Has anyone played this? I'm considering buying it, IGN gave it a 9, reader average is only 8.1 and press average is 8.6 which less than lives up to RE 4.
Is this a game to buy or just rent? I was going to buy it today but wanted to look it up first, 67.99 is a HEFTY price tag for any game.

I thought the demo was very fun, its just different from what the franchise is known for. If you liked RE4 alot than you will really like this game. If you are more of a fan of the older gen RE games than this might not be right for you.
If you have never touched a RE game before than you will most definatley love this.

Meh. I didn't like Resident Evil 4 (or any of the previous RE games for that matter), so I don't think this one is for me either.
That's what the PS3 demo seems to think as well, since it refused to let me play, instead deciding to crash right after the first cutscene.

I got it yesterday from Gamefly. I am enjoying it so far. The partner system is pretty interesting.

I was really excited when I first heard about this. In fact I was pretty dead set on getting the collector's edition. Now I'm not really sure. I enjoyed RE4 but I don't really want the same game in a different environment. Is there enough new content to warrant such a huge purchase?

From what I hear, the game doesn't pause when you check your inventory. Now I understand why such a mechanic might exist in a 2-player Co-Op mode, I have to say "Fuck You" if you're going to force that same restriction to me on one player mode.

That sole feature really pisses me off, it saps out any suspense the game might have had left.

Maybe I'm just being thick here (or maybe its because I've never gotten into the RE series), but...wouldn't a real-tine inventory screen INCREASE tension? It's got to me more sweat-inducing to change guns/heal/whatever on the fly than it does when you have all the time in the world...? |
Enemies are up on your shit too quickly for there to be any really "suspense" or built up tension. Its more of a surprise based fear than it is the creeping style fear the other ones used to invoke. Of course there were certain circumstances where there were things that would suddenly pop out, like dogs jumping through windows. Yet those were few and far between.

Ok for someone who has been playing it since Friday, almost non stop. I really enjoy this game. The menu system has hot button. Namely the directions which let you choose weapons and healing items. You can set up your inventory before a chapter or during some down time. Money is extremely important and it would do you a great deal of good to build up your weapons. You can get multiple of the same weapons, play missions over whenever you want. You can basically stay dying the whole game as long as you help or get help from your partner.
If you enjoyed RE 4, RE 5 is fucking fantastic. The menu system is actually really nice. No longer do you have to sit there and rotate items to get them to fit. It groups similar items and like I said with the hot keys it definitly makes it a lot easier. I would definitely buy this game, there is a lot of extra/bonus stuff to unlock and plus you got online as well.
5 out of 5 from me.

What if you did not enjoy RE 4 because you felt that it strayed too far from what made you love the series in the first place?
I dunno, this is looking almost like a complete re-hash of RE 4, in a different skin. I'm seriously questioning whether or not I should shell out sixty bucks on it.

From what I heard, it's like RE4 in terms of gameplay. So if you liked the original formula better, I'd say you should give it a rent instead.

If you didn't enjoy RE 4 then yea you should probably rent it instead. But I throughly enjoyed RE 4 so RE 5 is like RE 4 only hotter.

I think this game has the same gameplay problem that Metal Gear Solid 4 had, in that it wants to do action, it just doesn't know how to incorporate itself into it well. I'm not talking about the shooting. It's a cool, semi-realistic system, and it adds to the tension. I'm talking mostly about movement and knife fighting. The movement is too stiff. If I were being chased by an invincible psycho with a chainsaw, I wouldn't lock my body in military safe mode with two hands pointing my gun in the air while making slow-ass pivot turns. I'd go into a free run, dodging and darting either which way. Also, the knife combat is way too stiff and unengaging. For a game that prides itself on ammo conservation, they don't give you too many other options.
Overall, I'm liking it so far. I didn't play RE4, and flat-out hated RE 1-3 (though I still played them for no other reason than that I got them all for free, so I'm kind of an idiot). It ranks above most action games in that it provides tension and co-op is done pretty well to the point where playing with another person is preferred and enhances the experience.
