So, last december, my firm fired a handful of the poor performers, but on Friday, they actually "downsized" a sizeable amount of people.
What pisses me off the most about it, is that the two fellow paralegals that they fired were the attractive female ones. So, now I have nothing good to look at during the day. The only attractive female lawyer is on a different floor than me, plus she already turned me down when I first started working there. Thankfully, the hispanic/arabic paralegal who was fired stopped by my office today to say goodbye and I gave her my number, so hopefully I'll at least see her again.
What I really don't understand about it, is that according to the profit-sharing program, the firm is making money hand-over-fist, and they had the Christmas party at the plush Metropolitan Club in the Sears Tower last December. If they have to layoff people, why are they wasting money on an expensive Christmas party? I understand the business end of it - most of the other paralegals, including myself, have been complaining about the lack of work the past nine months, so, technically, they had too many workers for the amount of work they had available. Yet, in my law group (Labor & Employment), they have been continuing to hire new attorneys. So, I don't understand the logic of a lot of these things. I don't know, maybe I just have "survivor's guilt."
Thankfully, at least my job is secure. I've been told that I'll be taking on some of the former paralegals' responsibilities, and I'm involved in several ongoing projects. So, I'm safe for now at least.
Well, I've finally witnessed the recession first hand now.

I witnessed it first hand when my boss missed payroll routinely for about a month.

Well sometimes for the sake of the party people have to get fired, it's how christmas works. But seriously I see other companies doing that too, having lavish events and then laying off a bunch of people. Doesn't make much sense to me.

It would have been even better if you would have turned it into a negative campaign ad.

Heh. Now, I couldn't have possibly disagreed with him on every issue, could I?
For example, we're both White Sox fans.

Back to the original topic.
I think that companies with lots of money are using the declining economy as an excuse to remove workers that they dislike or disapprove of. In a normal economy you can't just fire someone, you have to have really good reasons and they have to be documented well. Otherwise the person can sue you and they will most likely win. In a bad economy, you can just say that you can't afford them any longer.
In any case, I cross my fingers every day that I am not going to be on the chopping block when the time comes. I think I bring a lot to my work environment, but I am the new guy (only 7 months at the job).
I have friends who have lost jobs and I haven't heard of anyone finding new work.
Fortunately for me, no one I work with has been let go... yet.
To be honest though, I don't really work with anyone attractive, so eye candy loss isn't an available thing for me to worry about.

GP has it right. The company may be doing fine and is just using the economy as an excuse to layoff people and keep more money for the top execs.

Layoffs are not a good way to get rid of fucktards. You have to pay their unemployment, give them at least neutral reviews, and if the job re-opens, they get the first opportunity to fill it.

It is cheaper than keeping someone you dislike.

Well, I'm glad your job is safe at least.
The office party thing is weird, but I'm not sure the cost of even a fairly lavish one would make up for several people's salaries. (Now, I don't know what it cost vs. what your colleagues made of course so I could be dead wrong.) Either way, it does send the wrong message though. Kind of like this:

It seems to be that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. But, now the rich have figured out that the Gov't will pay for their riches and fuck us over even harder.
No one at the top cares about the bottom line anymore. Its all about their $$$.

I think I'm lucky in the layoff respects because I work for a *aherm* certain evil movie rental chain as a manager, and at the very least, while not recession-proof, movie rental businesses are usually recession-resistant.
Or, no matter how poor people get, they're still going to want to watch garbage like Disaster Movie.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

GP is right to an extent, but a good number of the 13 people (almost 10% of our workforce) who were fired from my firm on Friday were good workers, it's just that we didn't have any work for them anymore, and they had the lowest seniority. I'd say around half of the terminations were poor performers/troublemakers, and the rest were the low seniority folks.
It's funny, my group (Labor & Employment) didn't have any terminations, as we didn't lose that much money - the poor economy actually created more jobs for us; however, the bad financial picture is making it hard for our clients to pay our invoices. A senior partner even said in a meeting we had today that we had a check bounce on us this morning, which was apparently the first time one of our clients did that to us (We are a young firm, only about 15 years old).
Even funnier, is that the senior partners are now really hoping that Obama passes some new labor laws like the Employee Free Choice Act, since it will create a shitload of new work for us, helping companies comply with the new legislation. I'd be happy, except that law takes the democracy out of choosing union membership.

Nearly 5 million are getting unemployment benefits
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of laid-off workers receiving unemployment benefits has jumped to an all-time high near 5 million while new jobless claims remain well above 600,000. Both figures were worse than expected and new projections from the Federal Reserve show unemployment rising for the rest of this year.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of people receiving regular unemployment benefits rose 170,000 to 4.99 million for the week ending Feb. 7, marking the fourth straight week those receiving benefits have been at a record level on data going back to 1967. |
