Me, I say Akira has at least one star too many. While I give it props for everything about it being hand-drawn, the storyline is fucking ridiculous.

Any of you guys got some such movies to post here? Titanic excluded, as it's only a three-star film.

My local TV schedule's. It seems mostly accurate to me and I thought it was generally agreed upon.

There's a storyline?

I read the manga and still can't figure out what the heck is going on there.

I don't have a guide near me to check how many stars certain movies have, but I'll just say Peter Jackson's King Kong. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong whatever.

Go by Ebert or Maltin, we don't all have access to the ratings of your local TV station...

Eberts can be found online.

Personally, I prefer Metacritic for ratings.

They go from 0 - 100, which is a lot better than a 4 star system.

Based on a 4 star, every star would be a score of 25. 4 stars = 100, 3 = 75, 2 =50, 1 =25.

And, as we all remember from our school days, there is a big difference between the grades of "C" (75, 3-Star) and "A+". (100, 4-Star)

Comcast uses some sort of conglomeration of critics' reviews to put stars in the guide, I'm sure that's what he's talking about.

I'm pretty sure it only got 2 stars.

Blades of Steel, however, got 4 stars somehow, according to Comcast, and it barely deserves one star. I also think Taxi Driver is overrated.

The English Patient. Not sure if it has 4 stars (probably) but it won 9 Oscars including best picture. Horrible movie IMO.

Haha, I've never seen it, but I will quote the great Hank Hill in a King of the Hill book I have.
"You don't have to be English to watch this movie. But you sure as hell have to be patient."

"There Will Be Blood" had its cock sucked all over the place when it came out. Personally, I hated it. I found it boring, confusing and pointless.

If anyone here liked it though, I'd love to hear your take. I genuinely don't get why all the critics seemed to love it so much (aside from a great performance by Daniel Day Lewis of course).

Atonement.

As for There Will Be Blood...The baptism scene is one of my favorite movie moments EVER. That alone gives it 4 stars for me.

Forrest Gump. Here's a little diatribe I made a while back

Quote:
Man Forrest Gump was a terrible movie. I've seen a lot of awful movies in my day, and most aren't noteworthy, but the fact that this movie is so beloved and critically acclaimed is beyond me. Let me give you the plot summary. I bet I can do it in one sentence: Hey baby boomers, remember all that stuff that happened when you were growing up here in America? Well, here it is with a retarded guy edited in all that familiar footage and inventing everything you are fond of. Ok, so it took two sentences, but you get the point. What is even more disturbing than the ridiculous plot, is the message the film gives us.

If your an idiot who drifts along and questions nothing, everything will fall into place, and you will be a great success. If you are any sort of free thinker (Jenny, Lt. Dan) you will be a domestically abused stripper/folk singer addicted to drugs, who will eventually die of AIDS. Also, you will lose your legs and harass prostitutes. Borrowing from Dave Chappelle, how come the only person dumber than Forrest Gump in the movie is his black friend Bubba? How did Forrest Gump even graduate high school? Join the military? God this movie sucks. And to put the proverbial cherry on top of the shit-cake, Zameckis treats the audience like they have an IQ of 75 as well. See the feather floating around aimlessly? That symbolizes the life of Forrest, because he drifts through life like a feather. Wow, thanks for that nifty visual. I wouldn't have been able to figure that out without the visual aid. Life us like a box of chocolates? Clever analogy that effectively summarizes the complexities of life.

This movie is a god-awful poo poo nostalgia flick, pandering to baby boomers. Remember this song? Remember when that happened? Well guess what, A retard did more with his life on pure luck than you ever could working your ass off. Remember those counter-coulture groups like the black panthers and anti-war hippies? Well they all spit on soldiers and beat women and eventually all died of drug overdoses and AIDS. Congratulations for taking a stand on nothing, you managed to make it long enough to relive it all again.

I have not seen the Academy Awards since this movie kicked the crap out of Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption, two superior films in every aspect possible of film making. What a Joke.

Also on Akira: Of course it's just opinions, but it was definately a monumental accomplishment in many facets.

The animation was completely hand drawn, and superior to anything I've yet seen. Every movement was accurate. The environments were vast, imaginative and wonderfully rendered. They never copped out on accurately laying shadows or lighting, and weren't afraid to do interesting perspectives that are incredibly difficult to animate.

The music was outstanding. It was created by a group called Geinoh Yamashirogumi which was a compilation of people from all walks of life. Musicians, scientists, you name it. They also created a lot of their own synthisizers, fusing traditonal japanese folk with modern electronic sounds and instruments.

The story, when I originally saw it was tough to follow, because well, I was very young, and the VHS dubbing worried more about syncing the voices with the animation than accurately retelling the story. I discovered this when I got my hands on a subtitled version a couple years later. The latest release I have on DVD redid the voice acting and dramatically improved the accuracy of the original japanese script. The story is fairly easy to follow on this release, and I still find that leaving some elements not so much unanswered but not cut and dry to be very interesting and encourages my desire to watch it again. The story is only one element of the whole package of what I consider to be one of the best animated films ever. Hell, it's one of my favorite films of any kind.

It is a great portrayal of greed and darker aspects of faith and religion. Not to forget its authentic world, fascinating cinematography (just look at those lovely long takes) and a brilliantly gritty musical score. PTA achieved great quality in all aspects. What I would like to add to what critics said: Paul Dano's performance as great as Daniel's. It is criminally underrated.

I never liked Raging Bull. I love Scorsese almost without fault, but I found Raging Bull to be slow, directionless, and uninteresting. Obviously De Niro and Pesci were awesome, but the movie itself just never grabbed me and I found it very overrated.

That's how I feel about most Scorsese films Panda. I never saw them growing up, so revisiting them now, after hearing so much praise about them, I continue to be disappointed.

And wow Burt, I never thought of Forrest Gump that way, you have a point. Then again, I've only seen the movie once, when it first came out, so I never really got to really analyze it.

DD Lewis's performance was the problem for me with that movie. He played him TOO GOOD. I couldn't stand the main character in that flick. I hated his guts. I spent the whole movie hoping for some slow and painful death for him.

V For Vendetta.

A shameful attempt to capitalize on paranoiacs' irrational fear of the Patriot Act.

I liked this movie a lot. Then again, I am not exactly a fan of the patriot act, so that might have something to do with it.
