And rather than just posting links, a brief accompanying excerpt from the article is strongly encouraged.

Cool. Criticism is greatly appreciated. I'll do that from here on out. I never did it before mostly out of sheer laziness, but I agree it makes more sense to just quote the story instead of pasting the links.
Incidentally, what did you guys vote for? the chicken or the egg?

Monster attack steals user data
US job website Monster.com has suffered an online attack with the personal data of hundreds of thousands of users stolen, says a security firm.
A computer program was used to access the employers' section of website using stolen log-in credentials.
Symantec said the log-ins were used to harvest user names, e-mail addresses, home addresses and phone numbers, which were uploaded to a remote web server.
The stolen data could be used to send phishing and spam e-mails.
"This remote server held over 1.6 million entries with personal information belonging to several hundred thousands candidates, mainly based in the US, who had posted their resumes to the Monster.com website," reported Symantec. |
Well, this is crap. Especially since I had my resume on Monster.com.

"Groups Rally For and Against Planned Arabic-Themed Public School in Brooklyn
Academy Prompts Strong Polarized Response

Crowds gathered outside the Department of Education to support and protest the planned Khalil Gibran school.
Groups Rally For, Against Planned Arabic-Themed Public School
By MyFoxNY.com
NEW YORK -- A planned Arabic-themed public school in Brooklyn has prompted polarized reactions. Critics warned Monday that students could be "indoctrinated" with radical Islamic beliefs and supporters called such statements "racist."
The Khalil Gibran International Academy has generated controversy almost from the start (watch report: Arabic Studies School Expected to Open in Brooklyn). Supporters rallied Monday in favor of the school, gathering in front of the city's Department of Education. Officials there have said they plan to open the academy on schedule on Sept. 4 despite statements by its vocal critics equating it with a madrassa, an Islamic religious school, and portraying it as a potential radical training ground.
The school is named for Khalil Gibran, the Lebanese-American Christian poet.
The school first principal resigned after criticism over her affiliation with a group that sells t-shirts with the word "intifada" on them. Debbie Almontaser called it quits after she failed to condemn the use of the highly charged word, an Arabic term for the Palestinian uprising against Israel. The DOE appointed an interim replacement, Danielle Salzburg, on August 13. Her appointment has drawn its own controversy because she is Jewish and doesn't speak Arabic. "

While I'm all for Americans learning more languages and cultures, this whole thing seems troubling because of it's similarity to schools in Europe that have isolated the Muslim community further, preventing assimilation, and allowing anti-Western ideologies to grow. Plus the original principal supporting intifada isn't comforting either....

Public schools are best. They expose everyone involved to new ideas and ways of life. Private schools tend to isolate and assist in producing individuals unable to deal with the broad nature of American culture.

PARTS OF the Internet in the northern US were slowed the other day due to apparent sabotage.
Telia Sonera experienced a network outage between Montville and Cleveland, Ohio starting about 10 pm EDT Sunday night. When technicians located the cable break, they found it appeared to have sustained damage from gunfire. Lots of gunfire, because the cable damage extended over more than half a mile (1.1 km).
A TeliaSonera spokesman said, "Somebody had been shooting with a gun or a shotgun into the cable."
The link is reportedly owned by Internet service provider Level 3 Communications, which was unavailable for comment. On Monday, Cogent Communications warned its customers of outages in a network status note on its website, which read "Splice crews are currently doing preparation work on the new fiber cable before splicing begins to resolve the outage."
The outage reportedly caused significant network latency across wide areas of the US.

Al Gore invented the internet to withstand both nuclear attack and assaults from gigantic cockroaches in the ensuing nuclear winter.
Turns out it stops pre-nuke winter cockroaches as well. Good show.

