Why is it that many of the European countries that constantly tout themselves as being oh-so-socially progressive are complete facists when it comes to what's acceptable in a video game? Aren't freedom of speech and freedom of expression supposed to be the hallmarks of any half-decent society?

It's pretty silly, Cannibal Corpse can't play Butchered at Birth or Post Mortal Ejaculation in Germany due to the censorship laws, but they're totally allowed to play Dismembered and Molested or Puncture Wound Massacre.Rolling Eyes

I'm sure the rules for video games are just as lame. Any games in particular you were thinking of? Confused

Contra comes to mind. Instead of humans, it's robots running around. And they call it "Probotector" over there. Same thing with TMNT. They don't like the word "ninja".

I'm not sure about the answer to your question.

What it makes me wonder though... how does the physique and health of the nations compare physically. Does additional expression equal fat & lazy?

Funny thing is the advertisements for stuff especially in England are more risque than stuff here. I remember an article about this in an old issue of EGM. They showed two game covers for a tennis game. The American one just showed some people playing tennis. The British one had a shot of a girl's ass in tennis clothes where you could see her underwear.

I can only speak for Germany, but as far as that is concerned, the explanation is relatively simple. It can be put into three words: Second World War.

The most obvious result of WWII in Germany when it comes to censorship is of course the legal ban on symbols of unconstitutional organizations, like the swastika. This has led to a number of games being banned for their references to National Socialism, most famously Wolfenstein 3D.

A less obvious result is the impact that WWII had on German society. Ever since the fall of the Third Reich German society has been decidedly pacifistic. With the memories of the catastrophic past still vivid, nonviolence and the opposition to hatred have become a cornerstone of German education. This, combined with the historically strong German tendency towards over-regulation and bureaucracy, has created a way too powerful institution called BPjM which monitors all types of media, including video games.

The fact that this is indeed a result of Germany's troubled past becomes especially apparent if you look at what is generally not censored: Sexual content and indecent language. When it comes to those German regulations are often more lenient than those in the U.S. There is no bleeping on TV for example and you can regularly see content on public television that would only be shown edited or on premium channels in the U.S. Only when it comes to depictions of violence are German laws significantly stricter, even compared to other European nations.

As to why censoring of violence is disproportionately high with video games as compared to, say, movies, I can only guess. I assume that the relative newness of the medium and the general public's unfamiliarity with it help to stoke fears and make censorship seem more desirable. The sensationalist reporting in the German press that has linked several killing sprees to games like Counter Strike certainly didn't help either.

Not necessarily; in recent years, Japan has had censored certain moments of extreme violence. Take a look at these videos to see what I mean:

If this were true in Europe, we'd still be living in what we'd call West England.

Austrailia has some tough video game censorship laws.

In fact, there was a scare there recently, that buying MMOs could be illegal there because they don't have ratings.

Also, many companies have had to cater to AUS's stricter policies. Fallout 3 had to remove the word "Morphine" from the game in order to get it released in AUS.

Well it seems in most places outside of the us, sexuality is deemed less offensive than violence. While in the states it's the opposite.

That's beacause our country was founded by religious zealots so uptight, the British kicked them out.

Europeans and Australians are just usually bitter about games because they have to wait 3-6 months longer than the US or Japan for them to be released. They get to read about how everyone is having fun with Smash Bros or GTAIV while they sit around waiting for them to come out.

I don't understand why here in Cananda the ESRB gives the same rateings to games as in the US. When all other forms of media is allmost allways rated a level lower then in the US. Just look up the rateing of any movie on IMDB

http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/resources/ratings_classification_systems/film_classification/ont_film_classification.cfm

Mild Audible profanity like "shit" can be on tv at any time of the day.

Written profanity "fuck the pigs" in graffiti is fine on the 9pm news

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean somebody else shouldn't be able to buy it. Besides, you can get that kind of stuff on Newgrounds.
