Hah, surprised I didn't already see a thread for this/I am sure everyone has already heard about this, but...
Apparently while rippin' some bongs at a buddy's, he let someone take a pic of him (who sold it to a British tabloid for a cool buck).
Anyways, I think the press is making way too big of a deal out of this, the man won fucking 8 Gold medals and is an American hero for Christ's sake, leave him alone. Thoughts?

Well, he is a role model. Someone kids can look up to (bong hits aside). Today, the words role model and hero, when used loosely are often considered synonymous. I don't think he was trying to compare a swimmer to people who risk their lives for our freedom.

Ouch.....I dunno, he destroyed alot of other countries in swimming. Perhaps he is not an American Hero, but it is impossible for you to say he is not an unbelievably accomplished athlete.

I never tried to say that he wasn't. However, professional athelete != hero.

Who cares. He's probably using it for something legitimate like keeping his appetite up or chronic muscle soreness or back pain or depression or ad/hd or MS or cerebral palsy or muscle spasms or cancer or ptsd. Who gives a flying fuck. Let him do what he wants.

I don't think he is gonna lose any real major endorsements or sponsorships as a result. It would be dumb to drop him because of this.

Yeah, and all his friends who were with him have cancer as well. It's one thing to say who cares and that smoking pot isn't a big deal, but don't pretend there was a legitimate reason for it.

Tell this to the multitude of people that hold professional athletes in that regard. While you're at it, why don't you define hero for us?

A hero is either a cheerleader or someone who helped save a cheerleader.

If he wants to smoke bud, he's gotta keep it on the down-low like the rest of us.
That said, it's no biggie in my opinion. We can all live once in a while, can't we?

I usually live when I'm not high. If I am, I'm in more of a paranoid, anxiety-filled vegetative state. I can't touch that shit like I used to.

Yes, so he, like Kurt Angle, can be an Olympic hero. That doesn't make him an American hero. (No, an American hero is not a hero who happens to be American)

Then what is an "American" hero?
Why don't you divulge your thoughts on this instead of just criticizing everyone else's thoughts? That's all you done in this thread is tell x person that what they think is wrong, and haven't even bothered to give a decent explanation as to why.

*Shrug* personally, I don't think calling him a hero is bad. Now, if someone tried to turn him into something on par with, say, a MoH or Purple Heart winner, I'd call them full of shit. But Phelps is someone who helped bring a lot of the country together, and who almost all Americans cheered for. He made us feel good, and accomplished a pretty superhuman feat in the name of our country. I'd say that qualifies as an American hero. My two cents, for what its worth.
And as for the bong thing...I could give a rats ass that he wants to get high. I am flabbergasted he was dumb enough to let someone take photos. (Although I suppose when you're high you aren't in the most logical frame of mind.)

Who the fuck cares.
I didn't read the other posts because that is all I have to say.
So he, like probably 80% of people, has smoked weed at one point. Who cares, it didn't enhance his performance, he likes to party.
They should be reporting on things that actually matter.

Uh-huh. I mean, the guy is a 20-something millionaire. What do they expect him to do with his money, invest it? Especially nowadays, I'd say bongs are a far better use of his fortune. At least that's something that will never depreciate in value.
