So I have determined that I care about people (or more accurately, care what people think about me) too fucking much. Caring like that is usually not a bad thing, but I feel like I take it to an extreme. I present the event that set off this train of thought today as an example:
In my ROTC (i.e. Officer's Training) program, we hold Physical Training four times a week, technically. If you don't have a perfect PT test score, you have to go an additional 5th day (Wednesdays.) Obviously, PT is huge in the Army and missing a session without a seriously good excuse is a big no-no. Which is not usually a problem for me; I almost never miss class/PT/any event, and am never late.
Last night, one of my CO's calls me and says he's got a doctor's appointment to go to, and he needs me to stand in for him at a leadership meeting that conflicts with Wends. PT. Since I'm his second in command of course I say yes. Technically I could have designated someone to go in my place (like he did), but since this was a particularly important meeting, I felt that one of us needed to be there in person. So I send the officer in charge of PT an email letting him know what was up. Never heard back from him.
Fast forward to this morning. About halfway through the meeting the PT Officer comes in (having finished PT with the others) and pulls me out of the meeting and demands to know why I missed PT. In spite of the fact that he obviously knew where I was since he came to get me out of the frigging meeting. So I tell him I was tasked to go to this meeting and had to cover for my CO. He gives me a dirty look and tells me that's not an excuse. He goes off in a huff, and I go back to my meeting. I tried to apologize later, but he wouldn't hear it. I'm waiting to get reamed out and/or punished later this week by him, or when he tells my Sergeant in Charge I wasn't at PT.
Now intellectually, I know that this is not really a fair situation, and wasn't really my fault. I mean, I did the best I could with the circumstances I was given, made a judgment call (important platoon briefing meeting > one day of PT), and he acted like I had fucking caused babies to die. And I'm gonna catch hell for it, because whatever version of events he tells will go. This does not seem fair to me. BUT, and here's the whole reason I started the topic in the first place, I FEEL BAD ABOUT DISAPPOINTING HIM. The guy is an asshole, I SHOULD just take whatever punishment he gives out and move on. But no, I feel genuinely crappy that I didn't psychically read his mind when he didn't tell me to come to PT instead of the meeting, and I also feel bad that some of the people over me are going to hear that I'm a flake (despite the fact that I'm not.) How the hell do I stop giving a shit about this guy, and stop wasting emotional energy on the fact that he's upset with me...??? GAHHHHHHHHHHH!
/whiny rant (although for what its worth, it did make me feel a bit better to write it down.)

Hawk... my previous post was designed to anger you a bit. You should be pissed off because you were just treated poorly for no reason.
I don't actually wish to throw meanness your way.

Military hierarchies are a bitch.
I get the same way with my superiors at work when something occasionally goes wrong. If I know it wasn't my fault, I eventually shake it off. That's the best you can do. You can't control everything, and your bosses misinterpreting how an assignment was done or how conflicting duties are being addressed are both examples of this; it's best not to let stuff you can't control upset you too much. All you have control over is your performance, so doing a good job in general should help smooth over any bumps in the road you come across.

I think when you are doing something that you take pride in it's always going to sting when you receive any sort of negative criticism. Some people can hide the fact that it bothers them better than others (and come off as having a "fuck you" attitude), but that doesn't mean they don't feel it to some degree. I myself am very good at hiding my emotions and can come off as if nothing in the world bothers me. That, however, is just a mask. I am as human as the next person, and if one of my supervisors criticizes my work than it will bother me just like anybody else. I think the best way to deal with it is exactly what you are doing here, and that is just vent to somebody that is willing to listen. That always seems to help me no matter what the circumstance. I don't think trying to change your personality or who you are is the answer though.
I think that covering for someone superior to you is a hella good excuse
Just set your mind on he is wrong and what i did was what i was supposed to do

Who holds higher rank? Your CO, or your PT Trainer?
I think I would treat the Army like I do my job. (Lot's of Corperate BS, so their kinda the same) Always go with the highest ranking person who gave you the order, that way you're safe 99% of the time.
Also, if your boss is your enemy, then your boss's boss should be your best friend.

