That's amusing, although I have always associated Metroid and the Alien franchise subconsciously anyways. Original or not, I'd rather play Metroid while sitting on a carrot than watch any of those movies, even though Aliens was OK.

I read somewhere that the creator of Metroid was heavily inspired by the Alien movies, so it does make sense.

I always felt Metroid's art style was more of an H.R. Giger thing than an Alien thing.

A cool comparison, but I don't think it has any real meaning.

Well, both Metroid and Alien deals with the same motif - you're all alone somewhere in space, and the only thing that you can count on is your gun.

They were trapped on a ship in OUTER SPACE.
Who's going to come and rescue you in outer space?

This. Funny because I have some HR Giger work in my room, and people always say something along the lines of: "That's pretty cool, but it looks like he's ripping off Alien"

Ridley's original Metroid sprite always reminded me of a Xenomorph.

Probably why I like them both so much. Ripley has always been one of my favorite movie characters. And Samus has a very special place in my heart from when I was a kid. Not that Metroid particularly changed my life or anything, but I will say that fighting my way through that game, and then having "him" take off his helmet to reveal herself...well, as a little seven year old girl, that was way, WAY more inspiring than any gender pep talk I ever got from a parent or teacher.
While I had noticed the plot similarities, I hadn't thought about the atmospheric similarities until now though. Both Metroid and Alien have the creepy, claustrophobic, isolated, last-person-standing kind of feel to them. Very cool.

For those who don't know...
Also, yes, Metroid is INTENTIONALLY Alien-ish. Hell, Ridley is named after Ridley Scott, for Pete's sake.

I am well-aware that Giger did the Alien designs. My point is that the Metroid series seems to take some visual cues from Giger, but it never feels anything at all like Alien.
On the other hand, Contra, which also takes visual cues from Giger, does have a very Alien feel to it.

Agreed. Metroid feels more "inspired by" Alien, whereas Contra is sorta like "let's make an Aliens game, but without paying for the license."

Nay, Contra is more Rambo-like.

Well, I used "Aliens" for a reason; it's more milttary-guys-with-guns than "Alien".

Indeed. It's also the best in the series.
But there's a level of comradery present in all of Alien that is severely lacking in Metroid.

While we're on the subject, here's a challenge for anyone with the resources and talent: Switch the styles of the titles of each installment in both series with that of their counterparts.

To be clear, I knew this, and that's why i thought it was funny people accused him of ripping off his own work.

Like the episode of the Simpsons where Otto is listening to "Living After Midnight" on headphones in a mall music store and complains that every band sounds like Judas Priest?
