There must be a topic on this somewhere, but if there is I couldn't find it. Apologies if I overlooked an obvious one.
Anyway, I just got myself a new computer (fucking finally), not top of the line, but nothing to sneeze at either. I now finally, FINALLY have the specs to run CoD 4, and also have a convenient Best Buy gift card (early bday present) to utilize. Both as someone in the military and a gamer, I've been eager to try it out since I've heard so many good things.
Here's my only reservation: I'm not a huge fan of FPSes. I don't hate them, but the limited viewpoint they give you drives me crazy (I don't know why, it just does.) Third person shooters a la Mass Effect just work better for me.
Still, I don't want to let something as lame as that keep me from a great game, if it truly is as great as all the reviews say. Anyone care to throw in their two cents on whether its worth buying for a non-FPS fan?

I loved CoD 4. The single player was a lot of fun but the online play is where the game gets really fun.
Being able to create your own custom classes is awesome and the in-game challenges are a great way to unlock weapon attachments and so on. I played CoD4 on the Xbox 360 for a long time. I'm now playing CoD-World At War. It plays exactly like 4 only in WW2 and you can still unlock attachments and stuff just like in 4.

COD4 had an incredible single player story. It was an amazing expirence, and real drew me in. I would be interested to hear your thoughts from a real soldier's point of view after you play through it. ie How much is Hollywoodized bullshit, and how much felt true to life.

Well, in the interest of full disclosure there would be a big asterisk next to my opinion, since I've never seen combat. I'd be happy to give my thoughts for what their worth based on the training and experiences I do have, though.
I have decided to get it, though. Gonna pick it up probably on Friday. Looking forward to it.

Good thinking. IMO CoD4 is about 50x better than CoD World at War.

^ yeah, as much as I love WWII history, I'd be much more interested in playing a game based in the current era, with modern technology and tactics.
Not that there's anything wrong with the other CoDs, they just don't hold as much interest for me, gamingwise.

I'd probably pick 4 over WaW because of some of the modern day items like night vision. Also as much as I like WaW it is still another WW2 game, and we really have enough of those right now.

4 is alright. The single-player's very replayable, and you can get a good amount of enjoyment out of multiplayer.. I still hold United Offensive as the best of the series though, and I've played all of the non-handheld versions.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Not only that but after buying WaW, (even though I got it for $37.00*PS3*) I felt jipped. It felt more like a mod or expansion pack to CoD4 rather than a new game. I actually made money off of it though because I sold it for $40. lol

Alright, so after a full night of playing, I have concluded a few things things:
1. CoD 4 rocks, and was well worth the five bucks I spent on it
2. I suck at CoD 4 (or FPSes in general.)
3. Squad tactics and commands are quite realistic
4. It is really, really, REALLY hard to survive someone throwing a grenade at you.
Great buy, though. As much as I suck at it, this is the first FPS that has really made me want to invest the time to get good.

The story was good, not amazing but very much better than the story in most other FPS games. Multi-player is probably the best mylti player that I have ever played, better than Counter Strike.
