Why does the president need 28 Marine One VH-71 helicopters?

I should rephrase. Obama doesn't even understand what the deal is and McCain agrees. So, who thought that this was a good idea? Ever?

Yeah...one would think that two, MAYBE three at most, would be all that's necessary. Weirdness.

Oh well. I'm sure some huge ass company got a great contract and are putting our tax dollars to good use. Rolling Eyes

They probably greased a few congressmen for that. I remember Clinton got in deep during the primaries for an expensive-ass appropriation to convert a blackhawk for Marine One.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

And, why would the prez need 28 of them?

I would think 3 - 6 at most. I mean he could only fly in one at a time. Having a ready to go spare is always a good idea, and maybe having a few kept at key AFBs around the country for quick lifts, when he arrived in AF1, but then needed to get quickly whisked away, then having one close by might be wise. But 28? No way.

Another possibility is that they may have wanted a bunch in different locations, so you have a helicopter ready in a pinch if he needs to get somewhere. Not saying it's a good reason, but it's an optimist's explanation.

Why does the president even need ONE helicopter? With his approval ratings being what they are, can't he just crowd surf from place to place? At the very least, can't hope and change carry him back and forth? They've carried him this far.

Syd, on a positive note, Obama is wondering the same exact thing.

The only way 28 helicopters are worth that much is if they are transformers which can join together to form some kind of Voltron/Devastor-esque super-robot called "Obamatron."

I'd be willing to offer a few billion for that.

Well he doesn't need as many Armored Cars as Bush did to aid in escaping protesters at his inauguration so that has to be saving us some tax dollars. Obama himself said he thought the Marine One he has now is fine, but he added that he had never owned a helicopter before and he could be mistaken.

Do you know what's in those other SUVs that follow the president around? You only need 2. One in front of the limo, and one in back:

Except that they can't protect the limo from an RPG. Chances are, the president doesn't ride in the limo because the limo is the obvious target no matter how big the caravan. He probably rides in one of the SUVs, which is why there are so many.

Here's what I found on "Cadillac One":

I think it's safe to say, that it could easily withstand a few blasts from any handheld RPG weapon.
