I did try it. It was called Mike Tyson's Puchout.
I'm not going to waste my time playing a lazy sprite edit. |
Well actually Robot Gumshoe, you should give it a shot because unlike most rom hacks Phred's Cool Punch-Out is a rare quality hack. The sprite editing is actually pretty good (I will admit sometimes the changes to most of the boxers are simple ones, such as sticking a black mask on Great Tiger and calling him Magic Ninja for example, but what's noteable about it is that the sprite edits never glitch out, are never crudely drawn, or revert back to the original Punch-Out!! graphics. Some of the new facial expressions on some of the boxers when you hit them are quite humorous).
But the best change to the game is that Phred actually hacked all the game's text values so all the between-round dialouge is different. Not only that, he actually hacked the game's sound during the between round text. For example, there's a new running gag where Little Mac makes his imitation of the bell ringing, and when he does it the actual sound effect plays (Which late in the game starts to piss Doc off).
So please don't write off Cool Punch-Out as another crappy rom hack, Gumshoe. Phred actually put effort into this one, unlike most of the lazy hackers out there,
There's also another great Punch-Out hack called "All-New Punch Out". While it isn't as humorous as "Cool Punch-Out", "New Punch Out" has much better sprite editing (The only lazy one is where he turns King Hippo blue and calls him "Captain N Hippo"). Take a look at these videos of it and you'll see what I mean:

To quote the guy who posted the videos: New Punch-Out "doesn't incorporate any immature nonsense so common in most ROM hacks . It's just some simple, yet fine-tuned, graphics/text alterations that almost make you feel like you're playing a whole new game, while simultaneously immersed in the original."
So Gumshoe, I know you don't do rom hacks because almost all of them suck, but at least give these two a chance (New Punch-Out espically). These two hacks stand out above all the other crappy ones that plauge the internet for the quailty and effort put into them, so you have to give the guys who made them credit.