New recall of Chinese toys in US
Two more US firms have recalled Chinese-made toys, saying they include paint with dangerous levels of lead.
The items include SpongeBob SquarePants spiral address books and diaries, Thomas the Tank Engine spinning tops and some toy buckets sold in the US.
The recall of about 300,000 toys comes a week after US firm Mattel recalled 18.5 million toys.
That prompted a US senator to called for all toys imported into the country from China to be inspected.
Ohio toy firm Martin Designs and Schyllings Associates of Massachusetts issued the recall through the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
About 250,000 of the books were sold between June 2006 and July 2007, while the spinning tops and buckets were in shops between 2001 and 2002.
Parents are being told to take the items away from children. |
The chinese are definitely trying to kill us now. Full story:

Man dies in Viagra-fuelled orgy
in a nutshell (pun not intended) a 28 year old man won a $6,000.00 bet, after having sex with two women for 12 hours, then he died of a heart attack. Not a bad last note to go out on...
and, after giving this article some consideration, I would not mind going out this way. |

Fox admits to planting political brainwashing in popular T.V. shows
Rupert Murdoch’s Twentieth Century Fox corporation has admitted to planting political brainwashing within its globally popular TV shows and indeed boasts that it is proud of the fact.
A corporate video currently being showcased on another part of Murdoch’s media empire, MySpace.com, shows Fox executives and stars of its universally recognized shows bragging about how they use the platform of hit shows that are broadcast globally to implant messages about the supposed threat of global warming. |

NASA Planet Hunter rockets into space
" NASA's planet-hunting telescope, Kepler, rocketed into space Friday night on a historic voyage to track down other Earths in a faraway patch of the Milky Way galaxy.
It's the first mission capable of answering the age-old question: Are other worlds like ours out there?
Kepler, named after the German 17th century astrophysicist, set off on its unprecedented mission at 10:49 p.m., thundering into a clear sky embellished by a waxing moon.
"It was just magnificent. It looked like a star was being formed in the sky," said Bill Borucki, Kepler's principal scientist. "Everybody was delighted, everybody was screaming, 'Go Kepler!'"
Kepler's mission will last at least 3 1/2 years and cost $600 million.
The goal is to find, if they exist, Earth-like planets circling stars in the so-called habitable zone — orbits where liquid water could be present on the surface of the planets. That would mean there are lots of places out there for life to evolve, Borucki said.
On the other hand, "if we don't find any, it really means Earths are very rare, we might be the only extant life and, in fact, that will be the end of 'Star Trek.' " |

Sheriff sues Craigslist for sex ads
"Cook County’s sheriff filed a federal lawsuit against Craigslist on Thursday, saying the popular online classifieds site promotes and facilitates prostitution on a massive scale. Sheriff Tom Dart wants Craigslist to eliminate its “erotic services” section, suggesting that many of the section’s ads are blatant solicitations for prostitution.
“Missing children, runaways, abused women and women trafficked in from foreign countries are routinely forced to have sex with strangers because they’re being pimped on Craigslist,“ Dart said. In a news release, Dart cited ads such as “Teens for cash ... $100 quickie” and “Are you looking to make some good money in this tough economy. Minimum pay is $25 per hour ... performing duties specified in Naughty Nannies handbook.“
Susan Best, a spokeswoman for San Francisco-based Craigslist, said the company cooperates with law enforcement and works diligently to prevent illegal use of the site. She said the company has taken such measures as placing prominent notices banning illegal activity and removing inappropriate ads. “Any misuse of the site is not tolerated by Craigslist,“ Best said." |

The problem with this is that the news stories are too big to put in one thread. How are we going to discuss?

i agree, except, like i said, i was bored and didnt feel like doing several different threads on each and every story. if one was popular enough, then we can make a separate one if necessary, but if they are not, then its probably best to keep them confined to one thread so people at least read about them and not clutter the boards.

