This winter right around New Years, I was on Cape Cod and ventured to the beach. I found a Redtailed Hawk in my path and decided to make a new friend.
So... how close would GPFontaine get to a live wild hawk?
See for yourself.

Taken by the person well behind me, this gives a good idea as to where I was in relation to the hawk:

I also have a video. I'll work on getting that embedded for you guys to all see.
If for some reason you wish to see one of these images in full resolution please let me know and I'll link it.

And just when I was planning to vote for you because of your awesome Zelda campaign banner. </3
Okay seriously, GP, those photos are AMAZING. I would love to get that kind of view of a red tail. Closest I have been though is under a streetlight that one was perched on. (See the poetry thread lol.) He's so beautiful. (Or she...I can't really tell. I think he though.) I wonder why he let you get that close? Just used to people, or wanted to defend his dinner?
My favorite pic is the one of him looking up straight into the camera. Raptors have the most magnificent, steady gazes when they're sizing something up.
God that's pretty. Thanks for posting.

^ Wow. Just wow. Love the way he picks...looks up...picks...looks up. That hawk has some balls to stand that close to a person. I guess they just aren't scared of much (or he's really used to people.)
Thanks again GP.

He is a juvenile hawk. Full sized, but still young.
He just made a kill and was guarding it. In that region during the winter, a hawk of its size doesn't have many natural predators, but it would be very hungry.
I probably outweighed it nearly 60 to 1, but its talons are fucking huge and razor sharp.

Under my feet are about 15-18" wide boards covered in 8" of snow. To the right is a marsh with 8" of snow on top of the most disgusting water you can imagine.
When I was moving to get a better camera angle, I lost the footing with my right foot and had to make a decision: either hold the camera steady, or rebalance myself to avoid falling into the water and freaking out the bird.
None the less, even with my poor footing, I think I did an ok job.
