I guess it all boils down to the battling system. It seemed like that it was entirely focused on clicking on the enemy or something like that.

MMORPGs are terrible. They're nothing but pointless grinding and people somehow get addicted to the pointless grinding. I know people who schedule the rest of their fucking lives around their WoW guild's raid schedule. It's fucking sad.
That being said, Runescape isn't noticeably worse than any other MMORPG, and at least it has the decency to be free. |
Amen to that, Syd! MMORPGs are pretty much about people grinding. They pretty much waste your time with all sorts of crap, plus people in those games constantly pull you into their battles. Oh, and let's not even start with the spelling and grammar in those games.

Runescape works off a Rock-Paper-Scissors system, where melee (swords, axs, ect.) beat range (bows and arrows), who beat magic (runes), who in turn beat melee. This normally has very little effect on gameplay until you start doing PVP.
The thing with Runescape is it is basically free WoW, but even more barebones and has even more grinding. Like all MMOs of the WoW style, it caters to certain types of gamers. The game has no appeal to me because I don't feel any accomplishment by grinding for days on end. I don't care if people play the game, but there is no real argument you can make to make me like it because I am not the gamer it caters too. |
You know whats funny? Runescape was created before WoW, so it should be a "Runescape-based" mmo.

But WoW is more well known, thus more people would understand what was meant by WoW style as appose to Runescape style. |
Actually Runescape is the second most reconized MMO in the western audiance. |
second most played, with roughly 5 million players. WoW has roughly 4 million, plus people who know it through commercials, plus factoring in the fact that Runescape is free giving it access to kids who can't afford to pay for WoW due to them not being able to have jobs, the numbers are probably closer in terms of reconnection. It is harder to measure recognition...
I just realized that I looked up the numbers for how many people play certain MMOs and have been trying to measure which would be more recognized. Screw it, the point is still that people who don't like MMOs won't like MMO and the same for liking them, it is a waste of time to try to convince anyone otherwise.

I really play MMO's for the socil aspect of it, like a chatroom with a game attached. And, when you level together it actually can be fun! |
If you play Runescape for the social aspect, you should probably consider suicide.

O.K so Runescape..............
I feel it controls some people and the game becomes everything to them. I don't support all of it but the forums there are O.K.

Yeah, I guess it is starting to be like that.
Anyway, I like retro video games.

I'll give my 2 cents on this argument. Runescape isn't technically a bad game, it's not a good game, but it's not a bad one. I'd much rather play Runescape than games like Joshua : The Battle of Jericho and other shitty games. The graphics are good for a web browser Java game. The controls are good enough so you can at least play the game easily. You can argue that any RPG or MMO has you grind shit to get EXP, Weapons, and other things. The social aspects of the game aren't good at all, but at least there's a social aspect where you can actually talk unlike some games that only let you use commands that are pre-scripted into the game. There's also worse MMO's like Cartoon Network Online : FusionFall (Yes I have played it and it's not very good). You can also argue that every, and I mean EVERY MMO or RPG is fucking repetive at some point in time. The game is good for being made in a Web Browser and Java, but it's not good. So I recommend it if you want to pass time, you love to review video games and you want to review this one, or you like the concept and it looks good to you.

I think the problem with Runescape is that it's just mindless level-grinding. You sit...and grind. But then again, I suppose all MMOs are guilty of this.

If you want to talk to your friends and stuff, you could use a program that's free and easy to use. I would say X-fire or GSC would be the best bet. But to say that you only play runescape to talk to your friends is a pathetic excuse of saying you only play runescape...
