am really only refering to the story here. The vocie acting is standard anime fair, and the art, while still better in the manga, is still quite good. Also, the music is some of the best I have heard in an anime... ever.

I really only saw a little bit of Hellsing. Someone lent me the first disc in the season or something. That's usually how I get my anime since I'm so poor. In fact, I just got Elfen Lied.

Everyone seems to be forgetting Outlaw Star. Every other Anime in the Toonami line-up was mentioned save for that one.

It is mostly me being very, very bitter, as I really like the manga, and the plot changes are just too big for me to ignore.

I was tempted to mention it but Bebop and Trigun are the superior space westerns IMO.
P.S. No one mentioned Ronin Warriors either.

Superior, maybe. Nearly as fun? Never.
Besides, Outlaw Star had Aisha, the hottest cat girl I know aside from Felicia. I liked Bebop well enough, however it's too depressing to watch that often. Outlaw Star on the other-hand is alot more accessible and has a better sense of humour. Besides, who doesn't like a hero who cheats a little to win? Gene may not be that deep, but he fights without any sort of gimmick aside from his Caster.
Oh well, to each their own.
Ronin Warriors! The Powers in the armoooorr! DAAAAAI CHIIIIIII!
God that theme-song was corny. I used to have most of the figures. My favorite character was either Sage or Reformed Anubis.

I forgot to mention it until now, but I also recommend Code Geass: Lelouch of the Revolution. Lelouch is as much a manipulative bastard as Light (what with being able to perform a gaze attack that causes compliance even to the point of performing suicide should he tell you to do it), although the 2nd season (R2) has a good bit of ass-pulling going on.

I stopped watching after I missed a few episodes in R2. Did they ever finish the series?
Lelouch is alot like Light in the control aspect, however he seems to have more remorse about some of his actions. Then again stuff like that is always up for debate. I think I will refraind and add another good anime to the list
S-CRY-ed is pretty good. It's alot more fighting-oriented than some of the anime on the list, but I still found it fun to watch.

Actually yes, they did end the series but it's open-ended enough there could be a spin off.

I won't ask for spoilers, however that does seem kind of odd. I always assumed a series like that would have a pretty cut-and-dry ending.

I also have heard nice things about the anime version of Samurai 7, although I alsop need to watch it. I imagine it will be good, even if one of the guys is a 10ft tall robot.
Also, if you want balls too the wall action with little rhyme or reason, there is always Fist of the North Star
That is right, he punches a guy so hard he explodes like someone stuck a grenade in him. Seriously, this anime is so insane it manages to circle through stupid and come back around to sheer awesome. Also, it inspired the creation of the shooting star press, if you follow wrestling. |
I've always wanted to see Fist of the North Star, but I never got around to it. Now I'm sold. How many episodes are their in the series? I have to buy this.

I believe it is a total of 152, but it is separated into two parts for some reason. The first is 109, but then there were a second set of 43 that started airing under two weeks after the original was done. Plus they made some new ones in 2008, but I think that didn't go over nearly as well
