Metroid Zero Mission on the GBA
For one, It's the better game, but it also comes with the NES Metroid.

The first Metroid for NES kicks my ass all over the place. No map so you gotta take notes on paper or have an excellent sense of direction or a photographic memory, both of which I lack severely.
Also not having the ability to shoot while crouching to nail the smaller enemies always fucks me over. I think you can jump over them and shoot down at them, but there's usually a bunch of other fucking flying things all over the place that get in the way. I really suck at controlling Samus.

Get Metroid from the GBA NES Classic series. You gotta play the classic game, but why not play it with the original FDS save feature instead of passwords?

Zero Mission, pretty much for reasons already stated. It's my favorite Metroid ever, as well.

Here here... I can get the wrench to put them on, but after that you guys are on your own...
The original and Metroid 2 didn't have maps, but the original is much harder since it's not as linear as 2... Though I do love Two more then 1

That's irrelevant, Ba'al. When someone hasn't played either, you always recommend the original. Always.

i would say just get both. they're both like $5 or $10 each. so its not like it would set you back a lot
but if you must make me choose, get the portable one, since you can play it anywhere

I'm no pro at videogames, and Metroidvanias confuse the hell out of me in general thanks to the game throwing you to the dogs in the beginning with not even a vague clue where to go, having the most obscure solutions to get from one place to other, etc. It's why the only Metroid games I've beaten is Fusion and Zero Mission.

If I didn't already own it, I'd buy the cart. It's the only way to play.

That's why I LOVE these games! On top of the fact that I have a photographic memory, a good sense of direction, and I love to make my own maps... most of which I developed playing these games as a kid. The challenge is excellent for growth, and if it's not there at all, it makes playing games for of a waste of time. I mean, I play games I've crushed before and still do, but I like to play new stuff that's challenging in terms of actual skills, not grinding or just sheer difficulty of the game itself.

Brutal, Super Metroid (though not up for debate in this thread) is definitely the best in the series.

Metroid sucks balls. Pun intended? Maybe. I'd rather do a fun-run at a nickel a lap.

So you're saying you can beat the original Metroid without the help of a map, online strategy tips excluded?

Ahhh, the NES classic series is a waste of money. Buy original, dammit.
Besides, if you like Metroid enough to consider the first, remember that you have basically four ways to play it:
-The original NES
- Virtual Console
-Unlockable on Metroid Zero Mission (I think)\
-Also unlockable in Metroid Prime... I think...

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

This.
Play the original. Learn your way with a map. You'll know the world A LOT better if you have to find your way yourself.
