19. Put out or get out.
If you do not post at least once within 48 hours of registering your account, it will be deleted. You may register it again if you so desire, but the same rule applies. If you cannot post because you are having trouble activating your account, please e-mail Syd.
This is mostly a housekeeping measure, but it is in direct response to the iffy circumstances surrounding a certain forum battle vote.
#EDIT: This rule has been changed from 48 hours to one week. One week feels a lot more reasonable.

Wait, members are getting other people they know to randomly come on the board and vote for them?
That's fucking pathetic.

No problems with this at all.

Not quite, but something similar.

This rule is needed. I'm still concerned over how new members are going to see the "eMail Syd for help" thing.
And what if you're not on during those 48 hours?

48 hours is a minimum, and I check my e-mail compulsively. Most of thee accounts probably won't be deleted for closer to 72-96 hours. 48 hours is to give people a sense of urgency.
Also, you don't have to be registered to read the boards. People can read the rules without being logged in.

True. And if you created an account with good intentions and just never got around to posting, and its deleted...well it takes what, two minutes to re-create it?
Good rule, Syd.

Only drawback is people can still vote and then get deleted.

There were 2 accounts created today by the same person. I think you should make people who try to register for the forums get your approval first, so people can't keep signing up with similar names/e-mails.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. The only problem I can see is the sheer amount of traffic the site gets...would it be a huge pain in the ass to sort through and approve/disapprove all the requests? Or do we not get that many per day?

Hawk, we've only got like, 600 total. Looking back over the last little while, we are getting one every couple of days, occasionally two in a day. That's plenty low. I don't think it'd be much of a problem, especially compared to a lot of much bigger forums that do that, some places you'll end up waiting a week on average. Here the most you'd have to wait is a couple days.

I would never join a forum that had that requirement, so I can't in good conscience require it on my own. This is the age of instant gratification, dammit!

Syd. Can't you install a thingy that checks IP or email addresses.
If someone tries to sign up with identical ones, it won't let them and messages you about it?
Seems that would be helpful AND non-intrusive while allowing them instant access usually.

Why not? That requirement never really bugged me, personally. I always asssumed it was to prevent...exactly the sort of thing it seems we're trying to prevent. *shrug*

What if I go away for a weekend, or don't have anything to say? Just because I am gone for two or more days doesnt mean i dont want to be on the site, either.

Yeah, this is only for new accounts. Only accounts with ZERO posts are in danger of being deleted.

I have changed the "You Must Post Or You Get Deleted" period from 48 hours to one week. It seems a lot more fair.

^ Not a bad move, actually. 48 hours seems reasonable too, but I agree that a week is about right. That way people have plenty of time, but its not excessively long for non-posters to clog up the works.

48 hours should be more than enough since anyone joining would likely be doing so to immediately respond to something since you there's no delay in signing up, but there's no harm in extending it to a full week just in case. That is, until the next forum battle...

Why would someone sign up and not be interested in posting almost immediately?

My first post was at least a day after I signed up....a week is better than two days. It allows you to weed out the non-posters as well as prevents you from unintentionally knocking off a legit newcomer.
