Help me settle this. My friend says that the phrase "thank you much" is grammatically correct and colloquially sound.

I say that people who say "thank you much" should be dragged into soccer stadiums, raped, and shot.

Who's right?

You are. It's "thank you very much" not "thank you much"

And only Apu should say that anyway.

Well considering that much is a quantitative word the phrase Thank you much does not make sense in my eyes. How much?

It makes as much sense as saying Thank you very! Rolling Eyes

I would say it is no worse grammatically than "thank you very much" is. It just sounds weirder.

I'm pretty sure what ever 1st-3rd grader said that to you has yet to learn about proper adverb usage. Much = Much, no matter how its used. Happy Grammar day!

Thank you very much.
Verb Pronoun Adverb Adjective
Grammatically correct.
Colloquially sound.

Thank you much.
Verb Pronoun Adjective

NOT colloquially sound. I am not sure why it isn't colloquially acceptable, but it just sounds retarded and in America you shouldn't say it.

Saying "Thank you much" makes you sound like an idiot. However, saying "Thanks much" is just a cool Tom Nook impression.

thank you much sounds retarded. it doesnt flow well, and it only takes half a second to add the word 'very' to make it have a better ring.

I'm with Douche. Technically "thank you much" is correct, but its not a phrase that gets used often (except, apparently, by people who piss Syd off, and my mother Rolling Eyes ).

In the same way, I suppose "I like it much" would also be technically correct, but you almost never hear it used without adding a "so" onto it.

I say thank you muchly to sound like an idiot.

Whenever I hear 'thank you much', it makes me think of this specific person I hate who used to say that. So I hate that saying.

"Thank you much", sounds like something a half-assed Yoda would say. So yeah, no dice.

I use that sometimes, but never in a serious conversation. Usually when somebody sends me the link to a rom, or mp3 or whatever. But normally, I'll just say "thanks a lot" or "thank you very much", because I know saying "thank you muchly" in real life would make me look like a child, or mentally disabled... or like a mentally disabled child.

Grammatically but not colloquially. It doesn't sound right and you are on your way to a soccer stadium too.

I agree. Just because a sentence is gramatically correct, that doesn't stop you from sounding retarded when you say it.

"Thank you much" sounds bad because it doesn't describe how much "much" is. Much is a measurement of size that needs an article or number before it to describe its size, otherwise it's a noun instead of a modifier. It'd be like saying "He doesn't have ounce of dignity" instead of "an ounce."

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