Hawk this is what I do when I have to get ready for a rugby match and develop the Fuck you attitude...
I take a minute and clear my head
I then breath in and think of a bad thing that's happened in my life, nothing sad but something that's pissed me off
I then try to supress anything boiling up in my gut and let the ball of ice form in my stomach.
If I'm not pissed off at that point, I usually ask on of the guys to either punch me in the stomach or in the face, depending on their preference.
Then I just let it all go balls to the wall...
Also, a really good thing to do is look eye to eye with the person you are pissed at so, like when I'm in a scrum I'll give a little smile, but I'll have the stone cold face and the darkest eyes (I've been told that I look like I'm about to murder someone) If their eyes falter, use that as their weekness and then go from there... often times' they'll be caught off gaurd and want to get out of there as soon as possible.

Upon reading the thread title, I thought this was going to be a thread about standing up for yourself, or generally being more "alpha."
But this just sounds like a shitty situation. I think your only logical choice here is to take solace in the fact that you knew you were right. You did the right thing. He's wrong, whether he realizes it or not.

Start listening to some punk, that shit will piss you off and make you stop caring. I started hating cops after listening to lots of Black Flag and reading Get in the Van by Henry Rollins. Cops have never really done anything to me, but I just hate them now.

Imagine a scenario where your impeccable work ethic has risen you through the ranks so that you now outrank the asshole. You know you could exact vengeance, and he knows it too, but he's not good enough for or worth your vengeance.

You were right, but he's being uppity just because he can.
I don't exactly have the best 'fuck you' attitude, but I've been working on it as well. Best thing you can do is just repeat 'I'm right, fuck that ass hole' over and over in your head.
That and listen to some death metal while shooting peoples faces in an FPS

I would assume that no matter how legitimate the excuse, your officer will chew you to make you feel like shit. I thought that's what they did kind of as a way to harden you mentally for battle. So my advice to be able to shrug things off and develop a fuck you attitude is to stay in the military.

Just to educate you, if you have dealt with an asshole cop they are the minority. When you have one cop that writes a hundred tickets a month and one that writes none there is only one that the general population is seeing. When I was a cop I wrote about eight tickets a month, and in fact I got punished many times for not writing enough. That isn't to say that I was lazy or didn't do my job. I wrote a shitload of warnings, but I wasn't a hypocrite. Most of my coworkers were not different from me. I would bet that you have probably bullshitted with cops at a bar, club, or other social setting before and never knew that they were cops. If you are an average American you are never going to see any of those cops pulling you over unless you are too fucked up to drive or you are a complete asshole. If I caught you committing a crime, than guess what, you are going to jail. If not than I was just as average as anybody else you see on the streets. Your mentality is what a lot of the population has, and that is the reason I decided to change the direction of my life and quit the police force. I saw more than one of my fellow officers killed on duty, and that is the only time most people seemed to even give a shit. I got tired of dealing with being the bad guy all of the time.
Rotfl on some of the responses, guys, and thanks for the serious advice, too. I love each and every one of you.
And QFT on the cop thing. Police are, by and large, very good people. Yes there are assholes, but there are assholes everywhere. Rwespect their authori-tay, and respect their service.

Usually when I'm put into a situation like this, I just try to put up with it and think to myself that I did the best I could. Normally, in any other situation, I'd feel bad because I couldn't satisfy anyone, but when it's just kind of impossible like in your case, I wouldn't let it get to me.

I always figured cops seemed short tempered because they get to deal with stupid bullshit all day long. I try to be nice and to the point when I have to talk to the police because I'm sure whichever cop I'm talking to has had to deal with crack heads gang members drunk drivers fighting spouses panhandlers prostitutes pimps and all out peckerheads before he crossed paths with me, and probably isn't in the mood for anymore bullshit.

If you need to develop a "fuck you" attitude, try listening to a lot of Rage Against The Machine.
FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!
FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!
FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!
FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!
FUCK YOU, I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!
Unfortunately, this isn't the best attitude to have if you're in the Army. Also, Rage is kinda terrible.
