I think it was a good pilot too. I like where they can go with it. Fox needs to grow a brain and not cancel it.

The 5 year thing was mentioned in the Pilot too. This time I want to get to see where it goes, since Tru Calling never got that chance.

From the same guy that I quoted in the Heroes thread:

"The Whedonverse now includes human-sized flash drives

Most Joss Whedon productions are filled with fairly non-stop snappy dialogue. "Dollhouse" seems to be a departure in parts, but since this first ep was re-worked by the Fox executives, the bit that rubbed me the wrong way may have been their fault. It was still worth seeing, and, according to critics, some talent from other shows I enjoy will be working on later episodes. However, the whole conceit of the show (wiping memories, implanting new ones) was driven home with a hammer, flattened by a steam-roller, and jumped up-and-down on by a pachyderm via "coincidental" conversation with an ancillary character. I think the only possible tangental reference to "memory" they left out was the card game.

However, I find myself intrigued by the possibilities this show has. One reviewer I heard thought that if they make this a showcase for the lead actress to be a new someone with every episode, we won't have someone consistent to root for. One possibility I thought of is that we might see our main character start to develop a personality/soul/whatever from the bits-n-pieces they're constructing the artificial memories from. It could be a modern-day version of the "avenging ghost story" but with a technological macguffin instead of a supernatural one."

Fox should have let Joss work. He knows we can put stuff together. Fox may have wanted him to dumb it down so they could understand it.

On the whole Whedon/male vs. female thing, I'm gonna throw in my two cents that I was never a huge fan of most of his female characters. Yes, a lot of them "kick ass," but they were also whiny and irritating imho. That's why I never got past the first season of Buffy, and I really, really wanted to like it.

In Wheadonland, Wesley (from Angel) and Malcom (from Firefly) will always be the pinnacle of heroism for me. So I wouldn't go around accusing Joss of being entirely biased towards women. He most definitely is not.

A little more on subject, I haven't had a chance to catch the pilot yet, but heard it was good. Going to track it down sometime this week and check it out if I can.

I've been wondering if there's an over/under on when one of the women's fathers is discovered to be an asshole.

Maybe, but I wouldn't count on it. If anything was their fault it was the two out-of-place action sequences that had nothing to do with the overall plot, i.e. the motorcycle chase and the kick-boxing scene.

As for the dialogue, it wasn't just the snappy one-liners that were missing. All of Whedon's trademark humor that could be found in his previous shows was almost entirely absent in the Dollhouse pilot. The only character with somewhat Whedonesque dialogue was Topher, who seems kind of like a combination of Xander and Andrew.

I'm sure we will see more humor in later episodes though. The nature of the show and the range of stories you can tell with it almost make it certain that there will be plots that are more comical than others. The pilot was more on the serious side. In an episode that deals with a girl being kidnapped by a child-molester, too much humor would have been inappropriate and out of place.

In other news, the Dollhouse pilot did mediocre ratings-wise, although Variety calls it "a credible start". AICN notes that it "improved mightily on its lead-in" Terminator:SCC, but considering that the ratings will almost certainly drop with the second episode, because of some of the curious viewers, who just wanted to check out the pilot, leaving, that may not mean much. I'm hopeful, but I remain skeptical.

It being on Friday nights doesn't help either. I'd like to watch it every week if I can, but when I'm not too tired from the workweek, I'm usually out having fun on Friday nights, like the rest of the country.

First teh shows have to set the tone and rules of this new world before humor can come in and really work. Some of the best humor Whedon had were inside jokes on his shows. Just watch Spike and Angel arguing.

So, it'll come, but we first need to learn this new show's ground rules.
