If you like metal, particularly traditional metal like Dio and Maiden, Manowar is pretty awesome. They're also VERY cheesy. At least half their songs mentioned metal at least once, and about a third of their songs are medieval fantasies about killing their enemies with swords. They also constantly reuse old song names in their lyrics. But the band can play and Eric Adams can sing. And they also got Orson Welles to do narration for not one but TWO of their songs.

Dunno if they have a best of, actually. I would say start with their 1988 albim Kings of Metal as it features "Hail and Kill", which is arguably their most popular song.

Best and fairest description of these guys I have ever heard. As goofy as they can be, they're still one of my favorite bands of all time.

I adore Eric Adams, but I never noticed the Hart look alike thing. He really does though.

JRA sent me that link earlier. I don't really believe it. Aside from a picture of Joey with his parents, a picture of Joey from the 70s, and a picture of Joey at a Knights of Malta ceremony that took place in Transylvania, they offer no proof of their allegations.

Manowar is pretty popular in mainland Europe, popular enough that they headlined the final two nights of the three day Magic Circle festival back in July 2008. During the festival, they gave away the motorcycles they rode in the "Return of the Warlord" music video. It is highly dubious that they are broke. Unless Blabbermouth or Brave Words runs the story, I'm not buying it.

I love this shit. This is the first time I've ever listened to them. Extremely cheesy. But I can't help but love it. Whoever plays lead guitar on this song I'm listening to is pretty good.

You're listening to it in exactly the right frame of mind, too. If you come to Manowar expecting intelligent commentary on society, or a bunch of literary references (a la Iron Maiden), you're gonna be disappointed and think they suck and/or are way to juvenile. But if you accept them for what they are and allow the music and imagery to carry you, its one of the best experiences metal can give (imho.) Plus Eric Adams is one of the best singers out there, metal or otherwise. His range and acting ability are fantastic. (For the record, he's better looking than Bret Hart though Wink

).

If I could pick one band to see live, it would be Manowar. With Maiden being a close second, but from what I have seen and heard, the energy and love at a Manowar show is like nothing else.

I've seen Maiden live three times. They were awesome twice. The third time, they played through "A Matter Of Life And Death" in its entirety before the album was out, and that kinda sucked.

I would LOVE to see Manowar live, but they rarely do US shows. But when they do, it's usually in or near NYC, and that's not too far of a trip for me.

Yeah, same situation for me. If I had the money, I'd follow them to Europe in a heartbeat. (And incidentally, your tour shirt article is one of my favorites. I like them all of course, but I find myself coming back to, and re-reading that one, over and over again. You lucky fucking bastard.)

If both Maiden and War were playing nearby, and the cost was the same, I would have a hell of a hard time choosing. I couldn't even use hotness of the front man as a tiebreaker, because they're both quite good looking and have beautiful voices. I think, as much as it would break my heart to miss Maiden, I'd have to go with War. Their songs were just born to be heard live, and I would give almost anything to scream out the lyrics during "Brothers pf Metal." *siiiiigh*

Manowar is the "Hulk Hogan" of metal. Cheesy as hell? Of course. But that's precisely why they're great. When you're in the mood, no band is more FUN to listen to.

And in all seriousness, I think Manowar are better song writers than they get credit for. Lyrical content aside, they write some damn good tunes that rock your fucking balls off.

I totally agree. While a lot of their songs are semi-cheesy, the poetry can be amazing. And the way Adams sells it is second to none. Even during the goofy shit, he's like a great actor stuck with a cheesy script that elevates the material merely by the fact that he's saying it with such belief and intent.

On a related note, the best cheesy line I have every heard from them (or anyone else) from "Hail and Kill": "may your swords be wet/like a young girl in her prime." So bad, a little crass...and yet I find myself singing along with it every time even as I roll my eyes. They really are unique, and awesome.

Haha, I'd heard about that line before, but when I actually heard the song I laughed my ass off. I've found Manowar to be pretty good when they're not fucking around with FOUR MINUTE spoken word pieces (The Warrior Prayer). I downloaded "Kings of Metal" and I wasn't expecting some of the songs to be so fast, "Wheels of Fire" being the main one. While I usually detest balladry, "Heart of Steel" is a really, really good song as well. And of course, I really like "Sting of the Bumblebee." I tried to play it, but after about thirty seconds just said "Fuck it." I can play "YYZ", most of "Anesthesia" and a whole lot of other fast stuff, but "Sting" is just on another level. Overall, I'd give "KoM" about 4/5, but it would be 4.5/5 if it wasn't for 'The Warrior's Prayer" and "The Crown and the Ring" (song's OK, goes on for two long.)

Kind of funny that Adams has a more square jaw than Hart.

The Manowar guys really seem to "live" their own art. They're all pretty diesel, particularly for rock stars. Wouldn't surprise me if they go grocery shopping in full plate armor, dice vegetables with broadswords and do basic home repairs with a warhammer.
