I might be blind, but I really don't see gift giving on a personal level as a statement about our country's alliances.

You're absolutely right. It could in fact just be poor diplomacy. But this is a man who promised us he was better, a man who was strongly critical of Bush's foreign policy. From him to fail at foreign relations on such a basic level himself is embarassing. I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt by arguing that it might have been intentional. Hell, I could even sympathize if it were intentional. If it wasn't, well, he's an idiot. Oh well. Ain't our first idiot president, won't be the last.

You still refuse the idea that this could be meaningless.

Perhaps Brown doesn't give a fuck and in that case who cares?

Intentional or not, it's NOT meaningless; it's fucking embarassing. Will it have any longterm effects on US/UK relations? No, and I think Pandajuice summed up the situation perfectly. But it's still awful. And keep in mind, that this incident happened the same week that Hillary Clinton offered Russia a reset button to reset US-Russia relations, which had the Russian word for "reset" spelled incorrectly.

These people are the public faces of our country, and they are making us look cheap and lazy, stupid and corny in the eyes of others.

Fine, it isn't meaningless, it has all the same amount of meaning as my wife getting chocolate ice cream for me when I was in the mood for vanilla. She must have been plotting against me. Please...

As far as the Clinton thing...

This is a terrible idea regardless of spelling.

"Together we press the red button"

On a positive note, they did do something together.

You are trying to make your case relevent but you aren't even comparing correctly. It would be more correct to compare you asking for chocolate ice cream and your wife bringing you back a box of crayons that you have utterly no use for.

The actual idea of it being sort of symbolic and semi-corny I can get past... however not doing the research involved and just simply searching some online babelfish website for a translation in 2 minutes and running with it is embarassing. It is representative of the whole administration's half-assed attempt to get things done in a timely fashion with little to no meaning behind their actions. It's like if the Prime Minister got terminally ill with cancer, I wouldn't put it past either Clinton or Obama to fly over and deliver them a band-aid and take a picture of them shaking the PM's hand just to show their face. Whether you support our current president or not is irrelevant - he was a standard bearer for foreign affairs before being elected and he needs to start proving it.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.

Can you actually FUCKING READ or do you just pretend to? I said LONG AGO that it it may not have been intentional, and you still haven't moved past that. You'd make a great pundit, because you don't actually respond to what people say, you talk about whatever the fuck you want to.

Syd, I do read, and I think I realize your position. I should have just stated my feelings about your position more straight forward without comparisons.

I think you are reading way too much into something that isn't a big deal at all. I think it is outrageous to assume that it was intentional, and if it wasn't intentional it certainly isn't a big mistake worthy of huge embarrassment. I feel no more or less satisfied about how America looks to other countries based on this event.

Now my questions to you are:
1) Do you really think that world leaders and citizens of nations around the world have changed any bit of their opinion of US world relations based on this event?
2) Do you think that Americans are more or less satisfied with Obama due to this event?
3) Do you think that this event will have any additional repercussions, positive or negative?

I do not think I am reading too much into it. I was not even the one who initially suggested it could have been intentional, that was Soldier Hawk; I simply agreed that it was a viable theory. Pandajuice stated that Brown is not popular in his homeland and will probably not win reelection, which gives the theory some definite viability.

1. Possibly. I think world leaders were hoping for a kinder, gentler America, and there was certainly a limitless optimism surrounding President Obama and what he could do. When he toured mainland Europe before the election, he got a hero's welcome. This shows that Obama is not infallible, and I think it does put a definite damper, no matter how small, on expectations for how America will act over the next four years.
2. This a supremely vague question. I am an American, and I am less satisfied with him because of this. I know of at least a few other Americans who are less satisfied with him because of this event. So I believe that Americans are less satisified with him because of this event. I certainly do not think that any sane American s more satisfied with him because of this event. I am under no mandate to state this, as you did not include it as an option, but I believ there are probably plenty of sane people who are equally satisfied with him.
3. No.

