Probably a mislabeled soda can, it's like finding a trading card with a blank back where the logo usually is.

Great article Syd, but I disagree with how you said G&W was "damn near unplayable in Melee". One of my good friends who I still play melee with regularly is incredibly sick with him... |
Here's the thing. Is it possible to be good with Game & Watch in Melee? Absolutely. But he's still a bottom tier character, and if you're up against someone who knows how to use Sheik, Fox, Falco, or Marth, you're going to get fucking wrecked. |
Tiers are bullshit, although I shred it with Fox and Marth. |
Fuck all this. I have conquered and destroyed (and won) many tournaments at LAN parties with G&W.
He's decent in Brawl, but eh. His Jump + A parachute attack was replaced by that awful fishbowl bullshit and his Up + B Parachute is a joke. His Down + A (Sewer Cover) was super nerfed and I think his Straight Side + A (The Movie Take Thingy) was a bit nerfed too. Pretty much all of my favorite moves were boiled away, leaving behind a dark, sticky residue that I would question even feeding to my kids if I had any sense of decency.

In the current Brawl tiers, he's considered the fifth best character. Meta Knight is #1.
In the current Melee tiers, G&W, Mewtwo, and Pichu are the bottom three.

Today we are going to be looking at the Wide Screen series, a collection of ten Game & Watch games released between June 1981 and April 1982. |
Mario's Cement Factory was part of the New Wide Screen series and released in 1983.

Yes, Tyop is correct, I reviewed the first Wide Screen series. In all, there were 60 GW games released between 1980 and 1991, 59 if you don't count the special yellow version of Super Mario Bros as a separate game. Most collectors consider there to be 60.

As much as I'd like to see Syd vomit up 25 year old cookies, wouldn't opening them kind of be a travesty to the collection you have there jackfrost? I mean, there are only so many unopened bags of those cookies left in the world (probably less than 20) and if it were me, I'd be guarding them with my life.
My dad still has unopened boxes of C-3POs cereal and Nintento Cereal System in his collection closet and if that house was ever on fire, those would be one of the first things I grab on my way out.
Anyway, great article Syd and thank you for not making it about Watchmen.

Two. Octopus and Popeye. I also have a Nintendo Game Watch (not the same thing) of SMB. The battery in it hasn't been replaced in years though, so it's probably corroded. My Baby Furby died after only two years of leaving dead batteries in it, and this has been like 15 years, maybe more.
A good condition G&W in working order is hard to come by, and sells for a 100+ dollars. If you have a box in good condition, it's more like 300. Rarer G&Ws like Egg and the yellow Super Mario are worth more.

I'm curious Syd, where'd you get the screenshots for the games that aren't Turtle Bridge?

Man, those were stale even in 87.
I remember finding some in the mid 90s and trying them even then, and it was like shards of glass.
I think I might have had some of the later G&W games in the mid 80s, or at least one of my cousins did or something. By the time I was regularly playing Nintendo & SMB, I started disregarding them.

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to ask. Believe it or not, there are actually a lot of LCD emulators out there of various quality. Most of them are single game emulators that use a scan of the handheld and then emulate the game over it. Most of them do not have working alarm features and fudge the clock emulation by reading your computer's internal clock. Some of then look great, others not so much. That's why I was forced to use Gallery 4 for Turtle Bridge; all the emulators of it look like ass. The redrawn Snoopy Tennis sprites are a little rough too, but I really had other option.
The best LCD emulator out there one is called Handheld Quake. It is a multigame emulator that emulates Egg, Chef, Mickey Mouse, Octopus, and some Russian knock-offs. It actually started off primarily as an emulator of the knock-offs. It is great. Sound is perfect, you can set the clock and alarm, the screen scans look great, and the redrawn sprites are perfect.
The Popeye screenshot is an actual screenshot of the game.
