...I hate when I get to a thread, and everything I wanted to say has already been said.
But yeah, whether or not you accept the Big N's response, they're right. Sometimes holding a game back for the right time is the smart strategy. Releasing a ton of stuff and grabbing all the cash you can is a good way to create a crash (this is what happened in the 80s.)
They only own the rights to 2 of the games on the list anyways, other companies are responsible foe releasing the others. The Rare games just ain't gonna happen, especially Conker. There's also other licensing issues involved sometimes...Goldeneye also has this potential problem, and Konami no longer has the TMNT license, making it impossible to release the games (this is why the NES TMNT on the VC costs more points...they needed to negotiate a special deal with the current license holder, which costs more money).

1) Why was Rare sold off to begin with?
2) So then what's stopping Nintendo from putting Banjo-Kazooie on the VC?

A) Rare was starting to suck and get repetitive. Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Conker's Bad Fur Day, and Star Fox Adventures are all THE SAME EXACT FUCKING GAME. Also, Donkey Kong 64 was a massive failure.
B) They own the game but not the IP. Thus, they can't release the game without Rare's authorization.

I could be wrong, but I always thought Rare was a separate company with an exclusive relationship with Nintendo, and never actually owned by them. They were never Nintendo's to "sell off". Microsoft simply bought them.

Nintendo owned a 49% stake in the company.

Man it seems everybody I talk to lately hates Donkey kong 64. I thought it was good. A little on the hard side, but good.

Personally, I had no problem with DK64. But it didn't do well. I'm not sure how Rare's Star Fox did, but I liked that too. And that got reamed by a lot of people.
Also, I found the letter I sent to Nintendo. According to the save date of the draft on my computer, it was originally sent either on or near February 2nd, 2008:
| Quote: |
You guys REALLY need to ramp up your Virtual Console releases. The VC was originally touted as a key feature of the Wii, but the games have been coming out much too slowly and the ones that HAVE come out lately have been awful. Last week, we got ONE game, a terrible N64 snowboarding game. This week, we got TWO games, Columns 3 and the awful NES port of Operation Wolf. Now, when I first saw Operation Wolf, I was actually a little excited. Sure, it was nowhere near as good as the classic arcade version, but the game had utilized the NES Zapper as one of its control forms. My heart immediately lit up at the thought that perhaps we were finally getting VC games that utilized the Wiimote as a light gun. But no, we didn't. You have to play Operation Wolf with the slow, awkward NES controller-based gameplay. Who thought that would be a good idea? What in the hell were they smoking? You guys took a game that wasn't very good to begin, took away its only draw, and released it as one of two games this week. This, quite frankly, is an atrocity. Given the vast game libraries that the Virtual Console has to draw from, we should be getting at least FIVE new games each week. At the very least, we should be getting more than TWO. There should also be a little bit of market research going on here. In every VC releases, there should be at least one game that is considered a bonafide classic. You can release all the lost gems, minor classics, and terrible games you want, but you need something there to catch people's attention. It's disgraceful the state the VC is in right now. And since you've opened Pandora's Box and started giving us imports, we should probably be getting an import game every week as well. There was a TG16 version of Operation Wolf that was FAR SUPERIOR to the NES version and I think people would have been more excited about that. It was only released in Japan, but the amount of Japanese text in the game was negligible and didn't effect the gameplay at all. Come on guys, step it up. The hype surrounding the Wii is starting to die down. You guys really need to start selling people on the system and prove its more than just a distraction. You need to stop courting the casual fans and start catering to the interests of lifelong Nintendo fanboys.
Also, stop selling yourself as a kiddy company. The whole "You need a different friend code for every fucking game so that you don't get kidnapped by pedophiles" system isn't working. It's annoying. And while you're at it, give us online co-op for the VC titles. And give us a peripheral hard drive. How in the hell am I supposed to fit all the VC titles I want on that pathetically small one that came inside my Wii? The nextgen Wii needs a MUCH bigger hard drive. Not just because it gives us more room for VC titles, but because it gives us room for game patches and cool extras like Guitar Hero song packs. I love you guys, but you never seem to take enough steps forward. When everyone else was using CDs, you insisted on sticking with cartridges, and it lost you market share. When everyone else was using DVDs, you begrudgingly decided to use mini-DVDs, which resulted in some of the last multi-disc games ever made. I mean, get with it all ready. I'm not saying you should go along with whatever Sony and Microsoft are doing, because you shouldn't, but you shouldn't intentionally do the opposite of whatever they're doing just to be different. You guys come up with some of the most innovative gameplay ideas ever and the Wii and the DS are products of this. But you seriously need to rethink your online strategy, because it's awful. Please. I'm begging. |
I guess I did swear a little bit. Oops.

I like Donkey Kong 64, but a good chunk of the game is hard to figure out. I also loved Star Fox 64, but it was way too short.

Star Fox 64 was fantastic, the last great Star Fox.
But it wasn't Rare. Rare did Star Fox Adventures, where Fox and Krystal fight dinosaurs.

Contra and TMNT Arcade are also on Xbox Live. I don't know if they are exclusive or not, but if so, it would make sense why we haven't seen them on VC.

The Contra on XBLA is a straight arcade port. The arcade Contra isn't as good as the NES one.

I agree. I'd much rather have the NES version on the VC. I just wasn't sure if maybe they made some deal that would keep Nintendo from releasing their version.

Yea but it wasn't in the first sentence like me. Also, Star Fox 64 was just about the greatest N64 game ever.
FUCK I just realized I forgot to ask them to put the original Star Fox on the VC, which is probably alot more doable than Goldeneye.

If I were Nintendo, I wouldn't. Two reasons:
1) They're gonna eventually release another Star Fox game, and holding it back until then is a good strategy. They can use it's release to hype the new game.
2) Star Fox 64, which is essentially the same game, has been on the VC forever, and it's one of the most popular downloads (if not THE most popular one). Most people are not gonna go for the inferior version, and let's face it, next to SF64, SF looks like crap.

According to a Starmen.net source, EarthBound won’t be released on the Wii’s Virtual Console anytime soon. The port has been mired in a legal hell as a result of the original game’s numerous references to popular culture. NoA’s lawyers are uncomfortable with the material and want it changed. NoJ -- for whatever reason -- have refused the exclusion of the content.
The crew at Starmen also revealed that the ESRB rating months ago was nothing more than an “internal” blunder. The EB port was problematic from conception. Perhaps as problematic as our desire for a new release.

Because NOA's lawyers are stupid, any lawsuits would be baselsss, and NOJ knows that editing the game would be even worse than not releasing it all?

Legal issues may not be the reason. Personally, I'd be wary of releasing a game filled with early 90's pop culture references in 2009.

| The trick here is Nintendo's Marketing strategy, they don't want to saturate the market with A+ games. Simply because if there are tons of great games, your not going to purchase them all at once. Leaving some garrunteed sales to potentially fall through the cracks. Plus if the consumers know that "these are the games for the month/week" (what have you) they are more likely to try out games they have little recollection/knowledge of. It makes sense to me, but I completely understand your gripe. |

I don't know why people think it's a good idea to write letters to companies with vulgar language. I'm surprised you got a message, JRA, though I'm sure it's a preformatted e-mail because since Syd sent one a year ago, they must be getting a lot of these.

So if they don't care, at least if you use profanity, you can give them some good bulletin board material or something to talk about at the water cooler.