Will this incident be an issue in 2012? Absolutely not, everyone will have forgotten about it by then. But it's a topical issue, it pissed me off, and I wanted to discuss it. This is a man who claims to be a giver. He wantsto give everyone free healthcare, he's a big fan of bailouts, and his economic stimulus package is shoveling money and pork to pretty much anyone who asked for it. The guy is basically Matthew Lesko's wet dream. His philosophy is that the government should give about twice as much as it takes. So for him to fail at giving on a such fundamental level, to accept such lovely gifts from Brown, gifts which he reportedly accepted with excitement and eager, and to give him such shoddy ones, is definitely an affront to the person he purports to be and raises questions about his character. These questions will be forgotten within a week, but that doesn't mean they're not worth asking.

I've neither the time nor the inclination to discuss the Obama hate train at length.

If you didn't like Obama, this just confirms everything you suspected about the man, and you'll extrapolate on it until it reflects some vile overarching aspect of life like some bad emo journal metaphor.

If you did like Obama, you'll shrug it off as mildly embarrasing and get on with your life.

Consider couching your judgement on our saint/devil president until about a year, when he has actually had time to run the country into the ground/lead it out of the desert, and when you have a good opportunity to voice your opinion for the one year prep for the two year election cycle.

Yeah, RG does not post much, but the quality of what he says keeps on increasing. I've definitely noticed that since my return to the boards.

most DVD players are regionless now. Those gifts had to be embarrassing after getting the great gifts from brown, but like GP pointed out, it's doubtful he chose the gifts. Not defending the Obama admin, as I get irritated with his celebrity status before he's had a chance to even prove himself, but I don't think this is that big a deal in the grand scheme of foreign relations.

Wow, this turned into a lot of panty bleeding. I'm struggling to decide if this is an elaborate joke you guys are doing or if this is a real "arguement", each side just seems to extreme to their "side".

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/01/obama-gives-queen-elizabe_n_181862.html

A new one. Obama gives the Queen an iPod, the Queen gives Him an autographed photo of her and her husband.

The Queen comes off a little cheap in this exchange, but the photograph is apparently what she gives to all visiting dignitaries. But if Obama had done His homework, He'd have known the Queen already has an iPod. Hell, He could have Googled it, since the British press made a huge deal of it at the time. Secondly, she's the fucking Queen. She's rich as hell. If she wanted a damn iPod, she'd have one... and she does.

This seems to establish a distinct pattern. There seems to be a level of dimwitted American arrogance in Obama's gifts, a complete disrespect for other cultures, that harkens back to the days of Rudyard Kipling.

"Behold, I bring you gifts. These things are ordinary to me, but surely they will seem impressive to the likes of you! Please accept them. Now tell me how great I am!"

I'm surprised she already had an ipod, but I'd be even more surprised if an elderly women, least of all a queen, actually usedan ipod.

Yeah, ridiculous. At least it gave me a good laugh yesterday when I found out - a sad, depressing laugh, but a laugh nonetheless

Yeah, when I found out yesterday that she's had one for a few years now, I wondered exactly that. I doubt she really uses it anyway.

It's weird to just automatically assume that no old people would use an IPOD.

My grandfather is 93 years old, still jogs, drinks Budweiser, smokes a pipe, and owns an IPOD and a Playstation 2 with some actual cool games.

He may just be an exception though, as I really don't see the Queen kicking back and playing Gran Turismo or drinking Bud.

Your paternal grandfather, if he was still alive, might have an iPod. He loved gadgets and he was all about the Atari and the NES.

That still doesn't make it terribly special. I think both presents were kinda lame.

wow, giving somebody an ipod is arrogant, but a signed picture of yourself isn't arrogant?

Like stated, the queen is rich is hell, so it doesn't really matter what she gets, as she could most certainly obtain it herself if she wanted.