Paraplegic Man Suffers Spider Bite, Walks Again
MANTECA, Calif.
He has been confined to a wheelchair for 20 years. Now a paraplegic man is walking again, and his doctors call it a miracle. CBS13 went to Manteca to find out how a spider bite helped get him back on his feet.
"I closed my eyes and then I was spinning like a flying saucer," explains David Blancarte.
A motorcycle accident almost killed David 21 years ago. At the time he might have wished he was dead.
"I asked my doctor, 'Sir what happened? I can't feel my legs'," said David.
Ever since, David's been relying on his wheelchair to get around. Then the spider bite. A Brown Recluse sent him to the hospital, then to rehab for eight months.
"I'm here for a spider bite. I didn't know I would end up walking," says David.
A nurse noticed David's leg spasm and ran a test on him.
"When they zapped my legs, I felt the current, I was like 'whoa' and I yelled," he says.
He felt the current and the rush of a renewed sense of hope.
"She says,'your nerves are alive. They're just asleep'," explained David.
Five days later David was walking.
"I was walking on the bar back and forth," he said.
Now David is out of the hospital and on his feet and walking. |

"Vampire" unearthed in Venice plague grave
Italian researchers believe they have found the remains of a female "vampire" in Venice, buried with a brick jammed between her jaws to prevent her feeding on victims of a plague which swept the city in the 16th century.
Matteo Borrini, an anthropologist from the University of Florence, said the discovery on the small island of Lazzaretto Nuovo in the Venice lagoon supported the medieval belief that vampires were behind the spread of plagues like the Black Death.
"This is the first time that archaeology has succeeded in reconstructing the ritual of exorcism of a vampire," Borrini told Reuters by telephone. "This helps ... authenticate how the myth of vampires was born."
The skeleton was unearthed in a mass grave from the Venetian plague of 1576 -- in which the artist Titian died -- on Lazzaretto Nuovo, which lies around three km (2 miles) northeast of Venice and was used as a sanitorium for plague sufferers.
The succession of plagues which ravaged Europe between 1300 and 1700 fostered the belief in vampires, mainly because the decomposition of corpses was not well understood, Borrini said.
Gravediggers reopening mass graves would sometimes come across bodies bloated by gas, with hair still growing, and blood seeping from their mouths and believe them to be still alive.
The shrouds used to cover the faces of the dead were often decayed by bacteria in the mouth, revealing the corpse's teeth, and vampires became known as "shroud-eaters."
According to medieval medical and religious texts, the "undead" were believed to spread pestilence in order to suck the remaining life from corpses until they acquired the strength to return to the streets again.
"To kill the vampire you had to remove the shroud from its mouth, which was its food like the milk of a child, and put something uneatable in there," said Borrini. "It's possible that other corpses have been found with bricks in their mouths, but this is the first time the ritual has been recognized." |

Scientists find new bacteria species
Indian scientists have discovered three new species of bacteria in Earth's upper stratosphere that are resistant to ultraviolet radiation, researchers said.
The bacteria do not match any species found on Earth. They were found in samples that scientists collected when they sent a balloon into the stratosphere, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said in a statement Monday.
That layer of the Earth receives heavy doses of ultraviolet radiation, enough to kill most organisms.
In their analyses of the retrieved samples, microbiologists detected 12 bacterial and six fungal colonies.
Of them, three bacterial colonies were new species, the ISRO said.
Indian scientists named one of them Janibacter hoylei, after astrophysicist Fred Hoyle.
"While the present study does not conclusively establish the extraterrestrial origin of microorganisms, it does provide positive encouragement to continue the work in our quest to explore the origin of life," the ISRO said. |

Pub is closed by Monty Python grenade
Two buildings in Shoreditch were evacuated, the street cordoned off and a bomb squad called in after workers spotted a dangerous looking weapon on the premises. But the suspicious object was actually a replica of the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch from the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The owner of the nearby Windmill Pub said the whole situation today was as ridiculous as the film's scene.

Burger King Slammed For 'Whopper' Of Insult
An advertisement for Burger King's Texican Whopper burger that has run in Europe shows a small wrestler dressed in a cape resembling a Mexican flag. The wrestler teams up with a lanky American cowboy almost twice his height to illustrate the cross-border blend of flavors.
"The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican," a narrator's voice says.
The taller cowboy boosts the wrestler up to reach high shelves and helps clean tall windows, while the Mexican helps the cowboy open a jar.
Mexico's ambassador to Spain said Monday he has written a letter to Burger King's offices in that nation objecting to the ad and asking that it be removed. Jorge Zermeno told Radio Formula that the ads "improperly use the stereotyped image of a Mexican." |
