Okay, let me preface this by saying I am the biggest David Duchovny fan you will ever meet. But while I was browsing in Blockbuster I came across (what I assume is) a new movie of his. I couldn't even bring myself to rent it. Maybe my knee-jerk reaction is too strong, but why, why, why, fucking WHY would ANYONE with ANY kind of name agree to be in a movie with the following premise:
The Secret is a 2007 thriller, directed by Vincent Pérez and a remake of Himitsu, a 1999 Japanese film written by Hiroshi Saitô. It is the story of a mother who dies, and whose spirit immediately returns in the body of her daughter, living her life in preparation for her potential return. The mother living in the daughter's body is still struggling to keep up a physical relationship with the father, Ben through Sam's body. *summary taken from Wikipedia*
I mean seriously. Does anyone else find this as disturbing as I do? Or am I overreacting? Has anyone actually seen this? I mean, maybe its not as bad as it sounds, but...no. Just no.
And another thing: if David Duchovny absolutely, positively HAD to be in a movie where he's screwing someone young enough to be his daughter...WHERE WAS I FOR THAT CASTING CALL?? (...mostly.)

Sorry, but Ed Wood with Johnny Depp, Bill Murray, Vincent D'Onofrio, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Martin Landau is the worst movie premise ever.
It is a movie based on a director who made bad movies.

It is a rare thing for me to get up in the middle of a movie I have never seen before and walk away. I have done it less than ten times in my entire life.
I watched this movie about two thirds of the way through and couldn't take it anymore.
I am convinced that this movie could cause suicide.

Considering it's in the top 250 on IMDb, won 2 oscars and a myriad of other awards, you might just be in the minority there.

Yeah, like what the hell is David Duchovny famous for except X-Files? He can't be real picky about taking roles, man's got bills to pay!

As difficult as it is for some people to believe, being an actor is essentially an occupation. Some are good and have a passion, some have a passion but suck, and some are good but don't have a passion. Same with music and other liberal arts. Some people have talent, but don't really care, so it's essentially a job.
It's the people that attempt to feign passion that piss me off.

Point taken. And I agree on the feigned passion thing. I love it when an actor truly is dedicated to the craft, but I don't mind actors who say things like, "its better than a real job and pays the bills" either. As long as its honest, its fine. And I gotta give Duchovny credit in that respect, in spite of graduating from Yale, he's never faked pretension that I'm aware of.

High ranking on IMDB doesn't really do much for me.
Just because a bunch of people think a movie is artistic doesn't mean I'm going to enjoy it.

You don't enjoy it, no big deal. But claiming it's the worst premise ever and could induce suicide... that's needlessly hyperbolic. Tons of people thoroughly enjoyed it (I never used the word "artistic"), and you're clearly not in the film's demographic. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

As far as IMDB goes, I like citing it because it (as well as other sites with a high volume of user reviews) gives you some insight on how well a movie was recieved. It is entirely opinion based. You can't really say somebody is wrong if they thought the Godfather (or in this case, Ed Wood) sucked. But the numbers do suggest that if you put 100 people in a room to watch it, most will likely give it favorable reviews.
It's also a good tool for picking out movies to watch. I'm guessing that if all of us watch all of IMDB's top 100 and bottom 100, there are going to be more movies each of us like in the top 100. I'm sure there will be movies each person will like in the bottom 100, but they will be fewer and farther between.

I don't like the premise of this movie (The Secret). If he believes his wife/daughter and bangs it with her, then it's incest. And disgusting. If he doesn't believe her, then the "protagonist" that we're supposed to be "rooting for" isn't getting her way. It's either incest or no happy ending for you. (Although I personally find an ending sans incest to be a good one)

My take exactly.
And ThatGuy, he was indeed. He did a (very good) turn in "Twin Peaks" as a cross dressing FBI agent named Dennis (although he preferred "Denise"). Weird show, but pretty good.

If you think it's a terrible premise, then you must think every biopic in existence is a terrible premise. Ed Wood is just a biopic about one of the most famous directors of all time who was so bad, he was great and for me, it made for a fantastically entertaining movie, and is one of my favorites.
I think you are definitely in the minority when it comes to disliking Ed Wood.

A biography of someone famous or infamous is interesting.
A movie about a shitty movie maker??? This is a terrible idea.
We shall see how people vote.

Damn GP, I have never seen you so bent out of shape over something so meaningless. Don't take it out on us, go picket Tim Burton's next movie and ask why he decided on such a terrible premise for a movie, hmm?

That's just it. He's so bad that he's infamous, I saw that flick a really, really long time ago, though, and I can't even remember if I liked it.
I remember being weirded out, but I enjoy weird movies now.

Ed Wood is both famous and infamous. He is widely regarded as the worst film director of all time, even worse than Uwe Boll which makes him just as well known as Coppola or Kubrick, so I don't really get how you can call that a terrible premise when I'm sure you'd say that a biography based on Kubrick would be a good premise. What's the difference?
